Judy had gotten a call about the neighborhood she had been patrolling. Apparently there were some gunshots heard in an apartment complex and she responded she was on her way to check it out. Gunshots were never a good thing and Judy hoped no one was injured (or worse) in the incident.
She pulled her car over, turning off the siren but letting the lights run. Getting out, she saw a few cars and vans already there, but none that boasted the Irvine PD were present. Frowning, she looked around for someone that looked authoritative to check in with.
“What’s going on?” she asked, walking up to a woman with (naturally?) red hair. “I got a call that there were gunshots in this location, what do you need?”
Nat turned, looking at the woman out of the corner of her eye. “We’ve got it handled.” The last thing she wanted was the local popo getting involved. The situation was too delicate, and it could easily draw in the actual government. Which would be worse.
Judy raised an eyebrow at her brusque answer and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “Yeah? And who’re ‘we’?”
Sighing, Nat pulled out her badge, “Department of Homeland Security. We’re investigating a potential terrorist incident.”
Without knowing if a cop was a dreamer, she had to fall back on one of her many covers. And she didn’t have time to check on if this cop was a dreamer.
Judy’s arms unfolded as she squinted at the badge. “Nadine Roman. Well I’m sure my Chief of Police wouldn’t mind sparing me to assist you. It would be good to have a local on this in case it raises any questions that need responding to right away.” She’d never dealt with the feds before, but she didn’t allow that to intimidate her. Judy wasn’t exactly sure if Nadine could officially kick her off the scene, but maybe she could reason her way in.
“That’s all right,” Natasha said, shoulders straightening to make her height more impressive. “We’ve got this handled. I don’t want the scene any more contaminated than it already is.”
Oh, so that was the game she was going to play? Judy tried the same technique, although it probably didn’t have the same glamour to it. She was still a fairly small policewoman, a fact that was brought up many times. “I think I know my way around a crime scene enough to not contaminate it,” she said, crossing her arms.
“There’s nothing you’re going to be able to do,” Nat insisted, shifting so that she was facing Judy. She planted her hands on her hips, her trenchcoat fluttering in the breeze. “This is out of your jurisdiction.”
Judy had begun tapping her foot at the beginning of their exchange and was now close to making a world record in taps per minute. She caught herself and blew out a breath through her mouth. “Fine! Can you at least tell me the nature of what happened? Was anyone hurt? Killed? Any suspects?”
“Yes, no, and yes,” Natasha allowed, and even that much seemed like pulling teeth. But it would come out eventually that someone had been shot. Both Neena and Linette had been taken to the hospital.
Even with her brusque answers, Judy flipped open her notepad and jotted down the information. “Are these suspects still at large?” She glanced at Nadine over the top flap of her notepad, hoping she could keep her occupied as much as possible. The more information she could get from her, the more she could research once she was back at the precinct. Maybe Leon would be able to help her.
“The suspect is believed to have been under duress, and will be dealt with appropriately,” Natasha replied, cautiously. It wasn’t Deryn’s fault she’d been brainwashed, and it was the sort of thing that local courts weren’t equipped to deal with.
“And what do you believe has happened to the suspect?” Judy knew she was walking on thin ice, but she was going to try and get as many answers as she could before she fell through. Every now and then she would glance around her, taking in the scene around her. Despite Nadine’s badge, some things weren’t matching up for her.
“The suspect fled and was likely reclaimed by their captors.” She folded her arms, starring Judy down and daring her to blink.
Judy may have swallowed a bit more than usual, but she tried her best to remain calm. “Reclaimed by their captors? You think this apart of a kidnapping?” She frowned. This seemed to be a bit messier than it appeared. She was grateful for Nadine informing her of so much, even though it was like pulling teeth.
“Look, after you’re done here, can you stop by my precinct? In case my captain has additional questions? Or you’ve got a card or something with a number we can reach you?”
“That’s a national security issue. I’d be happy to stop by the precinct later,” Or never. “Once I’ve wrapped up here.”
“National?” Judy hadn’t heard anything like that before and had a feeling when she spoke to the others in the other, they wouldn’t have either. She closed her notebook and stood there looking at Natasha, trying to figure it out. “That would be great, if you wouldn’t mind,” she said, fully aware she hadn’t gotten a firm confirmation. “So Nadine Roman. What’s your badge number again?”
“28-616,” Natasha replied, turning back to what she was doing in a clear dismissal of the cop. Most beat cops would let this go, and while she respected them (most of the time), she needed Judy to hop away.
The notepad was out again, making note of the badge number next to her name. “Right then. I’ll be seeing you this afternoon then.” Judy hesitated only once before heading back to her car. She would head straight to the department and look up this Nadine Roman.
