What: Lunch!
Rating/Warnings: Low, a little talk of sex, and turning into ponies

If a woman could step out of a storybook, or perhaps a myth, it looked as though Luthien had. She wore a shimmery blue dress (that had started out as a pair of jeans and a blouse) and there almost seemed to be a glow about her. Her hair was pulled back, black as midnight, and her ears ended in distinct points. She was nearly every much the famous beauty she’d become known for in her dreams.
She approached Cadence’s table and smiled.
Cadence wasn’t suffering from any wardrobe malfunctions like the rest of the Orange County seemed to be. She was in a long sleeved shirt and jeans, cursing the weather. It’d been so beautiful just last week, and now it was a bit rainy again. And then she saw Luthien, coming into the shop looking like a disney Princess. Her jaw dropped a bit and she stood up from her chair.
She hadn’t ordered her lunch yet, she was waiting for her friend. And now lunch was the furthest thing from her mind. “...wow.”
“Hello.” She smiled at Cadence, a little nervously, and took a seat. “I promise you I did not leave the house wearing this dress.”
“Even if you did,” Cadence slipped back into her own seat. “Wow. It’s pretty fantastic. And the ears?”
“This is how I look in my dreams. I have..these ears. And there are other changes that are more subtle.” She hoped Elphaba didn’t mind.
“Wow. That’s amazing.” Cadence said. If she’d seen this before she’d seen Kurt’s changes, she might have been a little more paranoid or suspicious or startled. But that was nothing compared to what her boyfriend went through. “...are you... enjoying the change?” She asked, tentatively.
“Yes. It was shocking at first, but there are some side benefits. I haven’t fully thought about it, but I won’t get sick ever again, and I’m even more graceful.” She was rather happy about that.
Cadence was a little jealous. “Won’t ever get sick again? I’d go for that.” She said, grinning. See? Silver lining.
“Oh yes...I won’t ever have to shave my legs again, either.” That was the other silver lining. There was one...major downside, but she didn’t feel like that was affecting her, not yet.
Cadence laughed. “Well, that’s good! A lot less water wasted in the shower. Good for the environment.” She beamed. “So... you wanted to talk about it? I mean, how can I help?”
She licked her lips. “I have a problem..from my dreams. And I don’t know how I’m going to...face this. If it means what I think it means.”
Cadence nodded, hoping to look encouraging. She wasn’t about to judge. Especially not considering what she’d been going through with her dreams, and what Kurt was going through with his. “Go on.”
"When my kind makes love, we bind our souls to each other. It is marriage, the act of sex. But I married a mortal. And when he passed, I withered away." Luthien folded her hands on the table. "Elphaba and I... I didn’t feel the bonding. Perhaps because I'm still mortal. I don't know what it means...if I don't love her, or because she is a woman...or because my soul belongs to someone who isn't here."
Cadence’s eyes went a little wide at that, and then she sat for a moment in silence. “I don’t... I don’t know.” She said, giving her head a little shake. “Are there... your kind... who mate for life with the same sex?” Saying it that way made her think of penguins.
She laughed. “In the history of the elves, as I dreamed of it, there was only one who ever remarried after his wife’s death. We mate for life, which seems to be many tens of thousands of years long. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of two who were of the same sex. Beyond rumors, anyway. I’d assume it would be the same way? Except with women there’s no.....you know.”
“No... what?” Cadence asked.
“Well there’s penetration...” She blushed. “ I was going to say there wasn’t, but there kind of is.”
Cadence went scarlet. “Ohhhhh,” she said, meaning that Luthien didn’t have to explain further. “I understand. Well... the hormones are the same, aren’t they? The release of oxytocin during sexual stimulation and climax? Unless it’s different for an Elf, it shouldn’t matter if the stimulation is by hand or ... y’know... other body part.”
“I would think so! The emotions and the...orgasm is the same, at least if it’s anything like my dreams should be.” She couldn’t believe she was even saying all this. “So I don’t know why we didn’t bond...and the terrible thing is I didn’t even think about that when we did it. Maybe I just wasn’t..elf enough at the time.”
