Gandalf puttered into the nursery, like ninja, and looked around. Good, Navi was nowhere in sight. He snuck over to the counter, and put a large package onto it, and then started to sneak back off. Like an old wizardly ninja.

She wasn’t in the nursery every day. But when she showed up the next day, someone told her that there was a package in her office. It was large, and she blinked as she poked it with a pen. You know. In case it exploded.

The package didn’t explode. It just sat there, inert. Waiting. Waiting to be opened to reveal the surprise inside.

Well, if it wasn’t going to explode. Navi put on a face mask in the event it was something toxic and airborne as she opened it.

A little itty bitt puff of smoke in the shape of a dragon and inside was some kind of toy for a baby. The kind you hang over a crib. There were eagles and dragons, little wizard hats, and what looked like fireworks frozen in time.

Navi’s eyes filled with tears and she hugged the box to her chest. Immediately she hopped into her truck, taking the mobile with her, driving to where she knew he lived. Gandalf had outdone himself.

Gandalf was playing with some fireworks when Navi drove up. He put down what he was working on and straightened, stretching his back, before shuffling towards her truck. “I take it you got my gift, child?”

Her wings were out, fluttering in the wind, so when Navi launched herself toward him, it wasn’t on her feet. No, she flew toward him, glitter and music left in her wake, hugging him tightly and grinning. “Oh, you’re wonderful, you are!”

Laughing, the wizard hugged her. “Oh, your wings are beautiful!” He kissed her on the cheek and smiled. “I thought you would like it. I made it especially for you.”

Her eyes were damp, and if Gandalf was observant, he’d be able to spy a bump peeping through her jeans. “The little one will like it very much, I’m sure. If I don’t put it over my bed!” She turned so he could touch her wings if he liked. “I love it.”

Chuckling, Gandalf stroked his fingers along Navi’s wings. They were beautiful indeed. He could sense the spark of life within Navi (how could he not?). He suspected her glow wasn’t entirely fairy related. “I’ll make another, then.” He grinned.

“Ohh, you don’t have to do that! The fire fairy has one, that’s all that matters.” Navi ran her fingers over her stomach. “The little one is swimming around already.”

"Do you know if its a girl or a boy?" Gandalf asked. He bent over to peer at the bump.

“Not yet, nope. I want to be surprised.” She had a hunch it was a little girl, even though Pete had his heart set on a boy.

“No matter, you’ll have one of each,” Gandalf promised her, with all the assurance and gravitas a wizard could afford.

Navi laughed. “I’m sure. Pete wants twelve kids. At least.”

“It’s a good thing you’re a fairy, or your stomach will end up perpetually round!” Gandalf laughed. “So he treats you well, then?” It was a grandfatherly type of worry.

“Oh, he’s wonderful. If I believed in soul mates, I’d say he’s mine. But he’s ... I don’t know, we got lucky.” She was blushing a little to herself, her wings fluttering happily.

“There are many ways a soul can bond,” Gandalf replied, wisely. “Sometimes, they don’t become mates until you meet.”

“Then that must be what happened. Even the first time I saw him, I knew.” She’d seen him in a bar, and she’d felt her heart grow three sizes. Which was weird - she’d already had a big one.

“It sounds lovely,” Gandalf replied, wistfully. He could honestly say that that was an emotion he had never really known.

“Do you have any little ones?” She fluttered up and onto a hedge, sitting gently on it, patting its leaves and thanking it quietly.

“Me? Oh no. Not any children, at any rate.” He considered the hobbits his little ones, of a sort. “That is not my destiny, I’m afraid.”

“Well, you’re sort of everyone’s dad anyway.” Navi smiled. “You don’t have to be linked by blood to be family, you know.” In Navi’s dreams she was far, far older, and even though she was childlike, she was still wise.

“I know.” Gandalf smiled cheerfully. “Your grandfather did well by you. He’d be so very happy. He is so very happy."

“I know. He was the best person I could’ve grown up with besides my parents, I think. I think they’re happy too.” She smiled, blushing brightly. “You know, in my dreams, he’s a tree?”

“No? Is he? Trees are some of th ebest sorts, you know.” Gandalf winked, as if he were imparting a great secret upon her.

“Oh, I know! He helped me protect this race of people who stayed children for all time. He was their caretaker, and so were we blue fairies.” Navi went little for a moment, fluttering around Gandalf’s head. “Like this!”

The old man laughed, and clapped his hands together. “That is extraordinary! That would have been useful, I feel, if I could have done that.”

“It’s coming in handy!” She went big again, rubbing her stomach. “I couldn’t do that in my dreams, but I’m glad I can here.”

“It won’t harm the baby?” He asked, concerned.

“Nope, it gets tiny too! It’s why I think she’s part fairy. It. It’s part baby.” Navi shook her head at the slip.

“MMhhhhhmmmm,” Gandalf said, knowingly. He wished he could bring his pipe out, but bad for the baby, and all.

“What!” Navi folded her arms, eyedarting nearly audibly.

“You have suspicions, am I wrong?”

“No. I just ... I just know. But Pete wants a boy so badly, I don’t want to make him sad.”

“A girl this time, and a boy next time. You’d want the girl to be older, anyway. Better for the boy to be the pickie, and not the picker-oner.”

Navi laughed. “I don’t know when next time will be. I still have two more trimesters on this one! Let her cook!” She flailed her hands lightly, laughing.

Gandalf smiled cheerily. “Something tells me you will have many buns.”

“Oh, Pete’s already trying to make another one. I told him it only works one at a time, but he doesn’t believe me.” She didn’t mind.

“Perhaps it’s just practice?” Gandalf suggested with a laugh. “To make sure he gets it right this time?”

That made Navi giggle and blush. “We’ve been practicing since the day we met, Gandalf.”

"Reminds me of my youth." And not so long ago with Lorna.

“You should find a nice lady.” Navi nodded. “Or man. I’m non judgey.”

“My inclinations are towards ladies, but I’m afraid most of the ones I know are either too young, too taken, or both.” He didn’t seem all that bothered.

“Pfft, too young. The taken’s the only obstacle!” Navi grinned, hugging him again.

He chuckled. “There was this lass with lovely green hair and a fantastic bum, but I think she only loved me for my weed.” He winked. “And another with fantastic red hair.”

“Soooo, you like bright colors and bottoms. Me too. There was this girl in college, pink hair.” Navi sighed. “Best two months of my life until I met Pete.”

Gandalf laughed. “Why only two months?”

“Oh, she moved away. But it was nice while it lasted!”

“I’m sorry.” Gandalf said, sincerely. He understood, though he usually did the moving away. Or the women moved on.

“Eh, it happens! And besides, she’s happy now and so am I’. That’s what matters. So, bright hair, pretty bottoms, ladies. I’ll keep my eyes open for Operation White Staff.” Navi saluted him.

“As long as everyone is happy,” Gandalf replied. He paused, then added. “I do not mind mammaries, either.”

“Pfft, who does? Mine are getting huge and Pete and I are both thrilled. I just wish they weren’t so owwie.” Navi poked one absently, toward the top where it hurt less.

“They’ll get better. I promise.” As if he would know. Gandalf gave her another hug. “Shouldn’t you get back to your shop?”

“Oh, I’m trying just to own it while I’m pregnant. I’m going stircrazy, but it’s good for me to have time off and it’ll be better when I have a brood to raise.” She patted her tummy. “Want me to sing to your plants?”

“..I think we all would like that, very much.”

Hopping off of the bush, Navi turned to thank it, kissing its leaves gently. She followed Gandalf, excited to talk to his plants.

Gandalf took Navi’s hand to guide her. The plants were going to have quite an evening!
