It always felt strange the days and weeks after an episode in the OC. Everyone picked themselves up, dusted off their clothes and went about their usual business as if nothing strange had happened. To be fair, there wasn’t much else that could be done after each event and it seemed that the general public was more inclined to accept whatever reasoning the area came up with for its strange occurrences. That or everyone was just becoming so use to it, they just didn’t question anymore.

For now, Judy wanted to enjoy the normalcy that had come back the OC and had asked Liv to join her for some lunch. It had been awhile since she had seen her friend and she figured they could both do with getting out. She said she’d pick her up and was soon texting her friend to say she was at her work, waiting outside.

As she did with most people who didn’t know what she was, Liv had a quick snack of brains before Judy came to pick her up at the morgue. She had known the young cop for awhile now and the zombie was considering sharing that she was a zombie. But she hadn’t yet. It was a big step. Even with all the craziness that happened in Orange County, all the other supernaturals running around, zombies were just different. They were predators, brainless monsters, At least that was how they were portrayed in most media. Liv was a different kind of zombie. But she sometimes didn’t get the chance to explain that.

As soon as she received the text from Judy she headed outside and climbed into her friend’s car. “Hey,” she greeted with a warm smile. “We really need to do this more often.” Easier said than done with how crazy things could get.

Judy couldn’t help but laugh as she pulled away, turning down the block to head towards a diner Judy liked. “Yeah, I guess we’re not really in the right field to be able to take afternoon lunches every week.” She looked over and grinned at her friend. “We could at least try, but know that the other might be called away suddenly.” Hey, at least the other would understand and not get upset if it happened every time. But they might be able to get a few good lunch dates out of it!

“How’s your day been so far?”

That was very true. Unfortunately people seemed to get murdered a lot. While it kept Liv busy, and fed, she hated all the deaths. Not to mention the calls to crime scenes to examine the body before it got taken back to the lab. But that was her line of work. And she wanted to do whatever she could to help victims find justice.

“The same as most,” Liv replied. “Did an autopsy, sent over the report. You know, the usual. What about you?”

“It was a paperwork day,” she said, a slight groan in her voice. “That’s why I texted to see if you wanted to do lunch! I had to get out. If I had to eat another lunch of vending machine food, I’d probably lose it.” She pulled up to a stoplight and glanced over at Liv. “Thanks for saving me and agreeing to go out!” She waited for their turn, almost to their destination. It’s like her stomach knew and started to grumble.

“Yikes, sorry,” she said, making to turn left on her green arrow. “I didn’t realize how hungr-” The rest of the sentence was cut off as the car was suddenly slammed on the passenger side by another vehicle. Judy couldn’t remember anything until the car had stopped spinning. Her eye sight seemed to be a bit blurry and things were muffled...almost like they were going in slow motion. What had happened? Someone hit our car. Are you ok? She reached up to feel a bump on her head and winced. Is Liv ok? “Oh my god, Liv!” She turned towards her friend, quickly, causing herself to see stars, but she tried to brush them away.

“Liv, oh my god, oh my god, Liv, are you ok?” Her eyes were shut and Judy couldn’t help but notice the indent on her side and the strange angle her arm was hanging.

When Liv came to she was already starting to heal. But the adrenaline of the crash had triggered her ‘full on zombie mode.’ Her eyes turned red, the veins on her face very pronounced and slightly purple. She couldn’t speak. Only grunt. However seeing Judy next to her struck something in Liv. She knew she had to calm down. She took a deep breath and her face returned to normal. Her injuries completely healed.

“Oh my god!” Exclaimed. “Are you okay?”

To say that Judy was shocked over Liv’s sudden change in appearance was an understatement. She found herself moving away instinctually, her eyes wide as she took in Liv’s appearance. It was only for a moment, but it was enough to leave Judy feel a bit shaken. But then it was Liv, her Liv again, the same concern written on her face, the same question being asked. It took her a moment to take everything in, but she slowly started to nod her head.

“Yeah...yeah, I’m alright,” she said slowly, looking at her friend and trying to see a trace of what had just appeared. “Are...are you alright?”

“Are you sure?” Liv asked again. Liv herself had gotten the brunt of the impact, but she was self healing. There was nothing to worry about with her. Granted Judy didn’t know that, but still. Liv was more worried about her friend. “Is your head okay?”

Her head. Judy placed a hand on her head realizing that it was starting to hurt a bit. “I’m fine,” she said, brushing it off and shaking it. “Just a little bit of a headache.” She glanced at Liv, finding that her friend really did seem to be alright. She was hyper aware that they were still in the car and the other driver was now out, knocking on their windows to check on them.

“How will you explain…” Judy let the sentence trail off, nodding towards the impact to her side of the car. It seemed she was unharmed, despite the fact there was a huge dent of the other cars fender in the side.

