Ben had discovered something about himself already, and the session hadn't even begun. He had always known he hated doctors, but now he realized just what the reason for what was, and it surprised him. He hated doctors because people needed them. Illness was inevitable, doctors were unavoidable. Ben had spent his life snubbing doctors, and now here he was, awaiting his turn to be called into someone else's office, where he would have to sit in the opposite chair: the one for the patient.
He'd given a fake name.
He'd given a fake name because he needed what was about to happen to remain as secret as possible. It had to stay off the record. He had a reputation to protect. A reputation of blasting the psychiatric community at every opportunity, especially in print. It was very likely this doctor he was about to see would recognize him immediately. Might even refuse treatment. That was very possible. Ben would be relieved if he did. He still could not think of this as something he was doing for himself. He was doing it for Juliet. That's what he told himself, repeatedly, interrupted only when the false name he had given was called.
"Dean Moriarty?"
