Who: Logan & Rose What: Neena’s hurt When: Right before these texts Where: An ER Rating: Low Status: Complete!
Even before Logan had sent the text out, Rose had gotten a call from the hospital telling her Neena was there. She hadn’t even realized she was her emergency contact, but she was thankful to know when something had happened. They didn’t specify what had happened, only that Neena was lucky to be alive and in rough condition. Rose booked it to the hospital, her look a bit in a disarray as she had just thrown on whatever to be seen in public. She looked around, not sure where she actually had to go. Nurses station...everything started at the nurses station, right?
She made her way over, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “Um, hi, I’m Rose Tyler? I got a call that my friend Neena Thurman was here? Is she ok? Is she going to be ok?” Rose couldn’t help but get a little weepy eyed, but brushed the tears back. She had to stay strong, had to be there for Neena when she woke up.
She was guided to the waiting area, where she saw a familiar face. She didn’t really know Logan, but knew him enough from Neena. She hesitated a moment before making her way over to him. He didn’t really seem the type to want company, but she needed it right now.
“Logan? I dunno if you know me, but I’m a friend of Neena’s. They called me, said I was her emergency contact and that she was here and it wasn’t...it didn’t look good.” She had to really concentrate to keep her voice from quivering, but she was able to keep it together. “Is there any news? What’s going on? What happened?”
Logan looked like he could use a cigarette or a beer. Possibly both. He’d have to be in and out for awhile, before the trail got cold, but he wanted to make sure Neena came out of surgery okay.
“Nice to meet you. Wish it was under better circumstances.” He leaned back in his seat. “It’s really, really bad.”
Well, so much for sugar coating it. “How bad?” she asked, taking a seat next to him. She grasped her hands in front of her, finding that could be her only anchor. “Do you know what happened?” He legs started to bounce up and down. It was strange how she could have so much energy at a time like this.
“She’s in surgery. The shot missed her heart, that's all I know for sure.” Logan shrugged, “Can’t tell you what really happened, not here. But I can fill you in later if you want.”
Couldn’t tell her here? Rose frowned, taking in the information as she turned to look at the double doors into the ER. If he couldn’t tell her, chances were it was something dangerous or illegal...or both. She knew Neena had a new kind of job but hadn’t asked too many questions about it. Rose still had the bar and that was their thing. Should she have asked more questions? Would Neena have even been able to tell her?
“Missed the heart. So she’s got a better chance, right?” Rose kept her eyes on the doors, wondering which doctor would burst out with news about Neena.
Definitely both, but if she was that close, then she’d find out eventually. Logan rubbed his face, “Yeah. That luck is the only thing that saved her. And with the dream timing, she might just be okay.”
“Dream timing?” Rose sat a little straighter and looked at Logan. “Did something happen in her dreams recently?” Rose thought back, trying to remember the last thing she knew about Neena’s dreams. The only thing that really stuck out was her appearance. Man that had taken a lot of concealer.
Logan shook his head, “Just a guess. I roughly knew where she was. So I was speculating.”
Rose felt like her emotions were on a rollercoaster and could have punched the guy sitting next to her. Instead, she closed her eyes and told herself to breathe.
When she felt more in control of her emotions, she ventured to continue to conversation.“So you have the same kind of dreams as Neena?”
He pursed his lips, remaining silent for a moment before he gave her a response. “Yeah. Same kinda dreams, same kinda place. I’m a mutant too.”
Mutant...is that what Neena was? Rose nodded her head slowly, taking it all in. “Right. Mutant.” She glanced at Logan, wondering if she could figure out what it was he could do. “So...what are Neena’s powers? Other than looking like she saw a ghost?” Ok, maybe that was in poor taste and she winced. “You think it might be something that can help her?”
“Luck. Literally. Probability,” Logan explained. “She can load the dice and make things come out better for her. Like a bullet missing her heart. Casinos love her.”
That was an interesting power. Rose couldn’t help but make an impressed face. She folded her arms over her chest, leaning back in her chair. “Noted the next time I need some extra cash,” she said, the joke coming out a bit dry. Her leg still bounced up and down and she moved to start chewing on one of her fingernails.
“Is there a probability that the luck wouldn’t be on her side?”
“Yep.” Logan wasn’t going to lie about that. Eventually, Neena could have a streak of bad luck. He kind of hoped this wasn’t the start of one of those streaks. He kind of preferred his friends alive. “Tell you what, we’ll all go to Vegas after this.”
Rose leaned forward and put her head in her hands. This was way too much emotion to go through in one day. “Yeah, great, Vegas,” she said. How could this guy stay so calm? Was this a common occurrence in their world? Please let luck be on her side, please oh please oh please oh please Rose shook her head, her hand running to hold her hair back as she stared at the ground.
“Did she tell you we were gonna open the bar again? She’s gotta be there for the bar.” Rose wouldn’t know what to do about running a bar on her own and it wouldn’t have the same feel as when Neena was in charge.
Logan was calm not just because it was a common occurrence, but also because there was nothing he could do. It made no sense to rage, and he’d already raged enough.
“I remember somethin’ about that. And yeah, she’ll pull through and get that bar running. She’s gotta.”
Rose nodded her head, repeating what Logan had just said “Yeah, she’s gotta.” If she really had luck on her side, it wouldn’t hurt to try and give her a little more. She glanced at the man sitting beside her, wondering how he and Neena actually came to be friends here. Then again, he could probably have the same questions about her and Neena; at least he shared a dream world with her.
“Is there anyone else that needs to be contacted? I don’t even know if she has family…” She thought of Jose and dismissed it. She would be sure to tell him but he didn’t need to know right away.
“She doesn’t have anyone. Just her mutant family, an’ people like you.” So pretty much anyone that mattered already knew. “I was gonna send a text to her contacts on her phone.”
Another nod and she stood up. “I’m guessing we’ll both be here for awhile. Can I get you coffee or anything?” She felt too antsy to sit still anymore and figured a walk around the hospital would help.
“What I really want is a beer, but I think a coffee might help.”Logan pulled some cash out of his jeans. It was enough for both of them to have something.
Rose hesitated on accepting the cash, but ended up taking it. She had a feeling the two of them would be there for awhile, so she was sure she could get the next round. “Cheers,” she said, stuffing the money in her back pocket. “Maybe we can grab a beer after we get the all clear.” Yeah, she could go for the same. Or something stronger.
