It had started off like any other day for Jessica. It didn’t matter that it was Easter or April Fools; she had neither family to spend Easter with in California, or friends to be pranked by, which was just fine by Jessica’s standards. She’d never needed either of those things.
What she did need was some coffee for the hangover and maybe a bagel. Seeing the line of bright yellow peeps wandering down the street had given her pause, and she’d stopped to stare at them for a long while. Then, she shook her head, bewildered, and continued on to the coffee shop. It must have been the hangover. Maybe she should cut back on the drinking if she was starting to see things in the street. With that thought in mind, she stopped herself from adding an Irish kick to her coffee as she left the shop.
With bagel and coffee in hand, she made her way to one of the nearby parks and sat down on a bench so she could enjoy her breakfast in peace. The morning was still a little chilly out, which felt nice to her aching brain. Jessica had never had any intention of settling anywhere, and she was already wondering if the Orange County was really the place for her. Between people oversharing their dreams on the internet and her hallucinating peeps wandering around, she was beginning to think that she might be better off somewhere else.
She hadn't even thought about jumping to her feet when she'd heard the cry. Already she was trying to figure out from which direction it had come from, and when she did she was running in that direction. She only paused for a moment when she saw what appeared to be a rabbit attacking someone, uttered a low "What the fuck," and grabbed a nearby branch. She closed the gap between them and swung her branch, knocking the rabbit away from the other person.
