The little kid was cute. Really freaking cute. And apparently came with a million accessories, because Peter felt he had collected a pile of random hair elastics, half-eaten snacks, and socks throughout the house as he cleaned. Since he wasn’t diligent with that kind of clean-up, it had taken a while for him to accumulate what he was sure was everything.
And then forgot about it for a while. It wasn’t until he found himself playing with a small butterfly clip that he realized he should probably return the items. Mentioning it to Yondu wasn’t any help, and Peter, slightly annoyed at being brushed-off by the old man, decided to do whatever he wanted, which in this case was inviting Laurel to come over, dig around and make sure there was nothing else here, and let Olivia run around the backyard for a while.
Oh -- and food would be involved.
He didn’t clear it with Yondu, because why would he? Yondu had been annoyed about the whole Katherine thing (although in Peter’s defence, what else do you do with a hot brunette you’re stuck with for an entire weekend? Sex. Obviously.) and had reiterated that Peter wasn’t supposed to bring home any girls. It didn’t matter that Peter tried to explain magical portals didn’t count as bringing someone home, it was still a no. Whatever. What Yondu HADN’T said though, was that Peter wasn’t allowed to bring people over to eat. People gotta eat, and Peter liked to BBQ as any red-blooded male did.
So. There they were, doing exactly what Peter had envisioned: food cooking, Olivia running around, and Laurel in the backyard, with Olivia’s things carefully put aside in a bag. “This is nice,” Peter said, prepping the barbeque. “Thanks for coming over. It’s a little bit easier when you’re not stuck on some bungee cord, hey?”
“Thanks for inviting us,” Laurel replied back with ease as she watch Olivia run, she chuckled shaking her head, “She had been asking when she would see her new friends again, especially the dog.” It was odd on how she met the two men, but honestly it turned out rather nice.
Sure Yondu was blue and hid it, which was strange and Peter seemed like a man who decided to never settle down, but they open their house and lives to Laurel and Olivia, which anyone who is kind to her child, is good in her book. “Are you sure Yondu won’t mind?” she did learn how he liked his privacy and she didn’t want to be a burden if he had a long day. Olivia can be a bit much on long days, she knew this, the energy was nonstop.
“Um.” That question threw Peter off-guard. Yondu would probably be mad, but he had a good game-face. The yelling and all out bans of anyone would happen later on, after Laurel and Olivia left. Peter was naturally more gregarious than Yondu and it got boring staring at the old man all the time.
“You leave Yondu to me,” Peter finally answered with a smirk. “I mentioned it. Vaguely. Or something,” he confessed, laughing a little. “I find it better to ask for forgiveness instead of permission when it comes to the old man. Otherwise, nothing would ever happen.” He pointed to Kraglin and Olivia in the yard with the spatula and gave an approving nod. “And come on -- who wouldn’t want a kid running around that at the end of the day goes back to her loving mother? I mean, it’s not like we’re keeping her or anything.”
Laurel found herself laughing, she couldn’t help it, “is that the plan, sugar her up and then send her home with mama?” she shook her head, “remind me to never ask you to babysit,” she joked, she looked at Peter still chuckling, “Yondu does care,” she told him, “one of the benefits of being tethered together, we got to learn a lot about each other.”
“And,” she looked back to her daughter, “she has decided she wants a dog,” she shook her head, that wasn’t going to happen, “but I don’t have time for a dog and a toddler.”
“I never thought I’d like having a dog around.” He opened up the burger box and started to place the patties down, nodding approvingly at the sizzle. “He’s grown on me, hey, Kraglin!” The dog’s ears perked up at his name, and he came plodding over to Peter for a well-deserved ear scratch before running off again into the yard. “Once upon a time, I would have totally laughed at this idea of suburban boring life, but it’s got its pros.” And cons. It really was oddly boring but he was trying to make the best of it. After all, he wasn’t getting into trouble again -- he’d learned his lesson.
The burgers now cooking, Peter took his drink and sat down next to Laurel, long legs stretched out in front of him. “Domestic life for the win?”
“Not sure for the win,” Laurel told him, “but” her eyes drifted over to her daughter, giggling as she ran the yard, “Some parts of it are truly worth it.” Her chuckled as she pushed her hair out of her face, “nothing like how i had planned it, but when does anything go as planned.”
“Peter! You barbecuin’ back here? Who's car is that out front?” Yondu's raspy voice hollered from seemingly nowhere, a hint of irritation in it. A moment later he emerged from the side of the house, ready to tear into him, “I thought I said-” when he caught sight of Laurel he stopped short. Immediately his expression and demeanor changed to shock then something resembling sheepishness. “Oh, hey Laurel.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Uh, Peter didn't mention nothin’ of you droppin’ by.” His eyes slid over to him with a flash of reprimand before it was gone, replaced with the usual charm he held for people whose company he liked. “I was just comin’ from work. If I'd known you were comin’ I woulda been here sooner an’ cleaned up a bit. How's Olivia doin’?”
