WHO: Fred Weasley, Jack Harkness
WHAT: Meeting
WHEN: Backdated to before the spread of the illness / game plot
WHERE: For The Lulz
RATING: TBD, never possible to tell when Harkness is involved.
STATUS: In Progress

It was rare for Fred to have friends come visit him at his shop (beside the occasional Hermione) -- mostly because despite all his social banter he didn't really have a ton, and the ones he did have already worked at the shop with him. So the prospect of making a new friend who was coming to visit at the shop was doubly exciting. Exciting enough for him to secure the rest of the day off to go do friend-type things with this person if he ended up being cool enough, anyway.

Whatever that meant.

And if nothing else? Well, he'd drummed up a bit of business for himself and his twin brother. And that was always a plus.

A joke shop. It was one of the last places Jack had expected to visit, but it certainly sounded like a fun way to spend some time. And from the little they'd spoken to each other online, Fred seemed like a nice enough guy with a wicked sense of humor. Jack could only imagine what things at the shop must be like if the brother was anything like Fred.

He pushed open the door and smiled as he walked inside, tucking his sunglasses into the inner pocket of his jacket. Jack looked around and headed towards the ginger haired young man that matched the photo from the net profile. "Fred? Hi... Jack Harkness. Nice to meet you," he said, flashing a smile and extending a hand.

For every new person to walk into the door and address one of the twins by name, Fred had to fight the terrible, terrible urge to pretend that he was George just to fuck with people.

It was more difficult than many might presume.

Giving a half-laugh turned into a cough, Fred grinned wildly and shook Jack's hand. "A pleasure," he agreed amiably.

"So give me the grand tour of the place. I think I can honestly say that I've never been in an actual joke shop before," Jack said. He grinned as he looked around, nodding to himself as he just took it all in. "You said that you and your brother run and own this place?"

This was definitely going to be fun today. And considering he hadn't been doing much except for working lately, Jack was in need of a little fun. And not even the kind that generally involved getting naked.

"How long have you two been in business for?"

Fred, forever playful, gave a little flourish of a bow before directing him to one side of the shop. It wasn't a huge store, but it was big enough to a tour to be fun. "Right, yeah, my brother George -- he's probably in the back right now -- and I run it. We've been at it for a bit over a year now -- but before that we sold our stuff online. So it's been a total of... maybe 5 years? Actively."

He grinned again; Cheshire. "You'll note it's not just all jokes -- to the left you'll see our collection of rude and funny t-shirts and jumpers. Sure to make any mother scoff. Unless you're Mum has a good sense of humor."

"Five years? Nice. I wouldn't have expected that from someone your age. Unless you're older than you look," Jack teased with a wink. "At any rate, this place is pretty impressive!"

As George showed him around, Jack smiled in amusement as he read a few of the shirts. "My mum's sense of humor was your typical dry, sarcastic British humor. She was a lot more serious than my dad was... I think. It's hard to remember sometimes. They both passed away when I was a teenager, so I lived with my granddad after that."

Ooh, a tease. Fred was terribly amused. "You'd be surprised at how much extra time there is for things when you drop out of high school," Fred said -- just a bit wryly. It certainly hadn't been something that their mother had approved of.

"That sounds rough," said Fred, who wasn't sure how to properly respond to things like 'my parents are dead' -- because, well, he couldn't even imagine. "Well, if you ever need any extra family, I've got a lot of it. Speaking of which, here's the cardboard cut outs we sell of my sister -- with velcro mustaches, of course. She's an actress." Probably best to explain that, so it didn't seem too weird.

"Considering how much time I still managed to find for things while I was in school? Yeah... makes sense. Either way though, looks like you two are doing well for yourselves. So congrats."

Jack waved a hand and smiled, dismissing any worries. "It's fine... don't worry about it. It was a long time ago." He paused an took a long look at the cut-out. Jack had to admit, she wasn't bad looking if you were into gingers with a ton of freckles. "What sort of acting does she do? I don't think I've actually seen any of her work. I'll bet she just loves the mustache though..."

"She doesn't mind it as much as you'd think a little sister might," Fred said, amused. "She does work for Disney. Mostly for kids and little boys who are discovering their sexuality, probably."

Clearly, it was not Fred's fault if someone bought the cutout for not mustachioed purposes.

"Disney, huh? So is it mainly voice over work, or live action sorts of things?" he asked. Jack continued looking around and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

"I think you're right about the sexuality thing. But if it was Disnified, then no one would ever have sex and all babies would be delivered by storks," he joked. "Either that, or they just magically show up."

"Live action. She's on... some show." It was hard to remember what it was called, because for him it was just The Ginny Show. On top of that, it was just hard to watch tv with his little sister in it. He laughed, waiving it off. "I thought that was still how children came to be."

