Life was funny. Or maybe out to get her. The entire world was going crazy, and she had followed right along with it.

Bellatrix Black. Of all the people she could have fallen for, why did it have to be her?

Kate slid into a recently vacated seat. The diner was busy, but she didn’t mind. It made it easier to blend into the crowd, people overlooking her more often than not. Old habits liked to stick around, and she’d always been good at not drawing unwanted attention to herself. If she hadn’t been, she’d probably be sitting in a cell somewhere.

Yanking an unassuming folder out of her bag, she opened it, sorting through the contents until she found the page she wanted. Reaching for her coffee, she settled back in her seat. She had some reading to do.

Elphaba was having a clumsy day apparently. First she couldn't get the key in the door at work, then she'd missed the plant pot when she was watering it spilling it all over the floor, she'd flung her pen on the floor more times than she could be bothered to count this morning alone and then she'd spilled her pasta salad all over the floor as she tried to get it out of the fridge.

And now, she had tripped over what must have been a phantom leprechaun or something in the cafe she had run down to for lunch. She managed to catch herself on the table before her coffee went everywhere but she apologised to the woman reading her book as she examined the heel of her shoe. "I'm so sorry, it's just been one mishap after another today," she sighed. Who knew sleeping with Lúthien could be so...distracting... she mused to herself.

Kate had fairly steady nerves, and she only looked slightly surprised when the unfamiliar woman landed on her table. Sliding the file back into its folder and out of sight.

"Hey. It happens to the best of us." She flashed her a slightly amused smile. "Kate. Nice to meet you."

"Elphaba Thropp," she reached out her hand to shake Kate's as was second nature to her now. "I really am sorry, I just feel so clumsy today," she sighed heavily. "Would you mind if I sat down for a minute?" she asked. "Try and get my limbs co-ordinated," she added glibly.

Still grinning, she gestured to the seat across from her. "All yours."

The woman seemed nice enough, and the place was crowded. No need to send her out to trip over someone else. Besides, this was (sadly) the most thrilling thing that had happened to her all day.

Today, Remy was running errands. The barhopping had lost its appeal, not to mention its effectiveness. Besides, she was getting bored.

The downside? It meant she’d need actual food in the house. And, okay, maybe she could use a few more things. Sparsely furnished was an understatement. Her apartment was barely livable.

All day, she could be found in any number of stores, buying anything from small necessities to a new television. If you’re lucky, you might even catch her taking a break in the park.

Vala was looking at furniture for a client. She'd been hired to decorate this poor man's house and boy did the man need a woman's touch in his life. A divorcee with a teenage boy and girl who lived with him on the weekend, the man had been moved into a new house and even though he'd been living there for months it still looked like a Dull-osaurus had vomited all over the place. Good god it needed colour and lucky for Vala had the the cash to splash out a bit.

As she eyed up a dining room set, she caught a woman looking intently at what she assumed was some sort of side-table. It was alright, but not exactly an exciting design and it didn't seem to 'fit' the woman looking at it. Vala had a knack for that, although it did leave her a little distracted building a full design picture in her head while staring at the person she was designing for.

The table was functional. And cheap. Even if she had the money to spend, it seemed like a waste. Life was short and all that. Besides, who else was going to see it?

She wrinkled her nose, studying it a while longer. Screw it. She was buying the damn table.

Vala noticed the moment the other woman decided to buy it and couldn't help herself from intervening. "Oh ssweetie, please don't buy that," she told her gently. "It's just...awful," she held her hand out at the thing. It wasn't even a nice colour of wood for crying out loud.

Remy hadn't noticed the other woman's attention until just then, and she arched an eyebrow with a look that very clearly said, 'Excuse me?' Because, really, furniture shopping was not her thing, and who the hell was she to tell her what she could and couldn't buy?

She wasn't always like this; she was just in a supremely bad mood lately.

Poppet

Since they landed in California, Poppet and Widget had been going their separate ways more and more often. She knew where he was, of course. She always knew. Even when he didn’t tell her where he was going. But most of the time, it didn’t seem to matter. They would find each other again eventually.

