How’d you want it to go?
Who: Rey and Finn
What: Valentine in Space
When: Right after Rey rescued Finn from her archnemesis Weiss in Feb
Where: Space
Status: Complete
Rating: PG
Finn had never been so grateful for the existence of the Millennium Falcon as he was right now. Hours earlier he'd barely made it out alive after being chased down by a crazy fan who had been more than determined to marry him on the spot. He'd had to make a mayday call to Rey, his girlfriend and she'd shown up in the hulking ship moments later.
Now they were in space, hovering near the Earth, just out of reach of her innumerable satellites. The giant globe was gorgeous, sapphire blue oceans with swirling white clouds were the current view, with the continents just at the edges of the sphere.
He'd suggested grabbing Chewie (his puppy, not the actual Chewbacca) and having what was supposed to be their candlelight dinner in orbit instead of at the restaurant. Just to avoid any other OC shenanigans.
Finn was leaning back in the copilot's seat sipping his wine. They'd just finished eating and Chewie was somewhere behind them still trying to figure out if BB-8 was a toy or not, his soft huffs and growls occasionally punctuating the silence.
“Man, no wonder you come out here with the Falcon. This view, I can't get enough of this.”
Once she’d calmed down and was less decidedly into the idea of killing that girl, Rey felt better. She didn’t like being jealous, and she didn’t know where that had come from. It should bother her more.
“It reminds me that the world is borderless.” She came up behind him, putting her hand on Finn’s shoulder and squeezed. “It’s also the best way for me to meditate. Less distractions up here.”
“Hm,” he intoned, then going quiet as he mulled over the ‘borderless’ thought. The world always looked so perfect and peaceful in images of it from space, and seeing it in person only enhanced that image. His eyebrows raised at what she said after. Looking up at her he smirked. “Distractions, huh?” He had that silly lopsided grin of his.
“You would be one of those distractions,” she retorted, sliding around the chair and sitting in his lap. Rey had gotten more and more comfortable with this kind of affection over recent months, though never, ever in public. She lifted her hand to stroke his face.
Finn smiled at her and nuzzled her hand, kissing the soft flesh of her palm. “Well I'm not sorry.” He grinned then and gave her lips a kiss. Wrapping his arms around her he tugged her closer, leaning his forehead against hers. “Happy Valentine's Day.” With all the chaos they hadn't even said it to the other. After his dramatic rescue and then picking up the dog, they'd gotten to chowing down on dinner like there was no tomorrow. Nothing like a little Orange County induced stress eating.
“This old hunk of junk got any speakers? Music?” He knew Rey was continually working on the Falcon, so he wasn't entirely sure what Earth style modifications she might have made, if any.
Rey had to admit, she’d never understood Valentine’s Day. She still didn’t, not really. Why couldn’t people share affection the rest of the year, and why should they have to buy cheesy cards? She also didn’t like cards.
But she did like Finn, and if it made him happy and wasn’t a bad thing, she was generally all for it. Not that Finn would ever need bad things to be happy. “Of course it’s got speakers. I found a junker and ripped out the speakers. Really expensive stereo system in it too, but it was all intact. What do you want to listen to? Your choice.”
As if an afterthought, she added, “Happy Valentine’s day.”
It was a good thing Finn’s cards and candy had gotten snatched away by Weiss. He would have been disappointed if he ever found out Rey didn’t like cards (especially considering he’d spent a solid fifteen minutes trying to find the right one amidst the chaos of the card aisle). He always wanted to make Rey happy, though sometimes he wasn’t always sure how to. She was a complicated woman, much more than just a Scavenger from the dreams and the mechanic she was here. It was why he took his time with Rey, and tried not to go overboard in displays of affection. Of course, sometimes he just couldn’t help himself. There was just this incredible, unspoken bond between them.
“Expensive stereo system eh? What, like Bose?” After a moment of thought of a music choice he shrugged. “You pick. Ladies choice.” He’d done the ‘mix tape’ last year, he was curious as to what Rey would come up with.
What Rey wanted and needed was Finn, and maybe some of their other friends would be nice. But just Finn, as himself, and their time together, and to know she could always reach him when they were apart. Her dreams had kind of drilled that last thing into her pretty hard.
“I think so? I’m afraid I didn’t pay attention to brand name. It worked and it wasn’t that hard to get it wired into the Falcon. I think my next project should be a holographic disco ball for shits and giggles.”
She leaned over him, punching a command into the console. It immediately started playing a remix ofTotal Eclipse of the Heart.
