John was smiling. he loved this job. Sometimes he got some really odd cases, and sometimes, some winners, and he enjoyed all of the above. Now he was headed out to help someone who truly deserved it, someone who helped other people a lot. She as an inspiration, and he had read enough to know she truly deserved the help his foundation wanted to give her.
Arriving at her college, he asked a few questions, showed his credentials, and arranged for a guide to lead him to the right building. Only when he was there did he bid them adieu and headed in to seek out this Cadence, member of the sorority and fund raiser for the needy.
Cadence was in the Childcare Center on campus. Since so many people were out for so long during the Blue Flu epidemic, they had to play a lot of catch-up this week. She was helping some children get their coats on to go outside into the little yard and play when she saw a stranger wandering in her direction. After getting the hat on the last child she stood up straight and gave him a small smile. “Hola. Can I help you?”
“I hope so. My name is John Jones, and I work for Red Planet International, an organization that seeks to help those in need, and I was wondering if you had a few minutes to talk with me somewhere.” He stuck out his hand, smiling, as he nodded to her.
Cadence reached forward and took hold of his hand. She shook it, smiling. "Of course, Mister Jones. This way?" She motioned for him to follow her, then told one of her coworkers that she was taking a few minutes in the office. "Red Planet International? " she asked him, leading him to the office so they could talk.
He followed her in and smiled. “It’s a philanthropic organization that tries to help people who need assistance, and also recognizes those who do the same, those like you.” he smiled as he settled into the office with her.
“We want to recognize you.”
“Recognize me?” This was actually her boss’s office, but the group of gals who all ran and worked the daycare on campus used it for lots of things. Cadence moved around to the other side of the desk and slipped into the chair there, and motioned for him to take a seat. “What do you mean?”
“You efforts, and your actions have raised a lot for local charities, helped a lot of local people. Your name was entered into a lottery and you won. So we have a small token of our gratitude for helping the people around you.”
He opened his briefcase, and pulled out a small packet. first out of it was a small form, showing she had raised a lot of money and materials. Second, there was a smaller packet, which he handed over. It contained a endowment to her favorite charity, a check to her college to defray some of her expenses, and valuable gift cards to local stores for her. As well as a certificate for a full day at a local day spa.
Cadence accepted the packet and looked through it. Her mouth fell open and she gaped, turning through the pages. “... what...” She said, looking up at him with a really confused and curious expression. “This is too much... I can’t accept this.” Though, she really wanted to. A spa day? “It’s far too generous.”
“Yes you can. Cadence, maybe you don’t realize what you have done.” he smiled and handed over the next packet. It contained letters, and small notes, all things about Cadence and the difference she had made to fellow students, to teachers, to the needy, and to the firefighters also raising money. “You’ve made a high impression and changed a lot of lives, already, and we want to encourage you to continue.”
Cadence took a long moment to flip through the letters. Apparently she'd been nominated for this, and her friends and family all supported it. Tears were falling down her cheeks as she got to the last letter. "Oh, wow." She'd had no idea this was coming.
John smiled softly as he handed her over a small packet of tissues. “You’re a good woman, and you deserve this. I’ve spoken to several people and they were all supportive of this. They know you won’t abuse it, and after reading about you, I know you won’t either.” In fact, he was willing to bet she would use some of those gift cards for others, because that was just how she was. But he had spoken to her friends and family, and they would make sure she used some on herself at least.
“Thank you, Cadence, for being an inspiration, and for helping people. And when you are done in college, and looking for something to do next, we’re hoping you just might think on Red Planet. We could use people with your vision.”
“Oh, wow.” Cadence repeated, reaching forward to take hold of the tissue. She opened the packet and pulled a tissue out to wipe her cheeks. “This, really...” She cleared her throat, closing up the packets with the letters, with the gift cards, and stacked everything up neatly in front of her. “I don’t know how to thank you.” She was going to cherish these letters forever and ever. She wasn’t about to give them back, or to anyone.
“Just be who you are. Do what you do. And know you are appreciated, as you are. For who you are.” John nodded, rising. “It’s an honor to know you, Miss, and I hope to see your works for many more years to come.”
“Thank you, Mister Jones.” Cadence said, pulling herself to her feet. “I uh... I really appreciate it.” She reached forward to shake his hand. “Please excuse me if I don’t walk you out.” She had a little more crying to do.
John smiled and shook her hand, then nodded. “No problem, And if you ever need anything, give me a call.” He flipped out his card, and gently put it into her hand before letting himself out.
FIN.
