Who: Mabel Pines [narrative] What: Planning for Halloween When: 29 Oct, morning Where: Her apartment Rating: PG
Mabel Pines was a lot of things, imaginative, daring, boisterous, loud, outgoing and - if she did say so herself - the best fun to be around ever. But she was struggling a little in Orange County. Despite it being fate that she and her brother were here (since they’d both come to the conclusion this was the place to go independently of each other), Mabel just struggled to fit in. She hadn’t met many people, yet, and her chances of getting to know new people seemed to dwindle as time went on. She wasn’t an old hag, far from it, but she felt that maybe if she was younger she’d have more chance of getting to know people? God, she sounded like Mason, she thought. Worrying about how people perceived her, worrying that no one would like her, worrying that she was going to die alone with only her bro-bro for company... Not that there was anything wrong with Dip- Mason. It was them against the world most of the time and it wasn’t like he was out there, Lothario-ing it up and bringing girls home all the time (which, rude by the way because her brother was amazing and all the girls should have been hanging off his arm and his every word and letting him know how amazing and handsome and perfect boyfriend material he was), but out of the two of them, Mabel had always been the more outgoing of the two and that had... sort of not worked for her so far.
She’d wanted to try planning a Halloween party with the person she’d met on the network but - and maybe she was imagining it - they hadn’t seemed all that receptive to the idea. She thought about planning a party at her and Mason’s place but if there were others by more popular people then maybe no one would come to theirs and there was literally nothing sadder than two people sitting at home in costume while no one turns up to their party.
She hadn’t seen much on the network that would indicate there were loads of parties happening, but she hadn’t been paying too much attention to it if she was honest. She’d have to try again. She also needed to plan their halloween costumes. Though they didn’t go trick or treating anymore - and hadn’t since they were thirteen - Halloween was a special holiday for the two of them and their costumes were an important part of that. At least, if she got a theme, she could busy herself with making the best costumes ever for her and Dipper and then maybe people would be so enamoured by them that they would strike up conversation and then the two of them would make more friends. That was how friendship worked, right?
She turned her laptop on, intending on having kitten videos up on one half of the screen - because kittens always cheered everyone up - and then a google search for Halloween costumes on the other half but realised she hadn’t had anything to eat yet. It was only half ten, which was a lot better than sometimes when she looked at the time and it was three pm and she’d just been watching videos of cute baby animals all day, so hauled herself up to go and find some left over Mabel juice from the night before. When there, she saw most of the ingredients for cake.
Well.
She was sad, and she was sure that Dipper was sad too. Cakes cheered everyone up.
And, maybe, if she made enough, she could offer them to whoever’s party they ended up going to and then they’d be best friends and the world would be, finally, put to rights.
What a great plan, Mabel, she thought as she grabbed her apron and tied her hair back, you’re a genius.
