Who: Violet, Tate. Yay, it's Violate times. <3
What: Hanging out at the beach with tacos. Aw yea!
Where: Who knows where these crazy teens are gonna end up? Hopefully it's not on someone's lawn.
When: Saturday
Rating: PG13 for cutting and teen hormones and stuff. Thou hast been warned!
Status: Complete!

Tate was convinced he was psychic. Either that, or he was simply used to the routine. Constance tried to corner him before he could make it to the front door. It helped being able to drop a bombshell while flipping her off, that he was going to hang out with a girl from school. It allowed him to have some money pushed into his hands as he diverted his way around his mom, AND get out the door while she acted all proud of him and oh-so-happy that he actually wasn't gay and she had some glimmer of hope for a grandbaby. Someday. After he became a doctor. Or a lawyer.

It would've been awesome if she hadn't said any of that, outloud. But she did. And that's why Tate kept right on flipping her off, until it reached the point that he either pulled his hand back, or it was going to get slammed in the front door. While the effect and shock value of doing that would've been epic win, it probably wouldn't be so great for him to have to ask Violet to take him to the emergency room for a busted wrist or fingers.

Even though he could all but feel his mother's eyes burning holes into his back from one of the windows, he remained turned away and never once looked over his shoulder to confirm that's what she was doing. He knew already. Both hands were shoved into his pockets and his shoulders were slumped as he stood at the end of the driveway, waiting for Violet to show up.

Violet pulled up in her Dad's car (a Prius, of course) and saw Tate at the end of the driveway. She stopped the car and rolled the window dow, grinning. "Going my way?"

Tate smirked back at Violet, before saying, "Well I kind of feel like a dirty ho bag now. Going your way might cost you fifty bucks."

He pulled on the doorhandle to get in on the passenger side, giving his mom a day-glo death glare as he got in. Once he shut the door, he rolled his eyes so they looked like they were in immediate danger of getting stuck in the permanently upright rolled position, and grumbled under his breath, "Better slam your foot down on the gas, before she comes out here and grills you with embarrassing shit that I don't want to even think about."

Because, knowing his mom and her southern tendencies, she'd start checking Violet out to see if she had good birthin' hips. Ugh.

Violet grinned, driving away as soon as the door was shut. "I'm sure there's something of my dad's in here you could sell for fifty bucks." He was cute. She hadn't noticed it before, and it hadn't been the reason she'd asked him to come, but now that he was super close to her, she could tell.

She was really, really cute too. He'd noticed her before at school, but his natural tendency had been to keep to himself. Even more so because he knew she was smart because of the classes she was in and because he thought she wouldn't give someone like him the time of day.

"Great." He actually started looking around for whatever it was that was saleable. After all, he had stolen a couple of car stereos before. Of course, it was to see if he could get away with it. So he might be joking, or he might be serious. "We can split the cash and eat somewhere that isn't a drive thru with a happy meal."

So. Maybe he was serious.

"Or we can just go wherever and I can use my dad's credit card that he gave me." Violet shrugged. "I'm all for crime and being a hooligan, but my way seems easier."

Driving toward nowhere in particular, she snapped on her iPod, humming a little as The Smiths came on.

"My kinda girl," joked Tate, and at least he stopped looking around for things to sell off. "Good music and not afraid to piss her dad off, by being a hooligan. Anywhere's good with me, too. You seem somewhere you want to stop? Go for it."

He was smiling wildly now, a gleam in his dark eyes, because she was really turning out to be a pleasant surprise in the midst of the world's usual bullshittery.

"What, lazy?" She grinned at him, turning up the music since he liked it. Once Morrissey finished crooning, She Wants Revenge came on. She flushed pink - her iPod was just on shuffle, and she didn't know a sexy song was about to come on.

"Let's see." She picked a divey taco spot that she ate at all the time in her head and steered the car toward it. He wasn't an Applebees' guy and she wasn't that sort of girl, either. "Mind if I smoke?"

Applebee's was going to be set on fire if it was forced on him. He actually did light a napkin on fire the one time his mom tried to make him sit through a meal in there. Needless to say, that meal didn't last long.

Tacos and a devil-may-care atmosphere was probably the perfect choice.

The song had him raising his eyebrows as he stared at her blushing face, and he confessed, "I like this song, lazy girl. Nice choice. And hey...smoke if you got 'em."

He even took out a zippo and flipped it open, to light her cigarette for her.

"Me too." She rifled through her purse for her pack of Camel reds, pulling out one and smiling when he lit it for her. She racked the window down so she could ash. "How come you've never said anything to me? You know, at school? I could use some people who don't suck to hang out with."

