The house mayor Jennifer set them up in was pretty nice. Neena helped set things up, but she was clearly distracted all day. When it started getting dark, she went for a walk on the beach, which turned into a sit on the beach as soon as their house was out of sight. Right now she wanted some space.
She felt strange. Before things had been fun and interesting, but after seeing Logan like that, she was officially over the future. She missed her home, her dog, her whole way of life. She sighed, hugging her legs to her chest and resting her chin on her knees. She couldn't even cry, she was too tired to get that sad.
She would like to prevent this future, but there was a part of her that wondered if that would be Logan’s fate, regardless of what the world was like.
Nate sought her out,. after awhile. Partially because no one should be alone in this time and place, and partially because he was concerned. She was his friend, companion, and sometimes, almost like a cross between a sister, a mother, and a potential lover. Even at his age, all of that was confusing. But it meant... he cared.
So he walked down the beach toward her, and settled near her. She had been gone some hours and he just sat.
He didn’t say anything at first.
Neena looked up, and nodded to him in greeting, but she didn’t say anything, either. The sky and water were indistinguishable from each other, and all she could really see was stars. There were times during this trip that had been comforting, their light had struck her as being hopeful. Now she wasn’t sure what to think about them, or if she should think anything at all. She took a deep breath. “We can’t fix everything.”
“Never can. Life won’t allow it. And sometimes... some things can’t be fixed, only ended.” His voice was gentle, and sad, and he sighed, and gently touched her back, once, before dropping his hand. He sat there and smiled a little.
“Yeah, and sometimes you can’t do either.” She turned to look at him. “I’m glad you dragged me into this, even if it does hurt right now.” Sometimes she looked at him and saw a little boy all grown up, and sometimes she saw a young man. It depended on her mood, on how nostalgic she was feeling.
Nate nodded. “Me too.” He sighed and smiled at her a little. “I’m sorry things got so shitty this time. I’m hoping they’ll be better for awhile now.” He had been exploring and talking to a few people. “Seems like we are getting both respect and fear and the mayor likes that. We got a shipment of seeds, blankets, and food. We’ll at least be able to sleep well and plant for tomorrow.” He didn’t trust it entirely, but he was willing to try.
Neena nodded. “It’s all we can do, really.” She uncurled herself, laying back on the sand. “If we can stay here, even just for a couple months, I think it’ll help us all a lot. We all need more stability.” Especially Rachel. Neena smiled softly. “I didn’t think I’d ever get to raise a kid. This has been an interesting trip.”
Nate nodded. “I wouldn’t mind. I’m working on making our house even better. Already got the plot ready to plant. Also, there are a few low level mutants here, so it feels a little more... welcoming. Not to mention... the ugly neighbor down the street? He’s an alien. His grandparents apparently came during the old days of the OC and never left. “ Nate shrugged. It’s kind of nice to feel wanted a little.
“Rachel likes you a lot. She definitely is taking after you. She keeps making up fake tattoos around her eyes.” Nate smirked. It was cuteeeeee.
“I wondered about that.” She turned onto her side so she was facing Nathan. “I like Rachel a lot. She’s turning out pretty good, all things considered.” She closed her eyes for a moment, listening to the waves. “I guess we’re going to be in the future for a while. We should think about trying to stay here as long as we can.” None of the guys in town had been anything worse than ambivalent to her. It was a lot different than Oregon. Probably because of the mayor.
He smiled as he mirrored her and watched her, nodding. “I think so too. She is smart, precocious, and pays attention.” Nate poked her slightly. “I think we are.” He cast an eye toward her. “Probably. It wouldn’t hurt to be settled for awhile. Maybe establish our own home and our own legacy here.”
He smirked. “Nate, Scott, Rachel, and Neena’s Halfway Home.”
Neena snorted. “I wouldn’t mind that, honestly. It’s kind of nice being able to have a positive influence on people, instead of solving every problem by shooting it.” Granted, she liked to shoot things too. Quite a bit. Taking care of people was a nice change of pace. “Maybe we’ll get to have lives, do something beside survive.” She hoped they would, anyway.