Softly since she was standing by Peter she jokingly sung “You’re in trouble,” when she heard Yondu call for Peter, but she laughed lightly as he stepped out and she nodded her head to Yondu, “Hey, don’t worry about it,” she wave her hand dismissively, “we,” she was taking part of the blame, “thought be nice a nice surprise to have dinner together. Olivia is fine,” she nodded her daughter running around.
“Livia, come say hi to Mr. Yondu,” she called out and suddenly a little blonde girl came running over to the older man and wrapped herself around his leg, “Yon!!!” she proclaim with a big smile.
Peter grinned widely, like the cat who ate the proverbial cream. There was no way that Yondu could say anything now. At least not in public. He’d get a good smack across the head later for this but whatever. It was worth it to see a small blonde tornado clinging to Yondu. “Yeah, Yon. Isn’t this a nice surprise? Laurel and Olivia, here to visit and not stuck to anyone! Isn’t that great? Have a seat, take a load off, relax.”
He motioned to the cooler. “Pop? There’s children present.”
A barely perceptible growl was stuck in Yondu's throat as he looked at Peter's smarmy grin. This was definitely all Peter's idea, Laurel would have called ahead. He'd deal with him later.
Meanwhile he had a toddler clinging to his leg and a dog now dancing around him, tail wagging excitedly. He felt his face flush a little in embarrassment that Olivia even liked him; between the dreams and this life Yondu had never bothered having kids and his experience of a family had always been one of a highly dysfunctional one.
“Um, hey there Tater Tot.” He managed to say, mumbling it because if Peter heard it he'd never hear the end of it. It was a pet name he'd come up with back when they'd all been tethered.
After a moment he looked up helplessly at Laurel; he didn't know what to do.
“Livia,” Laurel said, “give him a moment, he just got in,” she waved for her daughter to go play and she did, she took off running, calling the dog after her. Laurel smiled as she stepped forward, “surprise,” she added in a joyful voice, “Peter suggested a get together and I agreed, I didn’t think to call you to check, apologizes.”
Turning back to Peter, “Is it almost ready, I’ll take the rugrat in to wash up before dinner.”
Peter nodded and waved at Olivia as they walked into the house, only to turn back to Yondu. It was hard not to stick his tongue out or feel like he got something over the old man ...which he did, but that’s okay. Yondu 0, Peter 342832. That was the score now anyways. Give or take a few thousand.
“You should probably wash up since I can smell you from here. Can’t you see we have company?” It didn’t matter that Yondu had literally said the same thing when he entered -- Peter was giving him a gentle, loving reminder. That’s all. It wasn’t Peter’s fault that this usual shit-eating grin was crossing his face. “I even laid out an outfit for you. You’re welcome, by the way. You dress like a hobo, so I had to help you out.”
Yondu worked his jaw and stepped closer to Peter, eyes blazing. “You pull somethin’ like this again without checkin’ with me first,” he growled, pointing a finger at him, “an’ the next barbecue you’re cookin’ will be in the company of hobos.” He then stalked past him and up the porch steps, making haste to get to his room. It was only there where he did a sniff check to see if he really did smell. It wasn’t exactly roses, so he hopped in his bathroom to take a quick shower. By the time he reappeared onto the deck, everyone was starting to eat and Kraglin was sitting near Olivia, giving her puppy dog eyes for scraps.
Of course Olivia was giving them to him, even if Laurel was protesting, but he needed to eat as well was all Olivia would inform her mom. Laurel looked over to Yondu, “I’m sorry,” she said as she kept trying to block Olivia from feeding the dog. “Livia,” she breathed, “you want to go in time out?” she asked her, the little girls eyes widen and shook her head no, “than stop feeding the dog and eat.” The young girl sat up straighter, than stage whispered to Kraglin, “I’ll save you some!” Laurel laughed, just shook her head at her child and moved her attention back to the two males, “Peter this is delicious and how was work, Yondu?”
Yondu couldn't help but chuckle at the little girl trying to be sneaky about giving Kraglin bits of burger and bread. He was going to tell Laurel is was a right but he saw her lean in with a parental whisper and knew he couldn't interfere. But when Olivia made it obvious she'd save Kraglin some food regardless he laughed too. “Can't blame her. Look at them eyes.” Kraglin was part pit bull and had the expressive eyes of one. Ruffling the dog's head he served himself from the plate of finished burgers. “Work was all right. Got paid, can't complain.” He didn't want to go into details in front of the kid. After adding all the necessaries to his burger he took a big bite and said around it, “Not bad,” to Peter.
“Thanks.” Peter was pleased this had worked out, even if he was going to get it later. He hadn’t realized how badly he’d missed socializing until he was out and able to do it. A friendly guy, he had always surrounded himself with people and now? It was just him and Yondu.
Which was fine, really but he liked having people over too.
“Just glad we could all have some chill time, not stuck to each other with fake rubber bands.” He lifted up his drink and smiled. “I’m glad we got some friends out of it though.”
