Simon still couldn’t quite believe that his mother and Rebecca were in California. When his mother had mentioned coming out to visit him for the holidays, he had thought for sure that it would fall through since it was such late notice, but somehow her and Rebecca had found tickets that weren’t too expensive and now here they were, sitting across from him and Izzy. He had known that having his mother and sister around was going to be somewhat difficult, what with him being a vampire and them not knowing, but he hadn’t thought he was going to have to start figuring out how to dodge questions so soon. He should have assumed that they were going to be hungry after their flight.
“I still find it so funny that you’re both originally from New York City, but didn’t end up meeting until you both moved out here,” Rebecca said, smiling at the both of them as she also looked over her menu.
Simon shrugged, “I mean, the City is a big place. It’s not too crazy.” Although Simon would be lying if he said that he’d never thought the same thing considering how easily they had met in the dreams. Then again, meeting in the dreams had everything to do with Clary.
Izzy wouldn’t admit to being nervous that Simon’s family were here but she was. It meant a lot to her that she made the best impression she could, and supported Simon as much as possible especially since she knew he was worried about his vampirism.
“I’m just lucky that fate seemed determined to eventually have us meet, even if it wasn’t in New York” Izzy said with a smile, “I can’t wait to show you around. You’re going to love it even if it is a little colder than expected” she added, they should have known the freak snow would hit when they had visitors.
Simon has been waiting to introduce Izzy to his family for some time now. He’d wanted to do it when they were in New York for Alec and Magnus’ wedding, but while he had gone to see his mother and sister, Izzy had been busy with helping her brother and mother with wedding stuff so it had never happened.
Now, however, he thought everyone was making a great first impression. “Hopefully they’ve shoveled the Walk of Fame. I know how much you’ve always wanted to see that, Rebecca.” Even after living in the OC for a few years now it still felt strange that it snowed.
“I’ll admit, I never truly believed Simon when he said it snowed here. Even when he’s send pictures.” His mother said as the waitress came to take their drink orders.
“I didn’t believe it the first time it happened, but it’s almost like a tradition now” Izzy smiled, before they placed their orders for drinks. “I’m just glad I had my winter coat from home the first time, I never imagined I would actually need it”
Simon nodded, “It almost makes me feel like I’m back in New York sometimes.” It was still a little strange when it snowed in the OC, but Simon had grown used to it over the last few years and looked forward to it now.
“Well, if what you’ve told me is true, doesn’t the snow mostly stay in the OC?” Rebecca asked, quirking a brow at Simon, “I mean, there really wasn’t any at the airport.”
“Ya know...I’ve gotten so used to it that I didn’t even realize that.” It was true; somehow the snow was mostly confined to Orange County, but did sometimes stray a little to areas nearby, but it was never really as bad there as it was in the OC. “Did you realize that?” He asked, glancing at Izzy.
“Definitely” Izzy agreed, it was nice in a way to be reminded of the place they had both grown up though she missed the warmth after a few days.
“I know it has stopped flights sometimes” Izzy said, searching her memory, “I’m sure there was one year when a friend of mine couldn’t fly home to the UK because the flights had been grounded. But I guess overall it does hit here worst more often than not”
“That’s right. I remember that,” Simon wasn’t exactly surprised that an area that didn’t usually get snow would ground flights or take other precautions even if the majority of the snow wasn’t really affecting them. “So after we eat we’ll head over to Hollywood and see if the snow has affected the area over there.”
“I’d also love to see the bakery you work at, Isabelle.” Simon’s mother said as their drinks arrived. “Simon has raved, on more than one, occasion of this sparkling latte so I think I need to try one.”
Simon couldn’t help but flush slightly, “I haven’t raved. I’ve just mentioned how good it is.” Simon might not have been able to eat human food, but he had at least trained this stomach to be able to handle drinks. They didn’t always stay down, but the majority of the time he managed to not get sick.
A lot of things stopped the first couple of years it happened, from what Izzy remembered but things seemed to be better now. It was almost like they were learning from experience.
“Of course, I’d love to show you around the bakery” Izzy said enthusiastically, “You could try some of the new cookies I’ve been making. I’d love to know what you think”
She smiled at Simon affectionately, “I love that you raved” she said with a squeeze to Simon’s hand.
“Okay, so maybe I raved a little,” In the dream Izzy was a pretty bad cook, but in the waking world she was one of the best cooks that Simon knew and he missed being able to eat the things that she made.
Simon smiles back at Izzy and heard his sister say, “Aww. You guys are too cute.”
Izzy beamed, “Thank you” she said to Rebecca, leaning her head on Simon’s shoulder, “My brother tries to claim that he and his husband are the cutest but that is simply not true” she added with a grin.
Simon glanced at his sister, “I guess cute is better than nauseating.” He was happy that his mother and sister both appeared to like Izzy, because as far as he was concerned she was it for him. He just wished their circumstances were different or to be exact his circumstances. “I don’t know, I think we’re all around the same level of cute.” Simon had absolutely no problem admitting that Alec and Magnus were extremely cute together.
At that the waitress came back with their drinks and proceeded to ask if they were ready to order, the main part of going out to eat that Simon always dreaded. He wasn’t sure exactly how the rest of his mother and sister’s visit was going to go, but he really hoped the whole not eating part wouldn’t end up being a huge problem.
“I guess I might accept being on the same level” Izzy grinned, before finding Simon’s hand underneath the table and giving him a reassuring squeeze. Knowing that the not eating was going to cause him anxiety while his family was here. She wanted him to remember she was here to help in whatever way she could. They were a team, no matter what.