“Could be nice. Might even mean being able to relax, for, you know, longer than an hour.” He grinned at her and nudged her. “What would you do, if you could relax here, to keep from going mad?”
“I don’t know. I don’t really have any hobbies. I guess I’d look for someone to spend time with. Seeing Logan kind of reminded me of some things I’ve been missing, but haven’t really had time to worry about.” She chuckled a little. “But I doubt I’ll find anyone I like in this town. How can you have a relationship with someone born two hundred years in your own future?”
“I dunno. Maybe it’s easier than you think, maybe harder. Life seems to be both right now. I think I’ll take up farming and tech. See if I can’t reignite the industrial age, though possibly with more environmentally friendly tech.” He nodded.
“You can do it, I’m sure.” Neena said with a smile. “I’m sure the Mayor would like it if you did figure out better farming techniques.” That was just like him. He always thought big.
Nate shook his head. “Maybe. Not alone, though. Might need your and Rachel’s help.” He grinned at her. “Ever thought of being a farmer?” His grin was almost challenging.
Neena laughed. “I could do it, I think. Maybe growing plants is as satisfying as growing people. And if it’s not, it would be a good place to put some of the more restless kids to work.” She moved a little closer to Nate, and hugged him. “Thanks for coming out to talk to me. I get caught up in how crappy things are sometimes.”
Nate smiled at her. “Could be. And could be fun.” He hugged her close and kissed her temple and cheek. “You’re welcome. Couldn’t let you mope out here alone. The least I could do is mope with you.”
He grinned.
Neena shivered at the kisses. She was seeing him in a new light now, one she’d been avoiding for a couple years. His body was warm against hers, especially in the growing chill. She let herself think about him as a man, not less than her, but her equal now. He was fierce in battle, and at all other times he was as balanced and healthy as their situation would allow. “I wouldn’t mind it if we stopped moping.”
“Moping can be stopped.” He hugged her and grinned. “Want to go for a walk?” He smiled at her, eyebrows waggling. “There are some lovely areas of the beach these days.”
“Sure.” Neena said, with a nod. She slowly stood up, stretching out a little. “I need to warm back up, my butt’s numb from sitting on the cold sand.”
He rose and chuckled, then swatted her butt. “No numb butt! Not allowed.” He stretched and then started down the beach. It was fun being around her.
Neena made a noise, then turned and swatted him back, hard. “Jerk.” She said it with affection.
He stuck out his tongue. “Jerkette!” He chuckled, grinning at her. “Silly.” Nate liked hanging out with her. She treated him, a lot more these days anyway, as a grownup. And he liked that feeling. He had never been a particularly childish kid.
Nate smiled. “This area is peaceful., Sometimes, I feel guilty for not thinking about mom more, you know, but this is so nice, now.” He’d just gotten the hot water working recently, and the plumbing to full. It had involved negotiations with the sewer things, but that had gone well.
“It’s okay to let that happen. We forget to think about the past when the present has our attention, and that’s not a bad thing.” She reached out for his hand, without thinking, as they walked. “I’m sure your mom’s doing okay.”
He was a little startled by her hand but squeezed it and held it. Why not? Walking with Neena was nice, Nate decided.
Nate smiled. “I hope so. She’s been not as good lately, and she was never... “ He sighed, shoulders slumping. “She hasn’t dealt well with the hardships I’ve gone through being different, and she has been dealing less well since her parents died and we moved to the OC.”
Neena nodded, squeezing his hand a little. “That sucks. I moved out when I was sixteen because I couldn’t deal with my family’s bullshit, so I don’t really have any advice. But you’ve got a lot of good people around you, you’ll get taken care of, one way or another.”
He smiled thankfully at her.
“Thanks. I know. I mostly worry about her. She’s a good woman. She just isn’t... cut out for the weird.” He felt sad about it. But he shook his head.
