To say Raven was initially unamused when she came out of her portal would be an understatement. She couldn’t feel her mental link with Dick which was just weird and unsettling. Then there was the fact her glamour seemed to be on the fritz and not working which was just...annoying. And she was decidedly not in Orange County. All this after finally getting over the after effects of being drugged in her dreams.
“You have got to be kidding me…”
If this was an Orange County thing for Halloween, she was not a fan. Couldn’t even count on not doing costumes to avoid the weirdness.
It was only as she was walking through the cemetery she’d landed in that she began to get an idea on just where she was. The curling hill, the moon…
So maybe this wasn’t as terrible as it could be. Or she was dreaming. But something told her that she was very much awake.
“Well played, Orange County. Well played.” Not that there was anyone to hear her.
Kate’s first reaction had been a bit of disbelief and a little bit of ‘really’ once she’d realized where she was. That feeling had only gotten worse as she quickly found herself to be intangible, her powers on the fritz.
It was like she was a ghost.
Trying to calm herself down, she heard a familiar voice and floated over. Oh. Oh she thought there weren't too many better people to find here, but when she opened her mouth no words would come. So she moved into Raven’s field of view and waved her hands. Unsure if she knew ASL, she tried anyway, Hello, can you understand me?
Then she tapped her ear and gave a thumbs up to indicate she could still hear.
Or apparently there was someone who could hear her. Raven had been trying to get a sense of when exactly she was in Halloweentown, if it was just going to be a random trip to the place or if she was going to be taking part of the events of the movie (important to know these things after all) when suddenly she saw Kate and blinked in shock.
Okay, it made sense that she wouldn’t be the only one there. Especially if it were an Orange County thing. The fact that it seemed she was like a ghost was...interesting. But Raven’s skin was blue/grey with the chakra on her forehead visible thanks to not having her glamour in place because of...whatever was going on.
“Yeah, I can understand you.”
Thank goodness for things crossing over from the Dreams. Yes, things with Joey were complicated, but she’d formed an affinity with him, which had led to her learning sign language so they could communicate. A skill that was going to be useful here.
“I can try to do a healing to see if that helps you but I’m not sure it’s going to work.” The rules were always different in situations like this.
It can’t hurt, Kate signed. I don’t appreciate being a ghost, this is kind of one of my nightmares.
There were worse places they could be, but the situation kind of took the fun out of it, Have you seen anyone else?
In the end, that really was all they could do. Try. So Raven gave a small nod and focused her Soul Self to see if it would actually do any good in healing Kate or not given she wasn’t entirely positive about it working or not. Stranger things had happened so it could.
As for the question? The empath closed her eyes and reached out.
“I haven’t seen anyone. But it does feel like there’s a handful of us from Orange County. No one else I actually know though.” Some were further away, as if in Christmastown most likely. But there was a distinct energy shift between the denizens of this world and those from their own.
The effort to heal Kate did little more than make it feel as though her molecules were being pulled apart by tiny little clawed hands. Unfortunately, she had no vocal chords and could not scream.
She shuddered, doubling over until the healing pain was through.
So that wasn’t going to be a thing. Okay, maybe we just need to try to find some of them.
Noticing the pain Kate was in, Raven quickly stopped. She understood that things were different but she still hated that she had hurt someone while she was trying to help them. But she pushed the doubts and concerns away. She had to accept that there was only so much she could do and have faith that once they were back in Orange County that Kate would be okay.
So instead she nodded.
“That works.”
Closing her eyes, she focused until she found a direction for them to begin moving in that seemed to have a higher concentration of energy that was from Orange County and not those from this world.
It wasn’t like she blamed Raven or anything, so Kate just nodded at her, and watched as she focused. Magic was always an interesting thing to Kate. In her teen years she’d had an overactive imagination but it wasn’t helped by knowing people who could literally control magic. Sorcerers and witches and everything in between.
The world of her dreams was as much magic as science. Sometimes it drove her batty. Sometimes she really wanted to submit Jemma to it and watch with popcorn, but she wasn’t that mean.
When do you think we are? Kate asked, once Raven’s eyes were open, Plot wise.
Kate may not blame her, but Raven would always feel guilt over not being able to help someone or making things worse for them. It was her nature. With so much she felt she had to make up for (especially after the Darkseid situation even if she had healed everyone and the land and undone all the damage) that any accidental making things worse was just… well, it was Raven.
And putting Jemma in a world where there was magic was definitely mean. She was fairly certain the biochemist was mostly accepting of it. She had to be with everything they dealt with. But she was still a scientist based in facts and tests and magic? Magic was a thing she could acknowledge while still being very much a fan of sticking to science.
She’d probably enjoy Jack’s lab actually.
Having been about to start heading towards where it seemed people were, Raven paused and closed her eyes, her soul self materializing above her shaped much like a raven and flying away to get information. Once it was back?
“It seems early. Jack’s still missing and the mayor is worrying about next Halloween.”
Kate would feel guilty in her shoes too, but there was nothing that could be done about that. She nodded, trying to remember the rest of the movie. It seemed like they were probably in time for Jack's attempt to get everyone to celebrate Christmas.
Which was going to be obnoxious but she was used to it. She signed, Should we hide out? Interfere in this timeline?
The second it turned to November, it was Christmas everywhere. Sometimes even before then. It was annoying at best. So while it would be amusing to try and interfere with the timeline, to maybe prevent the Christmas fiasco and avoid all of that….
“Something tells me we won’t be able to, it’s set in stone just like the Dreams,” No matter how often they watched and wished they could change things, “Besides, you know the movie. Trying to interfere or change the course of things doesn’t exactly work out well.”
It was bad enough in the dreams, to watch and relive it and be unable to change things even when, as an outside observer, it was pretty obvious where they were going.
After all, Kate had seen her death coming, even if she hadn’t really let herself actually process it. Besides, she’d probably come back.
But that was something she was going to ignore.
You have a point. I’m just glad we’re not in Final Destination. Kate looked around, then shrugged and turned back to Raven, We should at least try to enjoy it. Take the part of some of the towns people.
“There are definitely worse movies we could have ended up in.” That much was certain. So Nightmare Before Christmas? Not the worst place to be and they at least knew the way it would end up going so it was easy enough to go along with the flow. “I mean, we do fit in.” Kate being a ghost for lack of a better word, Raven not having her glamour in place. So why not enjoy it?
