Nora had absolutely no shame in going to the food bank. She had lived well below the poverty line for all of her adult life and most of her adolescent years. After falling between the cracks in the system, and living on the street, going to ask for a little extra food or money at this time of year was one of those things was part of every day life. Just a thing she did.
She came home from the food bank with a cardboard box loaded with goodies. Jello, rice, canned goods, powdered milk, various other things, and a small, frozen turkey. She kicked the door closed behind her, and cried out for Ren.
“Success! I bringeth nourishment!” She bounced into the kitchen to start putting things away. They’d have a great feast tonight for Thanksgiving!
Ren had been preparing the kitchen for Nora’s return. He enjoyed cooking and since they’d found one another, Ren had done most of the cooking for the two of them. Now that Nora had come back, he could get started on what to make. He wondered what kind of treats Nora had managed to find while she was out.
As he looked through the boxes, he wasn’t disappointed. The fact that she’d managed to secure a turkey was lucky. He honestly hadn’t expected them to be that lucky. He transferred it to the sink while Nora busied herself putting everything else away, thinking of how best to cook the turkey and what else he could make with the ingredients Nora had brought.
“This is gonna be the best Thanksgiving ever! Oooh, look!” Nora held up not one, but TWO cans of pureed pumpkin. “Pie! We can make pie! Do you know how to make pie? I’m sure you’re amazing at making pie. Have we ever gotten canned pumpkin before? I think so! I think we’ve got pumpkin pie spice in the cupboard! And sugar! And… what else do we need to make pie?”
Ren smiled. “We’ll have to make the crust first,” he said. Luckily, it was wasn’t hard to make the crust. He got the butter out of the fridge and then went looking for the flour. They always had a good supply of flour on hand. Pancakes were cheap to make and rather delicious.
Nora trusted Ren to keep the place stocked with all the pancake making supplies. Though every once in a while she picked up the things she knew went into them. Baking soda, baking powder, salt, vanilla, eggs, butter, milk, flour. Right? That was easy enough. It was just knowing the combinations and how much of everything, and when to add the wet to the dry ingredients. That was all Ren’s job.
“Crust! Yes! Can’t have a pie without a good crust! It’s like I always say.” Nora finished putting the cans from the bags away, then folded those to put them in the “use again” bag stash. She hopped up onto the counter to watch Ren work. “Pie and turkey and stuffing and… what else are we making? Oooh, I’ll make the cranberry sauce!” She held up the can of cranberry sauce and grinned.
Ren smiled back at her. He didn’t mind that Nora wasn’t exactly the World’s Greatest Chef. He liked cooking, and he especially liked how much Nora appreciated his cooking. Having her in the kitchen with him helped make the experience a little more interesting as well.
“When you’re done with the cranberry sauce, you can start thawing the turkey,” he said, nodding toward the sink.
“Ah! Yes! Something else I can do.” Nora returned his smile with one of her own, then climbed down off the countertop so she could move to the sink. “Luke warm water, right? Not hot water?” She asked, turning on the faucet. She’d have to open the cranberry sauce… later. Right? Since turkey took a ton of time to cook.
“Cold water,” Ren corrected her. He smiled. “This Thanksgiving dinner will really be something though. The best we’ve had in years.”
“Cold water.” Nora returned his smile. She was happy. Very happy. She turned on the tap.
