Alice had a bad feeling. It was the sort of bad feeling that had her slide her favorite large butcher knife into the leg of her pants and lock her flat up.
Some miles away, a man in a black coat, in a black, unassuming sedan, was tailing a certain not-red-head. He had a proposition for her.
Aveline had noticed the sedan. It made her curious, but it also made her wary. Black sedans never meant anything good. Usually they meant cloak-and-dagger or violence. Sometimes both.
There was definitely cloak and dagger, with the hint of potential violence. The car moved alongside her, and the window slid down. The man inside spoke with a gravelly voice, "Aveline."
Down the street, Alice rounded the corner, and slowed her movement. Curiouser and curiouser, she thought. Casually (only not really), she hid behind a tree. A very thin tree.
Aveline stiffened, the hair on the back of her neck standing up. "What's it to you?"
He held out a manila envelope, "I have a proposition for you. It pertains to certain actions you were involved with, several years ago. Your background possesses certain qualities I'm looking for."
Alice squinted, and snuck around to hide next to a bus stop.
Aveline's eyes narrowed as she glanced from the man to the envelope. Had to be that thing with Shepard. "Who are you working for?" she asked.
"There's only one person above me. We work for the greater good," He flashed a smile with perfect teeth, his eyes shaded by a black cowboy hat. "Just look it over."
By this time, Alice was sneaking up behind the car.
"...I'll take it. I make no promises, and taking it does not mean I'll work for you." Aveline took the envelope warily. His teeth were too damn good. He'd had work done, she was sure of it.
More work than most people could afford. He smiled at her again, "Of course. I'll be in contact, Aveline." The window rolled up, and the car drove away, revealing Alice kneeling there with a large knife, as though she were about to slash a tire or cut a bitch. She hid it behind her back and smiled cautiously at Aveline.
Aveline tucked the envelope under her arm. She watched the man drive off. Under normal circumstances, she'd memorize the license plate. But these were not normal cirumstances and the man probably had half a dozen plates, at least. She raised an eyebrwo when she spotted Alice. "Hello, again," she said. She wondered how much of the conversation the girl had heard.
"Are you okay?" She sneakily slipped her knife into her pants again and wrung her hands together, before stepping over and inspecting Aveline for potential damage. That man had a bad air about him, one she couldn't place and it left her uneasy. She filed him under 'bad man' and 'stabbing in balls'.
Repeatedly. Alice just wanted to make that clear.
"I'm fine. Just...a strange, unexpected visitor." And some things to look over. Even though Aveline wasn't sure she wanted to know what was in the envelope.
Blackmail might be the word to use. Opportunity, the man in black would call it. Alice poked at the envelope, then poked at Aveline, "You shouldn't talk to strangers, its dangerous."
Aveline smiled slightly. "I'm a detective, Alice. I talk to strangers every day. It's part of the job." Even if men in black vehicles usually weren't part of the job.
"Well, he was talking to you." She held Aveline's hand tightly. To comfort the other woman, "That means its bad. I really would like to stab him in the balls." Its a perfectly valid place to stab a man!
Aveline wasn't sure what to think of the handholding, but at least it meant the girls trusted her. That was good, at least. "I don't think he's exactly a white hat, true. And it's probably best that you don't tell anyone else about the...stabbing."
Pale eyes regarded the red-head with an unusual amount of focus and thought. Alice nodded her head and let go of Aveline's hand. Then she volunteered, "I was with people with guns the other night. They were rescuing an old car."
People with guns was not a good thing. "Rescuing an old car? What did they look like? What did the car look like?" She paused. "And why were you there?"
"There was this silly man. He was clearly out of sorts, he had a DRIVER of all things. He was looking for his car, but they were blocking my view of the drug deal! So I politely asked them to move. Then this other woman showed up."
Alice held her hands out in front her her, "Her knockers were this big, I swear. She was from home, at least. They both were! But her knockers. Out to here. She was really pretty and I'll bet she tastes like spices."
"...what made you think she'd...taste like spices?" And why was that description oddly familiar? Avelien wasn't sure she wanted to know. "Did the car belong to any of them?"
"She was Indian." As if that explained that, " I think it belonged to Frodo. What an odd name." She wasn't sure if she'd heard the woman's name, "Something with an I..." Alice shrugged, not explaining the random though, "There was money involved, and we went to the noisy place."
Interesting. "What was the noisy place like?" This was...very strange, but most of Alice's...adventures were a little strange.
"Grinding metal and music. Sometimes smaching glass. I've seen cars go in but they never come out." Alice threaded her hands behind her back to stop herself from touching Aveline again. It was a bothersome and confusing feeling and she wasn't sure she wanted to replicate it.
Hmm. "I see." Aveline did not exactly see, but she didn't know what else to say. Possible a chop shop. Or a car crusher. "Thank you for telling me."
"We wouldn't want another car to get chopped up. It was a close one. But I was standing guard with my knife." Alice fidgeted. She felt exposed and it wasn't the time of day she usually went out side.
Definitely a chopshop, then. "No, we wouldn't." Aveline gave her a smile. "Thank you, Alice."
"Would you like a drink? Or brunch?" Alice wrung her hands behind her back. She felt..anxious.
"That would be...nice, thanks." Brunch would be nice. And hopefully not so awkward feeling.
"Oh good." Alice had a lot of questions. Most of them would probably be embarassing. She took Aveline's hand again and started off towards a nearby cafe.
Aveline really had no idea how to feel about the hand holding. But it meant the girl was looking past the color of her hair, so it was okay.
Alice wasn't sure how to feel either. Other than a human connection, which had been missing for so long. She found them an outside table where she could watch for cats and stray rabbits, and took a seat.
Aveline placed the envelope where she could keep an eye on it and ordered some coffee and a sandwich. She was curious about the envelope's contents, but felt it would be best to open it later, in her own apartment.
Alice glanced at it curiously. She looked like she wanted to touch it. She wanted to touch it so bad her fingers itched! Which sounds dirtier than it really was supposed to. She touched Aveline's hand, "Try the special."
Aveline glanced at the menu and nodded. The special looked acceptable. She wondered for a moment if Alice had been deprived of extended human contact during whatever stay she had in a hospital. That might explain her apparent sudden fixation on touching a person she trusted.
Alice had been deprived, as much by her own choice as by the hospital worrying for her safety and the safety of others. It had been lonely, and she'd gotten violent when touched at times. So this was a very new feeling. She didn't know how to process it.
She ordered the special as well.
The special was quiet nice. As was the coffee. Afterward, Aveline stared at the envelope for a moment. She should get home and have a look at this. But she should make sure Alice made it home okay. "May I walk you home?"
Alice looked up from her drink. She'd spent the last several moments deep in thought. Another time, another place, thousands of miles away. Her eyes seemed to slowly regain focus, "Please."
Aveline smiled and stood up. She tucked the envelope under one arm and head out of the cafe. She kept one hand where Alice could take it, if she wanted to.
And Alice? Took it.