Liv gave a small smile to the driver of the other car. “You okay?” Liv asked the man.

The man knew he was in the wrong. He had rammed their car. Now he had to face the consequences. He was hardly expecting to see both woman looking pretty okay. Especially the one on the passenger side. By the look of both cars he would have expected some type of injury. But the fact that she seemed okay was a huge relief. He certainly wasn’t going to question it. “I think so, just a bit of whiplash,” he replied. “Should we call the police?” If that’s what they wanted he would do it, but he was hoping they could settle on just exchanging insurance information.

“No need sir,” Judy interjected, smiling and holding up her police badge. “If you two don’t mind swapping information, that’ll be enough.” She would make the report once she got back to the station. She just had to get someone to come and pick up the car. She glanced at Liv, hesitating before putting her hand over hers. “You sure you’re alright?” It came as a whisper as she looked at her friend, trying to see any semblance of what she had seen earlier.

“Here.” She handed her friend her notepad from the front of her uniform. “Write down your information and I’ll give it to him. Probably best to stay in the car.” Judy would tell the driver that her friend shouldn’t be moved, but there didn’t seem to be serious damage. They would wait for the ambulance and did he need to call someone for himself? Once she had gotten his information, she thanked him and walked back to get in the car.

She didn’t say anything at first; she just put her hands on the steering wheel and stared at them. “What happened?”

Once Judy was back in the car Liv knew she was going to have to explain things. But there was a part of her that was hoping that she hadn’t seen how hurt Liv had been before healing. Or that Liv had briefly gone into ‘full on zombie mode’.

“We were in a car accident?” Liv replied meaning for it to come out as a statement but it ended up sounding more like a question.

Judy couldn’t help but give her friend an eye roll. “Alright, thanks for that,” she said, shaking her head. “You know what I’m talking about!” Her eyes grew a bit wider. “You know...when you kinda freaked out and your eyes got red and I could kinda see your veins? And then you’re...you know…not hurt?” It had to do with something from the dreams, it had to! Judy wondered why Liv didn’t want to actually talk about it.

“Oh that,” Liv replied trying to sound as casual as possible. This conversation usually went well. At least when she had it with Dan and Clara. Leon on the other hand? It had taken him awhile to come around. Liv was really hoping that was just a Leon thing and not a cop thing in general. “I’m sort of already dead,” Liv began. “So I just heal when I get hurt.” She knew that didn’t exactly explain the red eyes and veins part, but she was trying to ease Judy into this. One thing at a time.

Judy blinked, looking over at her. “You’re...already dead,” she said slowly. Dreams...gotta be dreams. “Like...right now you’re actually dead? Did your dreams kill you??” Her eyes grew wide as she thought about what that could mean. Was that possible? To die in your dreams, but come back? “So you’re like...a zombie?” It would account for what she had just seen, but how come she wasn’t like that all the time? Weren’t zombies like the ones they had just fought a month ago?

“Yes,” Liv replied simply. It was the answer to all Judy’s questions. Yes, she was technically dead right now. Yes, it was because of the dreams. Yes, she was indeed a zombie. But Liv just left it at yes. Letting Judy process everything.

Judy sat staring at her for a moment, before leaning back in her seat, taking it in. Liv was a zombie. A dead zombie. How had she never noticed it before? She guessed she did look kinda pale, but she didn’t want to seem racist about it. But she didn’t act anything like what the zombies they fought against were like. Really, Judy had no idea! How could she?

“So...how come you went all...red eyes like that?” She looked back over at her, trying to stay open to this whole thing.

Judy seemed to be handling the whole thing okay. She knew it was a lot to take in. She wouldn’t blame Judy for freaking out. “It happens when my adrenaline gets triggered,” Liv tried her best to explain. “I’m not exactly sure why or how to control it. It’s just how my body responds.”

“You don’t know how to control it?” Judy couldn’t help but lift her eyebrows in surprise, suddenly wondering if there had been other times that Liv might have been close to doing the same thing. How many times had she missed it? Were there any signs? She shook her head, trying to clear it. She was trying to be reasonable about this, it was Liv. Being a zombie wouldn’t change that she was her friend.

“Sorry,” she said, glancing at her. “It’s just... just kinda weird? I mean no offense! Although I’m sure it’s weird for you. I just...yeah.” It was hard to explain. While weird things happened in this area a lot, there were still some things that were harder to accept.

“No,” Liv replied. It was something that just happened. Even in the dreams. Luckily it didn’t happen all that often. And she was getting better at bringing herself back when it did happen.

Liv gave a small smile as Judy apologized. “Don’t worry about it It’s definitely weird. Even for me.” But if the situation was reversed. If she was learning one of her friends was a zombie, she’d probably be beyond freaked out. She would let Judy process however she wanted with no offense taken. It was only fair in a situation like this.