He tucked the lighter back into a pocket and leaned the seat back, tucking one hand behind his head as he watched her smoke.

"Dunno," Tate confessed, with the idle shrug of one shoulder. "You take AP classes, right? I guess I always thought you were hanging out with the other brainiacs. That and I had a friend, but he moved a little after spring break. We probably had our heads shoved up our asses when Battlefield 3 came out. I'll turn the question around now. How come you never said anything to me?"

"God, the people who freak out if they don't get a hundred on a test? Yeah, I don't really like them much. It's probably because a lot of that stuff comes easy to me." She smiled at him, liking that he admitted he played video games.

"Did you get RE6 yet? It's awful." But she gave his counterpoint the consideration it deserved. "I didn't know enough about you. People say shitty things, so I wanted to find out more for myself. I didn't know we had so much in common."

He half-scoffed, half-laughed at the people who actually freaked out about test scores like that.

"Coming from a smart ass, who knows what pornhub and redtube is? No wonder you don't get along with the geeks, I guess. And about RE6? It's all right so far, but Resident Evil kinda burned out for me, after four. Two and three were meh, but one and four were the best."

He paused for a moment, watching the smoke from her cigarette as it framed her face. There was something intensely contemplative about the way he was watching her, too.

"I didn't know that, either. It's crap that we didn't run into eachother before, but I guess a lot of that depends on what you heard about me. Someone call me pedobear or what?" he asked all of a sudden. "People say shitty things all over that school, and only some of it is true. Last week it was how that Tiffany chick gave half the varsity football team herpies. Week before it was all about that slow kid who was caught jacking off in the shitter. Congratulations, Violet. You were the flavor of this week. Whoo."

"I liked two best!" She lightly punched his arm, cigarette dangling from her mouth. She smiled, shaking her head.

"I don't really remember what people said about you. You were flavor of the week like, two months ago. You really think I can keep that shit straight? I've got trig to worry about, plus the PIN to dad's debit card. I don't want to learn something stupid and force the important stuff out." It was her way of saying she didn't care what people said about him. "But the thing about Tiffany is true, by the by, I've seen the photos. Funny what people show on their phones when they think the creepy girl isn't paying attention."

He made a comical wincey face at the punch (which didn't hurt) and the mention of Resident Evil 2. In his defense, he protested with, "What? I didn't like the way the inventory worked until four or five came out."

At the mention of people talking about him, he was actually a little curious, but made it seem like it was a casual curiosity, like he didn't care much. Mostly because he hadn't caught any word about him being in the school gossip circles at all.

"It's just math. They practically have calculators that can do trig for you now, while you sleep in class. Anyway, I missed what they said about me. I hope it wasn't that I was the one who gave Tiffany herpes, because that's bullshit. I'd rather cut my own junk off, than go through that sort of venereal aftermath torment."

"Well, yeah, but inventory systems sucked for basically every game released then." She grinned at his whiney noise, moving her hand back to the wheel, but rolled her own eyes at his calculator comment. "You know we're not allowed those in AP. The teacher checks our calculators to make sure we don't have formulas saved. And eh, people just said you're crazy. That just makes two of us."

"Well. I ditched the PC and used a RE5 mod for the 360 platform, so it was all doable with the inventory, infinite ammo, and rapid fire, too. And just so you know? It won't matter when you're out of AP classes, and it's not like I ever took any AP stuff. I'm getting a c in algebra."

And a c in everything else, because he couldn't be bothered to exert more effort. Fuck it. School sucked and he wasn't about to feed into the system, so they could put him into student loan debt. He was ready to drop out, anyway.

Now that last part was interesting, that crazy thing. That certainly explained those weird stares he kept getting for a couple of weeks and why everyone kept a wide berth, after that. It gave him a moment of pause and watchful contemplation. It also made him raise his eyebrows a little bit, again. That was only there for a split second, before he asked her, "...and do you think I'm crazy?"

"You modded - " She grinned, shaking her head. "That's badass. But infinite ammo's cheating. I don't know, I liked the first few because they were actually survival horror. Now it's just this boring over the shoulder third person shooter bullshit." She tapped her cigarette out of the window.

Her grades mattered because she was going to Harvard. "Yeah, well. The Ivy League schools won't take me if I make anything less. I'm just lucky that I don't really have to work too hard to make good grades." It was the closest she'd ever gotten to mentioning that she was smart.

