As he watched citizens scattering in all directions before the otherworldly monsters, Finn wondered if he should have donned his Stormtrooper armor after all. Of all the things he’d thrown on they were the newer set of clothes he’d received from the dreams plus a bullet proof vest and his Stormtrooper blaster (aside from his police service weapon) and even now he felt exposed. Watching as the creatures tore through vehicles and trashed properties like they were nothing wasn’t helping.
“Come on! Move! Go, go! Get clear!” he yelled at people running from a cafe. The same cafe he and Rey had been at for breakfast before he started his shift; before these things had shown up and started literally tearing people apart. He wasn’t sure where his partner, Erin, was but he’d left a text and a voicemail just to let her know things had gone sideways fast. He hoped she was okay.
He fired his blaster at one of the creatures as it towered over a woman who’d stumbled and fallen. She was screaming in terror. “Get away from her!” he hollered. The creature barely flinched and instead looked at him and started approaching. Finn fired repeatedly and it was like firing into a void - it did absolutely nothing. “REY!” His voice rose in alarm. “I GOT A PROBLEM OVER HERE!”
Rey had been planning on showing Finn something from her dreams (Several somethings as she was pretty sure she’d found enough pieces of the Falcon to put it together), when all hell had broken loose.
She quickly lost track of him in the chaos, flinging eating utensils at any of the creatures she could see as she tried to ferry people to safety. One of the monsters nearly took her arm off and she pulled something out of her pocket.
The lightsaber hummed to life, casting her face in a blue glow just before she lunged forward and clumsily sliced the thing in half.
Rey let out a triumphant shout, only for another one of the creatures to spear her from behind. Numbly, Rey tried to pull away, turning to slash at it, but it tore her arm off. The limb fell to the ground, still gripping the lightsaber as she was carried away screaming.
Finn was running - running like hell away from the thing going after him and towards Rey's screams. He saw the arm on the ground, the lightsaber still in its grasp and he felt a cold wave of horror sweep over him. Rey had been seriously hurt. She could be bleeding out as she was carried away. He had to get to her now. Adrenaline coursing through him, Finn snatched the weapon from the lifeless limb without losing a beat and ignited it. The grip was familiar after dreaming about wielding it against Kylo Ren. Spinning around, arm outstretched in a deadly arc, Finn sliced the head off of his pursuer and picked up running after his friend. "REYYYY!" He yelled after her. His lungs were burning as he willed himself to run faster, seeing her a hundred yards away being carried off by one of the monsters. "REY I'M COMING! HOLD ON!"
Poe still didn’t know exactly what to think of this entire situation, but he was at least glad that his Naval career had prepared him for things like this. At least he had thought he’d be prepared, but once he was out there in the fray he quickly realized just how out of his element he really was. If nothing else, he was definitely getting good use out of his blaster, even if it didn’t do too much against the Paradooms. His plan of course was to eventually get to the junk yard where Black One was so that he could try that against the things, but for the moment he and BB-8 were with Finn and Rey.
Poe had been separated from his friends, helping a small group of people find a place to hide when he heard Finn screaming Rey’s name and once he made sure the group was alright, he ran back towards the place he’d left his friends, BB-8 rolling after him, “Finn! Rey!”
Rey hurt. It was a pain she couldn't quite describe except it felt like her mind was being twisted around a spindle and then forced through a very tiny hole. And when she regained herself again, her actions were not her own. She was returned to the battlefield, her arm and part of her face replaced by shining metal and her new metal arm didn't end in a hand. Instead it was a crude mockery of her lightsaber, crackling unstable and the color of fresh blood.
Crush, kill, destroy. Those were the orders and the commands and try as she might she couldn't fight them. Rey dropped out of the sky, landing between Finn and Poe.
Finn had lost track of Rey in the chaos - she’d been swallowed up by legions of paradooms and civilians going in all directions. But he’d found Poe at least. Fighting off the monsters with the lightsaber and continuing to try to save lives while looking for a way to get out of the fray had been the order of business for what felt like forever - checking the time wasn’t exactly a priority.
