Who: Jane Foster and Tony Stark
Where: Stark Towers
When: Monday lunch time
What: Jane gets a little side tracked when she goes to meet Darcy for lunch ie. Jane and Tony talk science!
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Jane had to admit to feeling fairly comfortable as she strode through the halls of Stark Tower to meet Darcy for lunch. The hallways were busy, but not crowded and there was a pleasant hubbub of activity in all the rooms she could see into. In fact, she got so distracted by the equations on written on a wall mounted touchscreen that she came to a stop in the middle of the hallway as she worked through the fascinating work in her head.

Tony nodded, as if doing equations in his head of his own.

Personnel sorts of equations.

"Walk with me?" He headed down the hallway, out to the main campus parkway that connected the buildings. "You're working with Carter, huh? How many hours a week?"

"Every hour I can at the moment it seems," she fell into step next to him as they walked. "I've pretty much caught up on anything I missed during the Blu Flu thing, but I've got to a point in my research where I really need a particle accelerator, and I don't need to tell you, but you don't really find those just lying around Orange County," she joked, moving her gaze from the view out over the walkway to him.

"Tell me about it. That's why you just build one in your basement, saves a lot of time."

Tony shrugged, holding the door open for her.

"What are you working on? Specifically, that you'd need the accelerator?"

"Oh please, Mr Stark," she moved past him and through the doorway. "Show me a physicist who doesn't want to smash subatomic particles together at nearly the speed of light," she cast over her shoulder.

At that, Tony smirked even more even though he was thinking semi-existential thoughts. What was with this part of the world that all these ridiculously intelligent people were just massing here? What was the point of it all?

What did they have to get ready for?

Pushing aside the worry, he shrugged at her. "Bad ones? I take it this is the part where you beg to borrow my toy?"

Jane stopped in her tracks at his words. "Oh god! Is that why you think I'm here? No, I was coming by to pick up my friend Darcy and take her to lunch," she smiled as she gestured back to the way they came. "No, I'd never do that Mr Stark," she tried to reassure him. She really hadn't come with the intention of borrowing his 'toy'.

At that, Tony felt guilty.

"Never thought you were for a second, but I thought I'd offer since you were here and wanting to smash things. I like to think I'm one of the good physicists, so I get the urge."

He shrugged, hands in his pockets. "Your call. I don't mind lending a hand to a researcher, especially one who has the balls to call out a room full of guys who can't bother to check their math."

Jane laughed at that, giving a little shrug, "Well with the bias in the field, a girl's gotta be prepared to stand up for herself." She turned to him with a cheeky grin. "Now Mr Stark, do you just go around offering your supercollider to any old physicist without first knowing their name?"

"No, only the ones who can correct my company's math," Tony said easily enough, grinning.

"Also the ones who publish an impressive last year on Supersymmetry while simultaneously working on their Ph.D. dissertation, Miss Foster."

"Why Mr Stark," Jane grinned. "What were you doing reading a lowly PhD student's paper? I honestly didn't think that got much beyond my professors," she could feel herself starting to blush. She'd never been recognised for her work before and it was an honour that the infamous Tony Stark had a) read it and b) remembered it and recognised her.

Most people assumed most things slipped by Tony's radar, and a decent chunk did. Birthdays (that weren't his), the wearing of socks, allergies of his lifetime personal assistant, but when it came to engineering and physics journals, Tony read everything.

You couldn't stay ahead if you let people lap you.

"It was impressive, like I said. You have some good ideas, which is why I'm willing to lend you Celly." Yes, he'd named it. "Just remember she gets cranky if she misses her nap and is lactose intolerant."

Jane burst out laughing at that. Trust Tony Stark to be eccentric enough to name his supercollider! she thought, smothering her laughter with her hand.

"Well thank you Mr Stark," she nodded in deference. "I would be eternally grateful if I could use Celly. With CERN shutting down for repairs, it would put my research back by at least two years," she told him. "I'll just have to email Professor Cox and tell him it won't be his name on my paper now," she grinned up at him.

God, did she ever say the magic words. Tony loved his name on things. Big things, with shiny letters.

Or footnotes. Whatever.

"It's not CERN, but it'll do ya. Besides, then you don't have to fight off the Boson crowd. I hear it devolves into a Jets vs. Sharks rumble every so often, and I don't know if your snap game is up to it."

She could tell by the way his eyes lit up that she'd said the right thing and mentally high-fived herself.

"Then that is another thing to be eternally grateful for," she smiled, loving the image of two camps of physicists facing off against one another next to the accelerator through the medium of dance. "I don't think my ballet skills would be up to the right standard to fight off the Bosonites anymore!"

"See, there you go. Physics dance wars are nothing to go unprepared into. I took five years of jazz and tap before MIT."

Tony waved at Jane, smirking just slightly. "Any time you want access, let me know. I'll program you and Carter into JARVIS's access protocols. And whenever you find time, consider an open internship yours for the grabbing."

"Huh," she imagined the scene, and it actually came quite easily to her; Tony Stark doing a modern dance number on stage in top hat, tails and a cane. She shook her head to catch onto what he was talking about now. Did I just hear him right?

"Seriously?!" She gaped at him, an open internship at Stark Industries was huge. She stammered for words, trying to keep tears from forming in her eyes at the prospect, "Th...thank you!"

Tony grinned as he headed towards the CEO office to bother Pepper before taking her to dinner. All the Avengers had their collections; Clint had his bow things, Thor seemed to collect women, Bruce had Dexter and Steve obviously collected Freedom.

Tony? Always Science.

"Don't thank me, Miss Foster. You'll earn it. See you around." With another wave, he headed towards the Administrative building, whistling.