Jack smirked and just shook his head in amusement. "If you serious think that, then I've got a lot to teach you. Anyways though, enough about your sister and making babies. So tell me a little about you and this big family you mentioned. It must be nice... I was an only child, so I never had to deal with any siblings."

Oh, he was a funny one. Fred actually had to hide his grin in the palm of his hand for a moment before moving forward. "Sounds fair. I've got a million stories." He looked over one of the aisles of the shop to spot his employee Verity at the counter before giving a nod -- mostly to himself.

"I've secured the rest of the afternoon off. Fancy a coffee across the street?"

"You just said the magic word, Fred. Quickest way to make me happy is with a good cup of coffee." Jack grinned and gave a wink to the cute shop girl. "I'll even treat."

"It's a date," Fred agreed, amusedly raising his eyebrow over the wink in Ver's direction. That girl just knew how to get attention, he supposed. Then again, judging from the way Jack seemed to act around everyone... well. He had plenty of attention to dole out.

He gave a wave to the girl himself, and then lead the way to the coffeeshop across the street. "Nothing better than working 25 feet away from all the caffeine you'd ever need."

"You're a lucky man. We have to rely on the office coffee machine, or send out runners to pick up decent coffee for us. And half the time, the kid ends up getting something wrong."

Jack opened the door for the pair of them and smiled as he followed Fred inside. "Hi," he said cheerfully to the barrista. "I'd like a large dark roast... no cream or sugar. And my friend here would like..."

He arched an eyebrow and looked over to Fred, waiting for him to order what he wanted.

"The usual," Fred said, with his own cheeky sort of smile at the barista. Of course, he was there on a daily basis and so they paid no real mind to his flirtations or cheekiness. Such was life, he suppose.

"I'm easy," he explained to Jack. "And yeah, we sound a bit luckier. But I guess that's the plus side of owning my own business. Got to choose the location. What is it you do?"

"Nothing wrong with being easy as long as you're not cheap," he teased. He paid for their drinks and moved down to the end to wait.

"I work for a video game company actually. I'm the Art Director at Bad Wolf Interactive. When the company was starting up they hired me on and I had to move out here from the UK. But it's fun, I have some flexibility with my work hours, and there's always something interesting to work on."

Fred rose his brows, impressed and a little shocked. "That's possible one of the coolest jobs a person could possibly have," he pointed out, even though Jack was probably well aware of it. "But I'm sorry -- did you say you're from the UK? I would never have guessed."

"Because I sound more American than English? I blame my family. We travelled a lot and after my parents died, granddad continued with it. Plus I grew up in Blackpool and it's a huge tourist area. And I've found it's easier here to talk like this, than..."

Jack grinned and switched over to a more english sounding accent. "Than to talk like this all the time. Gets a bit tiring having to repeat myself at work when they don't understand me."

"Not to mention the funny looks I get when asking someone to hand me a rubber," he added, having gone back to the American accent.

Fred gave a cackle that made more than one of the baristas turn around and give him a funny look -- but it certainly couldn't be helped. "Oh man ," he said, "that's bloody brilliant, mate. I've been here so long I don't even know how my accent's maintained -- but I nearly forgot about the slang differences."

"Sometimes I'll do it just for fun to see how people react. No one knows what the hell a lift is, but they're starting to get used to it. Plus even when talking like this, I still pronounce certain words different... like schedule." Jack thanked the barista and handed Fred his coffee before picking up his own.

"What is it with people and gingers anyways? Either they love it and wish they were a ginger, or they think the lot of you have no soul." Jack shrugged and sipped his coffee. "Personally? I could care less what hair color someone has."

He listened as Fred explained a little about his siblings and grinned. "I'll bet things are never dull when there's a family gathering."

"I'll bet the ladies have it a bit harder as far as gingers go," Fred said, giving a tsk and a head-shake. "I mean, no one's ever asked me if everything matches proper." Filters? What were those?

"It's definitely exciting," he agreed. "Occasionally a bit awkward, but what can you do. Come sometime. My mum loves new people. Treats them a bit like love-lorn strays though. She can't help herself, I think. Must be so bored with only my sister left at home."

Jack started laughing and he made a point of leaning over just slightly, as if trying to look under the table. "Oh? Why... are you upset no one asks? Because if so, I could ask. Or just take a look." He smirked and then winked as he sipped his coffee.

It was a rare day when Fred couldn't tell if someone was being serious or just joking -- but he had half a thought that maybe Jack wasn't sure either.

"You could always get one of the smaller breeds," Jack suggested. "Lord knows I see plenty of women here in the LA area with dogs that fit in their purses." He rolled his eyes and chuckled.

"It's like they've forgotten that the things actually have feet and can walk for themselves. You're right though... Cocker Spaniels really are adorable. It was probably the fact that despite being cute and flirty, Fred had no real idea on how to socialize on a level that was not just making jokes. Maybe he worked too much.

"Excellent," he said, and smiled like a Cheshire about to get cream.