Since she was driving, she couldn't really notice his facial expressions, but she heard his question. "If you're not, you won't really want to hang around me for long. So it doesn't matter." She didn't know how a sane person would react to the ladder's worth of scars on her wrists and thighs.

"It was badass. In a perfect world, even if that'll never exist? I'd never have to reload," he said, taking advantage of her driving to watch her the whole time. She was pretty fascinating, and that she'd heard rumors he was crazy and didn't seem to care was pretty interesting in and of itself.

And she was going to an Ivy League school? Damn. Another person who was going to move far away. Might as well admit some things, if she was leaving after school was over. "I was in therapy for a while. My mom made me go. I let her sink money into it and told the guy what he wanted to hear, so he said I was a normal teenager and gave me a pat on the head, and told my mom I was fine."

Because hating one's mom and most of the world at large when it's a teenager involved, isn't so totally off-base. It was the depths of the hate that he would cover up when medical professionals were around. It was very easy to lie to them, because he didn't care what they thought and didn't want to be there to begin with.

"...I don't think your normal," he said, "and that makes me want to hang out with you. So I guess I am crazy. There's no such thing as normal, anyway. Anyone who claims they are, is a fucking liar."

"Oh, who hasn't been in therapy?" She grinned at him before swinging into the taco joint's parking lot. It wasn't much more than a cart with some picnic tables outside, but it was open twenty-four-seven and it was enough to send her into gustatory bliss. "My parents sent me because I 'wasn't connecting." She made large finger quotes before parking the car and turning to face him.

After dumping her smoke out the window, she just turned to look at him, smiling. "Your mom sounds like a stupid bitch. No offense to you."

"None taken. Everyone thinks their parents suck, but some of us actually have legitimate reasons for it," he replied, eyeing her and then taking in the look of the taco joint. Seemed okay by him. He didn't need or want fancy things anyway, because that was more his mom's idea of fun, being lavished on and needing men to make her feel complete. It wasn't his. He smiled back at her. "You seem like you're connecting ok right now. I think your parents are high and no one appreciates eccentrics anymore. That's why movies and music are getting more and more bland ass, as time goes on."

Violet smiled to herself; Tate was saying everything she'd always thought. It was just perfect, and she moved a little closer, hoping he'd kiss her. "My parents don't talk to me much except through notes. They're always at work." She'd taken off her seat belt, still grinning.

He hadn't bothered to buckle up, and when she moved in closer, he thought that was enough of a go signal to sit up more and move in closer too.

"I'm not even going to ask why your parents are so busy," he said, and there wasn't much chance for a reply. That was because his lips met hers and he didn't show any signs of stopping. It was one of those unexpectedly perfect moments. One of his hands raised up to the side of her face, and his fingertips brushed some of her hair away from her cheek. There was no trouble connecting like this, at least.

She would've told him 'work', but he did what she'd been hoping he'd do the whole time and kissed her. She really didn't understand why girls at school thought he was a freak. Probably just because he was quiet and smart. Smart people were always ostracized. Just like her.

He was a good kisser, and she moved a little closer. Her experience wasn't as much as some of the other girls at her school - she was still a virgin, but she'd kissed someone before - and she hoped she wasn't disappointing him. "All Apologies" came on her iPod and she wondered if the moment could get more perfect.

He didn't understand why anyone thought she was a freak, either. She was smart and cool, and honest and real. But if you didn't fall into a pack mentality, it tended to result in mass rejection for not fitting in like everyone else. Or, at least, that's what he usually thought. He couldn't think much, not while they were liplocked. And it wasn't like he had spent a ton of time making out with a lot of girls either, so his experience was pretty limited.

Her, kissing, and Nirvana? No, it couldn't get any more perfect. It felt like it was preordained. Sure, it was sudden, but it was like nothing else felt as right as this did, in his entire messed up life.

He slowly shifted around, trying to move her more toward him and to guide her out of the driver's seat and more toward the passenger side of the car. Come over to the dark side.

Violet didn't believe in fate. Or she hadn't thought she did, not until she kissed Tate Langdon. And it was even the acoustic version, the more romantic version of the song. He knew just enough pressure to use, and if she was completely honest with herself, she felt safe with him. Protected.

She could tell what he wanted, and grinning, she obliged him. It only took a tiny bit of doing, but she was petite and slender, and soon she was in his lap. Fortunately it was dark out and there weren't too many people around to ogle. "Are you real?" She couldn't help but pull away for a moment, wanting to see if he felt the same way as she did. They both hated their parents. They liked the same music, they hated their school - was she just dreaming?