“Do you want to bond with her?” Cadence asked. She wasn’t like everyone else. Cadence felt like she’d found her soulmate in Kurt. She felt like he was the only man she was ever going to want to be with in her life, which was why she’d given herself to him. Not all women felt that way about men they hadn’t known for that long. “I mean, do you think maybe now that you’re more Elf, you might bond if you two do it again?”
“I...yes, I think so. I don’t know if that’s what she wants, though. It would make it easier for us to communicate wordlessly. I’d know instantly if she were in distress. Or happy. It would be...well it might intrude on her privacy.” Luthien sighed. “And I don’t know what would happen if Beren returned some day. The emotions in the dreams are so intense. They were intense...here, when I knew him. And just as intense with Elphaba. ... I don’t know what to do.”
Cadence nodded. She knew about intense emotions. The love she felt in her dreams was nothing compared to the love she felt here. It was confusing and conflicting. If Shining Armor showed up here, she’d probably freak out a little bit. Okay, a lot. But she wanted Kurt, she’d made her decision. She’d given him everything, her heart and soul. To Cadence, it was as good as an Elf bond. “I don’t know what to tell you. Who knows if it’ll truly happen with Elphaba? She’s a human, maybe it’s different when it’s with humans. And who knows if Beren will show up, too. You can’t wait for something like that to happen. It might never.”
“Beren was a human too. My father was furious...” Luthien smiled sadly. “I know he’s out there, Beren. I...want to see him and I don’t, if you could understand. I love Elphie...”
“Oh. Wow. You know he’s out there?” Cadence asked. “...I suppose you’re in love with two people. Thankfully you don’t have to choose.”
“I met him before. We fell in love, but my father chased him away.” It mirrored the dream world quite strikingly. Enough that she wondered if Beren had gone on some grand quest for her.
“Oh, so you’ve got a history with him.” Cadence said. She wasn’t sure what that meant. Had her involvement with him affected her dreams? It made her feel a little nervous that Shining Armor might show up here.
“I met him back home, in the woods by our house. We fell instantly in love. My parents didn’t approve, and one day Beren had enough and left.” Luthien sighed. “That was over a year ago. I came out here recently and...then I started to dream.”
“So you think that the Beren that you knew back before you moved here is the same Beren from your dreams?” She asked. Cadence had never met anyone from her dreams. They were all ponies, though, so it wasn’t as if she was about to bump into them here.
“Yes, I’m afraid that he is. He looks the same, he...feels the same.” She blushed again. “Do you know if any of your friends are here?”
“I’ve read a little bit about some other people having dreams about being ponies, but I don’t really know them. Maybe I haven’t gotten that far in my dreams? I’ve just dreamed about living in Canterlot, babysitting, getting my Cutie Mark, and dating Shining Armor. I don’t know how many friends I have outside of that.”
“That’s so strange!” Being a pony. She couldn’t imagine. She didn’t seem all that horrified by the idea.
“...it’s really strange. I don’t have fingers. Just hooves. But I’ve got a unicorn horn that gives me magic, and I’ve got wings to fly... it’s so bizarre.” She didn’t want to mention her fears about turning into the alicorn from her dreams.
“The wings must be so beautiful!” Luthien could look on the bright side of just about anything. Flying would be spectacular. She wondered if Cadence would turn into one... “Wouldn’t it be marvelous if you could transform into a flying unicorn at will?”
“So long as I could transform back.” Cadence said, softly. Almost bitterly.
“Of course!” She reached over and took Cadence’s hand. “Fate isn’t so cruel a creature as to banish a woman like you to such a thing.”
Cadence gave her hand a little squeeze. “Thank you.” She said after a moment. It was nice to hear, though she still had her fears. “So.” She sat up a little. “Should we have some lunch?”
“I’m starving!” Luthien laughed. Life was all a grand adventure to her, and she had every intention of bringing her friends along for the ride.
“Good. This place has the best paninis. I just adore the one with pesto and feta.” Cadence couldn’t help but grin at her friend. She still had fears, but was feeling a lot better about everything. And she was glad that she could be a supportive ear for Luthien, too!