“Poe, we gotta get out of here. I don’t know how much more good we’re gonna do. We’re gonna be overrun!” Finn shouted to his friend. It was a shame Black One didn’t have room for two, like a regular jet fighter. He’d just have to get clear of this mess and try to find Erin instead.
Something landed hard behind Finn suddenly and he whirled around in surprise, expecting another monster. And in a way it was one. Eyes wide, sick to his stomach, Finn recognized a cobbled together version of Rey - she reminded him of the Borg from Star Trek (there goes a few episodes he’ll never be able to watch again after this) - half human, half robot. And she didn’t recognize him.
“Oh god, Poe! It’s...it’s...Rey!” He didn’t want to fight her, even as he stood at the ready with the lightsaber, there was no way in hell he could do this.
Poe had just reached Finn when the thing that used to be Rey landed behind him, dark brown eyes wide as he stared past Finn at her, “Fuck...what happened to her?” He asked, blaster raised, despite the shock he felt at seeing his friend. He may have been extremely shocked at seeing Rey, but it didn’t stop him from remembering his years of Navy training, which told him to think of the threat first and right now the obvious threat was Rey. “No one informed me that this could happen.”
Rey's hand flickered to life with the tell-tale sound of a lightsaber igniting. The beam shook and buzzed, unstable and red. The side of her face that was now cybernetic possessed an eye that zoomed in on her former friends. Letting out a blood-curdling sith-like scream, she charged forward, raising the lightsaber high. And somewhere, deep within, the only thing she could feel was anguish.
“Clearly we didn’t get the memo,” Finn growled. He was grieved and angry, his facial features momentarily coming together into a scowl. It was really starting to piss him off how this place sprang insane surprises on them that caused mayhem and destruction. He hated how he couldn’t save Rey from these monsters and now...now she was joining them in this attack. When the lightsaber hand ignited, he raised the humming blue lightsaber in response - her lightsaber by rights - but took a step back. “Rey...don’t this! Don’t make me fight you!” He swung the blade back and forth in warning. “You gotta be inside there somewhere!” He looked over at Poe with worry in his eyes. What if they had to do the unimaginable?
“What do we do??”
While there was a strong part of Poe that was telling him to continue fighting, his survival instincts were setting in and those were stronger, “We get the hell out of here.” There wasn’t anything they could do for Rey right now and chances were if they stayed where they were they’d either end up dead or like Rey. And while he honestly didn’t think the OC would allow anyone to remain dead or whatever had happened to Rey, he really didn’t want to stick around and let it happen to him to find out, “There’s nothing we can do for her right now.” He said, reaching out to grab Finn’s arm, being careful to avoid the lightsaber as BB8 beeped in agreement.
Rey’s expression was remorseless as she started to advance towards her friends. Any remorse, any guilt she felt was not evident on her face, though there was a haunted sort of shadow in her real eye. If she could beg them, she would beg them to run; even if they defeated her there were dozens like her, and thousands more of the other demons and creatures that were tearing the count apart.
She brandished her twisted lightsaber again, the only warning she’d be able to give before attacking.
Finn felt sick to his stomach that he had lost Rey so quickly only for her to be resurrected into this...thing. And his heart ached that they had to abandon her. She was his friend, and that pull between them in the dreams was just as strong here he was realizing.
But Poe was right. If they stayed, they’d get overrun and die and that was the last thing not-cyborg-zombie Rey would want for them.
Finn let himself get pulled by the arm by Poe and he made a mad dash with BB-8 right by their side.
“I’m sorry!” he called over his shoulder, tears stinging his eyes. “I’m so sorry Rey.” If there was anything they could do to save her, it was going to have to be somewhere safe - if there was anyplace safe. He’d seen enough in the county to know that things always reset themselves after a couple of days, with a coverup, but people dying? Being turned into things? That he wasn’t sure would reset. He could only hope.