“So I am going to make a garden and working electricity and solar energy, and we are going to have an awesome house.” He smirked at her.
“I even made you a present in my quest for electricity.” He pulled out a small package and handed it over. The wrapping paper was worse for wear and tied with rope since tape was hard to find these days. Inside was a rare, and now fully functioning dildo with vibrating functions.
“I miss electricity.” Neena said, with great feeling. The present made her smile, even though it looked a little ragged. She unwrapped it, then laughed. “Trying to tell me something, Nate?” She waved the toy at him. It was funny, but thoughtful in a strange way.
Nate snerked. “You being you, I figured you would want it. How long has it been since the last time you had sex?” He was aware of her as a sexual person. He thought she might be interested in it until she found a partner.
“Before Oregon, if you count the drunken hookups, and right before we got sucked into this if you don’t.” She didn’t, really. Scott just wasn’t her type. “But it’s not the same. It’s not just the orgasms I miss.” She put the toy in her back pocket. “Thank you, though. It’s a thoughtful gift.”
“Oh? Why not?” He wasn’t really that up to the know-how on physicality, even having lived through his teens already once. He had been a little busy for hook ups back then.
“You’re welcome.”
“Because what I miss most of all.” Neena said, looking up at him. “Is being touched. I mean, I really love cock. But the way lovers touch each other, it’s. . . hard to explain.” She wanted to touch him, then, and that was going to make things awkward if he had no interest in her. “You’d have to experience it.”
Nate swallowed, then nodded. “Ah, oh.” He smiled a little. “I’ve never done that and never really been interested.” He cocked his head at her. “Do you mean... do you want to have sex with me?” He was a little startled. “I thought you saw me as an annoying little... brother-ish thing.”
Neena flailed a little bit. Did she want to have sex with him? “You’re not annoying, and I have enough little brothers without adopting another one. I see you as a young man just getting started in the world.” He hadn’t been interested. Well, that summed that up pretty well. “I shouldn’t have said anything, I’m sorry.” She pressed her lips together, feeling like a jackass. Of course he wouldn’t have feelings for her. She was old enough to be his mom, and had been taking care of him at the start of this adventure.
“Why not? I’ve never had sex, Neena. I have no idea what to do as far as even looking into having sex. Most of my energy has been channeled into saving our asses and building things for the last fifteen years and it’s not like any conversation we ever had prepared me for this!” He flailed a hand at her. “Why didn’t you just ask?”
Neena stood there for a minute, mouth open. “Oh. I didn’t think about that.” She took a deep breath. “Do you want to have sex with me? It won’t be weird or awkward for you?” That was what she worried about most. She wanted it to be fun and happy for him. Her first time was awesome, and she wanted that for him.
Nate laughed then. He laughed hard. He couldn’t help it. Then he kissed her. Hard and long and passionately.
“Shut up and let’s go get a room.”
He was ready to try this.
Neena laughed. “Thank God we waited until we had something beside the mako.” What would the protocol be for kicking Scott out of the house for an hour? She’d figure it out when they got there.
A little over an hour later, Nate was sitting up, grinning, as he watched her. The bed worked, the sex had been awesome and he was grinning like he would never stop. Three times had not been enough for him. “We definitely need to do that more.”
Neena laughed as she wobbled to her feet. “I like the way you think. Did we remember to grab water to wash up with?” She kissed him again, because she couldn’t get enough of it. He was amazing. She was lost, and she knew it.
“Heh,. Next surprise. The showers work, Neena. Just turn it on slowly. The new hot water heater goes slow.” He smirked. He had saved that surprise.
He kissed her back and ruffled her hair.
“I’ll take second turn.”
“Screw that. Come on, there’s probably room for both of us. We’re pretty acrobatic.” She smirked at him, tugging him by his hand to get him up and moving.
He snerked and followed her into the shower.
It was going to be an incredible adventure.