In the meantime, she had hours to fill.

Her first stop was the library, but she didn’t stay for long. It was much too quiet for her liking. And instead of the regulars who had grown used to her presence, she was faced with those who only thought of her as an annoyance.

Instead, she headed for the park, starting at the swings, then moving along the trails, occasionally wandering off the path and taking unexpected detours. She continued that way until she found a quiet patch of grass, spinning in circles, arms out for balance. She giggled, landing hard on her bum.

It didn’t matter if she had an audience. They could think what they liked of her. Laying down, she closed her eyes, wishing she could see the stars.

Thea had been spending a lot of time either working with Ollie in the office, which she'd found she wasn't that bad at, or studying for the GED lately, so getting out of TenTen's complex was probably for the best. This afternoon, she'd made her way to the park, a bag with some needlepoint in tow so she could clear her mind a little. She'd gotten into the craft side of things at the ranch and found it relaxing now and then. She'd been pulling in a stitch when somebody fell over in front of her.

Jumping to her feet, she started over to see if she was okay, just as Poppet started laughing. "Okay, I guess you ARE all right." she said, since she had to say SOMETHING since heading over there. "That's good."

"Of course, I am!" She seemed confused that it would even be in question. "Why wouldn't I be?"

Never mind that, though, it wasn't the first time something had eluded her understanding. People were complicated creatures.

"Thank you for worrying, though. You can call me Poppet. Most people do."

"I'm Thea." Thea grinned and gave her a little wave. "I just figured, you know, the whole crashing to the ground bit. Usually the only time that happens in a good way is in chick flicks. Nice to meet you!"

Little pleasures (what she considered pleasures, at least) delighted Poppet. And spinning in circles until you fell over was possibly one of the most wonderful things in the world. But maybe that wasn't normal, either.

"It doesn't hurt," she answered brightly, followed shortly by another giggle. "Not much, at least."

"That's probably a good thing." Thea laughed herself. "You just don't see this sort of thing every day, you know? But it COULD be fun. I don't think I've tried that since I was like...sevenish. But might be worth it."

"I do a lot of things people don't see every day," she answered with a shrug, "I like being different."

She thought everyone should try being a little different. Though, she supposed that would defeat the purpose.

"It's possibly the most wonderful feeling in the world, if you don't mind the funny looks."

"I've probably gotten a lot funnier looks than that." Thea answered her, grinning. "Well then, I should give it a shot, huh?" That said, she flung her arms out, and started spinning a little herself, laughing after a few turns when she started to get dizzy.

"Okay. This is pretty awesome."

"Isn't it?"

Poppet was used to the funny looks, but it was nice to find someone else who didn't seem to mind them.

"People shouldn't be so unkind. What use is there in living, if we never enjoy it?"

"You know, not a lot." Thea flopped on the ground, giggling as she did. "That was kind of great." she confided, thinking that the only recent time that compared to that was the game of The Floor Is Lava with Ollie, Judy and Roy. To be doing it while completely sober though was something else, and it felt great.

"I need to try doing this more often."

"I think everyone should." People were still beyond her realm of understanding, especially the uptight ones. And compared to her parents, that was nearly everyone.

"Have you always lived here?"

"I got out here around...last Fall sometime." Thea grinned, propping herself up on her elbows. "I was in Seattle before that. which was..." Well, her parents, if she could still call them that after all they had DONE and kept from her, had made it hard to like it there, the stuff with Livvie even harder.

"...A little bit to adjust to, but it's been good." And it had, really. She was off the drugs now, hadn't really been drinking, Ollie...she was gonna be on at least a few episodes of the Roy and Zevran show... "I found out I have a big brother here and that's been kind of awesome. So how about you? How long have you been around here?"

"Brothers are wonderful." Poppet found a lot of things wonderful. Widge was kind of a big brother. They were the same age, but he was the more serious of the two.

"Nearly three months now!" If she sounded overly excited about that, she was. Everything was still new and exciting. "I've never been anywhere this long before. We moved a lot."
