When: Today
Where: Church
Rating/Warning: Low

It had over a week of not hearing from Tyler. At first she had just let him be. He made his choice. Caroline had every intention of respecting that. She had to. It was the only way she could move on. But then his father had died and all Caroline wanted was to be there for him. She had to be.
It didn’t matter that he could never put her first, that he chose Klaus over her, that he had broken her heart. She hated the thought of him in pain no matter how much he had put her through. And there was also the fact that he had been there for her more than anyone when her mom died. She wanted needed to return the favor.
Caroline had reached out to Tyler multiple times, even shown up at his apartment, since she heard about his father’s death. But he wouldn’t let her in. Wouldn’t answer her calls or her texts. It hurt. A lot. But Caroline was still determined to be there for him.
She showed up to the funeral. She tried to talk to Tyler before hand but got no response. Instead she ended up talking to his mother for a few minutes, consoling Mrs. Lockwood as best she could.
She sat a few rows back from Tyler during the service, but Caroline kept her eyes on him the entire time. She could see how upset he was, even if it came off more as anger. Caroline knew the relationship Tyler had with his father was strained. With both his parents. But she also knew he was hurting and again all she wanted was to be there for him. After the service was over Caroline couldn’t take it anymore. She had to talk to him.
Caroline waited until there weren’t many people around. Slowly she made her way over to him.
“Tyler,” she said softly reaching out for his hand. Caroline was a little surprised when he let her take it. But even with his hand in hers, he still didn’t say anything. He didn’t even look at her.
“Tyler,” she said again. “Let me be here for you. Please,” she pleaded. “I know we’re done. I get it. But please just let me be here.”
Still no response. Tears stung her own eyes, but she didn’t let them fall. This was about Tyler. About his grief. It didn’t matter how much he was killing her.
“I don’t care that you can never put me first.” Words she told him when he had dumped her. “I’m putting you first.”
Still nothing. With her other hand Caroline reached out placing her hand on his face, turning it so he was finally looking at her. “I care about you Tyler. I care. And that’s never going to go away. I’m here. I love you and I always will.”
Tyler didn’t know what to say to Caroline. Hell, he didn’t know what to say to just about anyone. He was hurting, of course. He knew that he and his father would never have anything like a normal father-son relationship. Richard had spent the entirety of Tyler’s youth berating him, beating him, and telling him, if not directly than indirectly, that he wasn’t good enough for the Lockwood name. But any chance of reconciliation was gone now. Long gone.
His father wasn’t the only one who Tyler wanted to reconcile with, but doing so with Caroline was just as impossible as it was with his dad. With Klaus’s order in the air, he couldn’t talk to her. Couldn’t even see her. Still, he felt some measure of comfort when she’d taken his hand. But when she turned his face to see her, well, he couldn’t take it anymore. He pulled himself from her touch, rougher than was necessary, and then turned and walked out of the church.
Once again Caroline watched the man she loved walk away. Her heart ached to go after him. But she didn’t follow. She stood there watching, wiping the few tears that slid down her cheeks. When she was certain he was gone Caroline took a deep breath and headed home.