“Holographic disco ball. I can dig it.” Finn chuckled. When the song started playing he raised an eyebrow at her. “Wow. Really? Total Eclipse of the Heart? That's some serious retro right there.” He was teasing of course. He cocked his head to the side, realizing it wasn't quite the original. “Huh. Remix.” There was a growl and a bark as Chewie tried to pounce on BB-8, the droid letting out a surprised electronic “screee!” before warbling in frustration as his head got knocked off. “Chewie!” Finn admonished. The pup, forgetting the droid at the sound of his name, loped over to them with all the awkward movements of a juvenile dog. He brushed up against both of their legs, wanting attention. “Hey, this is our time.” Finn made a face.
“I had an unusual upbringing,” Rey replied, giving him a self-conscious smile. It was a miracle she’d heard or seen anything produced after 1996 or so. The places she’d grown up (she hesitated to call them homes) had left little for her to do but work on her skills and dream.
She’d never dreamed of space ships, though. Airplanes, perhaps, but not spaceships. And definitely not a boyfriend or girlfriend. That had, actually, been the last thing on her mind before she’d met Finn, and even then it had been a slow but steady shift in her feelings for him. And the better she’d known him, the more she liked him.
And then Chewie conveniently interrupted before she could say the thing that had been growing in her heart for months, only to become clear in the face of her new Arch-Enemy Weiss.
“Hey Chewie,” Rey said, getting off of Finn’s lap and smiling teasingly at him before she got down to roll with the dog. “Don’t pay any attention to him!”
“Hey!” Finn frowned, spreading his hands. “We were having a moment!” Sort of. He watched as Rey played with the dog, then looked over at BB-8 who said something to him in droid. He had been learning BB-8’s language thanks to Rey so now he understood most of what the little spherical guy was saying. “Yeah I know, right? But I don’t have a dog sitter. So y’know, what are you gonna do?”
He watched as Chewie pounced and rolled and pup roughoused with Rey a moment before purposefully clearing his throat. “Scuse me, but it’s getting a little lonely over here.” He smirked and stretched out a foot to poke/play shove Chewie away from his girlfriend. The pup turned and started play biting at his shoe.
Rey rolled onto her back and laughed, watching the dog play with his shoe. It was such a normal scene despite them being on a space ship that she just kind of felt like crying. “God, I love you.”
Finn was so busy enjoying the moment as well he almost missed that.
Almost.
He cocked his head to the side a degree, one eyebrow raised. “Wait...did you just..” And as the realization dawned on him, he grinned the brightest, whitest broad toothed grin ever in the history of his Finn grins. She’d actually said it. Rey had said those three little words he’d all but given up on hoping he’d hear her say anytime soon. “You said you love me.”
“I did not!” She covered her hand with her mouth, smiling behind it. “Damn, that’s not how I wanted to do this!”
Which meant she’d planned something.
Finn laughed and got down out of the chair, sitting on the floor next to her, making sure to keep his foot out to keep Chewie busy with his shoe. “You mean, you had a plan?” He smiled lovingly at her, at how cute she looked so caught off guard. Reaching out he brushed a stray wisp of hair behind her ear. He couldn't believe what he was hearing, and he loved it. He was always the one fussing over how to show Rey his feelings, and he knew how she always kept things so close to her heart.
He leaned his forehead against hers and said softly between them, “Tell me. How’d you want it to go?”
“No. Yes.” Rey grimaced, turning her head so she didn’t have to meet his eyes. Sometimes, he looked at her so intently that it was impossible to hold his gaze. That wasn’t a bad thing, she just could only take so much.
She took a breath, then looked him in the eyes, and in the dryest voice possible replied, “I was going to put fireworks on the Falcon while doing skywriting.”
“Wait... really??” Finn gaped at her in disbelief. “Cuz that's...wow. I didn't even know the Falcon could do that.” He could just see that crazy stalker woman's mind exploding as the Falcon wrote “I love you Finn" in huge letters across the sky and suddenly he wished Rey had.
Rey stared at him, before letting a grin spread across her face. “Of course not. But now I wish I had.”
Finn looked a little crestfallen when he realized Rey had been joking. But at the sight of that enigmatic grin, he couldn’t help but match it. “Hey, I don’t need fireworks. Just you.” And he gave her lips a kiss.
BB-8 warbled behind them.
“Hey, can we get a little...y’know?” he gestured for BB-8 to go away into another part of the ship. The droid ignored him and leaned over to look past him at Rey as if for permission.
That kiss was certainly fireworks enough for Rey, and she grinned at him before nodding at BB-8. “Can you make sure the stabilizers are are in shape, and then flush the engines?”
That should give them plenty of time.
