Alice was glad that Minako’s parents hadn’t even blinked an eye when she’d told them that a friend was coming down to check on her. Not even when she’d told them his name and that he was older. Or that he and Mina knew each other through her. It wouldn’t be the first time that had happened over the years Mina and Alice had known each other.
She had asked one of the nurses on duty if there was a room where she and Logan could talk in private and was just waiting outside of Minako’s room for him while her parents were in there sitting with her, reading to her from a textbook. Or at least that’s how it sounded to Alice outside the room. After she and Logan talked she’d slip back in and read some more to her from one of the books on her e-reader. They’d at least be a little more exciting than a textbook.
If nothing else, Logan had the mentor angle, which wasn’t really a lie. With the business he ran, that was exactly what it was. As attractive as Alice was, without the tower they probably wouldn’t have fucked. Probably.
“Hey.” Logan nodded at her, leaning against the wall. “You doin’ okay?”
Alice gave him a half smile as she turned to face him. “I’m okay. A little stressed but nothing to be worried about. And if one more nurse asks me if I’m sure I don’t want to lie down for a little while I’m going to scream. I’m not the one they need to be worried about.” She said, trying to sound calm. “Did you see anything weird on the way over here? Are you okay?”
Logan rolled his eyes. Alice was barely showing in his opinion, but he supposed nurses tended to be that way. He avoided doctors like the plague, even before he’d become effectively immortal. “Saw some weird shit, actually. But I’m getting used to seeing weird shit here.”
“Anything that could shed some light onto this mess?” Alice asked, pointing in the general direction of Minako’s room.
“Looked liked embryos,” Logan said. If he looked out the window, he was pretty sure he’d see them again. It was one of the creepier things he’d ever seen.
Alice shuddered a little bit her mind flashing back to a post she’d seen on the network when scanning it for any clue as to what could be happening. “Somebody else mentioned seeing those. I’m suddenly glad I couldn’t see whatever it was. If you want to go check on Mina her parents are in there now but like I said - I told them a friend was coming by to see how she was doing. I asked one of the nurses if there was a waiting room or something where we could talk privately.” If things were really getting as bad out there as her conversations on the Network were making her think they were, not to mention what she’d overheard from the hospital staff, she had a feeling good people like Logan would be more needed out there than here talking with her about this.
“What do you want to talk about?” Logan asked, nodding his head in the direction of what he thinks she’s talking about. There wasn’t much he could do at the moment anyway, and Alice seemed antsy.”
Alice reached out for his hand, leading him over to the waiting room and closing the door to give them a little extra privacy. “You don’t have to answer today but - I was thinking maybe we should just come out with it. You being the father. Skeeter’s….reports” and there was definitely a note of disgust in the word reports as it rolled off her tongue. “The professor at my school she named - is being investigated by the board because of it. Even though I’m not actually in any of his classes there’s something about it not reflecting well on the school this kind of implied relationship. I just don’t want to keep messing up innocent people’s lives but I also don’t want to take away your privacy in this because it’ll affect your life too if people find out. And your family’s.”
Logan thought that this might have been coming. He wasn’t sure he was all that ready for it just yet. Not that Qrow deserved that kind of scrutiny. He made a gruff sound, leaning against a table and folding his arms. “If it wasn’t him, it would be someone else. She’ll probably target me at some point, too.”
“Probably. I’m not asking for an answer today. Just please think about it?” Alice asked him, kicking out of her flats as she made herself comfortable in one of the chairs. It was a lot more comfortable than the chair outside Mina’s room. Or the one in her room.
“Okay.” Logan nodded his head, coming over to her and putting a hand on her shoulder. He squeezed. “I’ll think about it. You deserve that much.”
Alice gave him a small smile and reached up to cover his hand and squeeze gently. “Mina’s parent are probably wondering where the friend I said was coming by is at. And I need to go find a bottle of water or tea or something before I go back in there for my turn at reading to her. The doctor says she might be able to hear us and it’s not fair that her mom is using this time to force her to nonstop study. You should go poke your head in since you said you wanted to check on her while you were here right?”
“I can do that,”Logan promised. “I got a few things she ought to hear anyway. Girl needed a break. Shame it took a coma.”
