Anakin eyed the advanced wall with its horizontal planes that jutted out from the wall. His mind deep into calculating how he could progress along a challenge like that with just one arm to lift him up, and one arm that could really only be used for stabilization, lest he risk detaching the lower half altogether. If he took a path that let him grab that globular red knob with his left hand and then grab the globby knob with his right to steady himself he could risk hanging there a second and maybe he could “jump” by pulling himself up fast enough with his left arm-
“Hey, are you gonna move?” a smallish child asked from below him.
“Uh,” he’d been caught day dreaming. “Oh, ya, ya.” And he started climbing again.
He took care to angle his path out of the way of the little girl who was now racing to the top of this medium-rated wall as if she was showing him up. That part was probably in his head.
He was here just to see how his prosthetic worked with rock climbing, he reminded himself with a sigh, not to push himself beyond what he could do. This was part of “self-therapy.” Some things he could work on at the clinic, under supervision, but they didn’t have a full scale wall for him to try climbing. But thinking about this as an assignment, a mission given to him from a superior, came with another set of mental problems which he didn’t want to poke with a stick. So he tried to focus on the “fun” part. This was fun. Therapy that was fun. Therapy that was fun, that was reminding him of the things he used to be able to do but couldn’t-
No, he wasn’t supposed to think of it that way, he was supposed to see it as discovering what he could do. Positive. Think positive.
He reached the top of the wall and looked behind him down at the ground, checking to make sure he could descend safely. After making sure the area was clear, he kicked off the wall and slowly released the rope. He touched down, but his eyes were drawn back to that advanced level wall…
He used to have that level mastered.
Without realizing, he stepped back and then bumped into someone.
Turning immediately, “Hey, sorry about that, I wasn’t paying attention.” He unclamped the rope and offered it to the man he’d run into. “Did you want this?”
