The thing they never really told you when you enlisted was that once you'd signed your name on that dotted line that civilian life would be as foreign and alien to you as the strange new places you were sent to as part of deployment. Also beds being too soft, that was another thing, something Davin was struggling with. It was one of the many reasons he frequently found himself up either really early or really late, running, music in his ears and muscles all but screaming for relief as he pushed himself to the absolute brink of physical fitness.
The head doctor at the clinic had recommended some medication but Davin being Davin was ignoring that advice and dealing with things his own way. Badly, Johnny would say, but Johnny was busy with other things so Davin pushed his mental voice to one side to focus on not losing his stomach contents as he was at that point where he was either going to collapse or throw up.
Eventually his run came to a stop and Davin bent over to heave in giant lungfuls of much needed air, hands firmly clasped around his knees as a single bead of sweat rolled down the length of his nose and dripped off the tip to splatter on the sand beneath his feet. He flicked his tongue over his lower lip before he just huffed out a breath and dropped his ass into the sand and reached for the edges of his sweat soaked t-shirt, tugging it off and slinging it to one side.
Better, much better.
Lena had been out in the surf for what felt like hours. The sun had gone down and the bright light of the full moon was making the water glow like someone had scattered diamonds on it. Though it was starting to get pretty dark and the lights from the street were only barely filtering down to the beach so as she came out of the surf and hooked her board under her arm, she didn't see the man running and stopping, sinking to a halt in the sand. In fact, she didn't see him until she'd walked three quarters of the way to him, stabbed her board into the sand and started stripping out of her wetsuit, peeling it off her upper body to reveal her dark green bikini top - not that it was really possible to truly determine colour in the moonlight.
When her eyes fell on him, she had a split second moment of defensive confusion before she remembered that she wasn't the only dysfunctional idiot that lived here and why wouldn't someone else want to run around and exercise in the dark when the rest of humanity were doing other things?
She tilted her head, raising her voice though she was sure he'd spotted her. "You know there's a bench about a hundred yards to your right."
Davin would have definitely have needed to be deaf, blind and some sort of stupid not to notice the beautiful woman walking out of the surf who began to strip out of her wetsuit though he did look away at that point because he might have been raised by wolves but he still knew right from wrong.
"Is there?" He tossed back with a distinct drawl. "I hadn't noticed that."
"Yes," Lena replied with an arched eyebrow, pulling her hair out of the tie and most definitely not using the move as an excuse to look at the man sat on the sand in his sweaty, muscled glory (bloody hell she needed to get laid and soon). Rubbing her hand through the waves that fell around her face now they were loosed from the ponytail she'd had them in, her lips pulled up into an amused, teasing smirk. "Couldn't make it that far?"
"What can I say my legs just wouldn't do it," Davin replied with an equally amused, teasing smirk. "Something to do with the fact I've been running for the last four hours I think." He scrubbed a hand through his still quite short but slowly growing back hair before a hand was offered. "I'm Davin."
Lena moved closer when he held out his hand and she took it in hers, shaking firmly. "Lena," she told him, "but most people call me Dutch." She tipped her head to the side, eyebrows lifting and her smirk not disappearing. "Four hours, huh? That's a lot of running. Doesn't that get boring after a while?"
Davin released his grip after a moment. "Dutch it is then." He rolled his shoulders and smirked. "Beats lying in a bed not sleeping." That was definitely a thing that had been happening ever since he'd gotten back to the states. He reached across to his side and switched his player off while tugging the earbuds out of his ears.
She wrinkled her nose, "Insomnia, huh?" She shook her head, "That sucks. That's partly why I surf, good exercise and you're fucking knackered by the end of it but also it's a good way of clearing your mind of shit that's haunting you."
Tucking her hair behind her ear, Lena folded her arms across her chest, hip popped. "You ever thought about hitting up the surf?"
Davin tipped his head in the direction of the ocean and shook his head. "Never, but with a description like that it sounds like it might be worth some serious consideration." Might be more fun than running as well and it would be learning a new skill, not something to shy away from.
Tipping her head and smiling the smile of someone who felt like they might have won something, Lena lifted a shoulder. "I've been told that I'm a pretty good teacher." Also a drill sergeant, and an arsehole and various other names that weren't all that pleasant but she took surfing seriously. "If you wanted to learn."
An eyebrow lifted as Davin rocked back and stretched his arms out over the top of his knees as he tipped his head to look up at Dutch. "Is that right?" He definitely would be an idiot if he turned down that sort of offer from a beautiful woman who clearly knew what she was doing. "Alright, count me in."
He was still a soldier so hard work and being able to pick things up quickly tended to come naturally to him.
"Great, what's your schedule like?" Lena asked, hip cocked to the side slightly as she looked down at Davin with a smile quirking her lips up in the corner. "Because we'll definitely need to do it when the sun's up. I promise when we're done you'll be exhausted anyway." If there was a slight tone of suggestiveness in her comment then so be it. She did enjoy a beautiful man, after all.
Davin chuckled at the suggestiveness in Dutch's voice and smiled in return, he definitely wasn't complaining. Quite the opposite in fact. "Well, for you? I think I can pretty much clear it." He shifted to rise to his full height and smirked as he rested his top over his bare shoulder, arms folding across his chest. "So, whenever you're free I'm willing and able."
Lena watched as Davin unfolded himself, getting to his feet and his full - impressive - height. She had a moment of imaging her legs around his waist as he pushed her against a wall and the dizzying vertigo that would follow before she cleared her throat and nodded. "You got a cell phone on you?" she asked, "Mine's..." she waved her hand, "not really easy to get hold of right now. Are weekends better for you, generally?"
Davin smirked a little as he felt the heat of Dutch's gaze before he reached into a pocket and pulled out his cell that he then offered up, screen unlocked. "Weekends generally tend to be better but depending on what I have going on during the week I can make arrangements." Shift his appointments around and talk to Johnny about plans if needed.
Things were definitely looking up.
"I work in literal hell, so immediately after my shift or weekends definitely work better for me." Stepping closer, Lena took the phone and didn't move out of his space - having gotten unnecessarily close she could just smirk up at him - as she tapped her number in and spun his phone back around.
Once he'd taken it, she patted him on the chest, stepping backwards out of his space and backing up towards where she'd dug her board into the sand. "Now you've got my number, you'd better make good use of it."
Davin took the phone back with a smirk and gave an answering nod. "Oh, I will. Promise." He watched her for a long moment before he turned on his heel and headed off.
