Most boys Nemo's age were getting ready for parties, or sleeping in on a Saturday. It wasn't that Nemo was opposed to either. In fact, he liked parties and sleeping in, but no parties interested him today, and he'd been up to watch the failed rocket launch. Dad had stayed asleep. He slept a lot these days, and Nemo worried for him. The man was growing ill to the point that he was often in a wheel chair. Nemo didn't think his dad would mind if he started to clear the garage of things that were only gathering dust, so he could convert it into his own space. His room was starting to become too small to hold everything Nemo wanted to do. He needed a space to work, and the garage was perfect.
The person who'd responded could have gotten the stuff for free, but as soon as they offered money, Nemo wasn't going to turn it down. A hundred and fifty bucks was a hundred and fifty bucks closer to a motorcycle. He even dusted the items the person asked for and put them safely aside while he used one of the three work benches in the garage and a rotating saw to cut a 2 x 4 that would serve as a shelf once he had everything put together. A joint sat safely on the edge of the table, unlit until he turned off the saw, lifted it back up, flipped his safety goggles over his head, and took up the joint and lighter. He deserved a break. He was sweaty and the person wasn't there yet.
Nemo lit the joint between his lips and took in a long pull. He'd moved most of his charts into the garage: the star charts, planet charts, the rocket launch charts, all of them already hung on the walls. The rest could wait until he had the shelves finished. The sound of the buzz saw still rang in his ears, and maybe that was to blame for him not being able to hear anything that wasn't the beat of his own heart.
