Beautiful day huh? Good to get the time in before it starts to get cold!
Who: Luthien and Rose Tyler, ft. Huan and the kids
Where: The beach
When: Early October
What: Random encounters and huge dogs
Status: Complete
Rating: PG
With her wife busy for the day, Luthien had taken Huan and the children to the beach. It wasn’t too cold today, but she didn’t really feel like swimming. The sea sometimes called to her, though nowhere near as strongly as it often did to her descendents in her dreams.
They made an interesting procession, such a tall woman in a long blue dress with a hound the size of a horse, and two small children riding it. But she found the spot she wanted and set down a blanket as the boy, maybe 5, started to dig around in the sand. She set the girl down next to her. Maethoriel was barely a year old.
Luthien nodded to the dog. “Huan, make sure Dior does not get too close to the water.”
Huan seemed to nod back, and plodded over to the boy, plopping down between Dior’s sandcastle and the water.
It was a beautiful day and Rose had it off! She debated about what she wanted to do but ultimately decided on the beach. It had been the right choice as it was during the week and everyone else was stuck at home. Sure, there were a few people scattered here and there, but nothing like it could be on the weekends. This was the reason she moved here.
She made her way down to the shoreline, taking a moment to take her sandals off so she could walk barefoot on the sand. This was pure bliss.
She was walking to find a spot to lay her towel out when she passed a woman and her two children and...bloody hell, was that a dog? She hesitated in passing them and turned to address the woman.
“That is the biggest dog I’ve ever seen. What kind is it?”
"A very rare breed of wolfhound," Luthien replied, smiling. Her accent pegged her as not American, though there were either Italian or French influences, possibly both.
It was close to the truth, though since 'super-smart hound of the gods' was probably hard to swallow for most people.
Rose made an interested face, nodding her head. “Impressive. Is it alright if I pet ‘em?” She glanced at the woman, beautiful in a sort of eerie way. She hoped she wasn’t staring and glanced at the dog again. It seemed friendly enough, but she also didn’t want to be taken down by a dog that big.
Luthien looked at the hound, who seemed to nod his head. “He says it is fine. Go ahead!”
It was hard to describe just how smart Huan was. In that other life, he was smart enough to talk, though he was only prophesied to speak three times before he died. He never had in Orange County, and Luthien was grateful for that.
Rose thought she was going metal, but it almost seemed like the dog had nodded its head when the lady had looked at him. Crazy still was when she said he had said it was alright. Glancing between the two, Rose only hesitated a little before moving forward to pet the head of the giant dog. She couldn’t help but smile.
“He’s beautiful. What’s his name?”
“Huan,” Luthien said, a mysterious smile on her face. The hound leaned his head into the petting, his tongue hanging out. “I think he likes you. I’ve always thought of him as a good judge of character.”
“Huan,” she said, testing out the name for herself. She grinned at the dog, before looking over at the lady next to her. “Thank you,” she said, taking the compliment with a bashful smile. “Hopefully I can live up to that judgement!” She straightened up, reaching out with her other hand to formally meet her. “I’m Rose. Beautiful day huh? Good to get the time in before it starts to get cold!”
“It is. And I wanted to give my wife a break so she can focus on her own work.” Luthien calmly redirected Mae before she wandered off into the sand. “And in truth, I needed the break from my work as well. I make music, and sometimes you need a day to reassess.”
“Nice give them some time to work,” she said, watching as she handled her little one. “And the beach is always the best place to escape from everything. I know I enjoy coming here when I’m feeling restless.” She watched the two children that were with her, not one to deal with children, but they seemed fairly well behaved.
“What kind of music do you do?”
Luthien gave Rose a broad smile. She’d always loved that question, if only because the answer was a little fun. “I like to call it Ethereal Rock. Guitars and a deep bass, and a voice that calls you across the sea and through the forest to another Age of the earth, when man and elf walked side by side and one could spend hours dancing alone beneath the stars.”
That was quite a description of the music! But it (kind of) made sense to Rose and she nodded her head, trying to imagine what it could sound like. “So kind of like...celtic music mixed with a bit of rock?” Really, the idea was interesting and it made Rose curious to listen to it. “Do you have any music out right now?”
“A little bit. And I have three albums now. And I do concerts frequently, mostly for charity events.” Luthien leaned forward. “When I moved here from Monaco, I bought a house that had excellent acoustics. I do all my recording there.”
That there was a tree inside had also been a reason she’d picked it.
Rose was pretty impressed and her expression showed it. “Sounds pretty brilliant,” she said. “Do you use your own name or a band name?” She tried to imagine what kind of sound she had and thought she’d check it out. She was always looking for new music to listen to while on her way to work. Plus it seemed pretty cool that she was her own manager. Rose knew nothing of the entertainment industry, but she figured it was a good situation to be in.
“I go by my last name. Tinuviel. It means… nightingale in the language of my Dreams.” A very appropriate name, from a realm where names are earned, rather than simply given.
“It’s beautiful.” Rose smiled, tucking the name away so she could look it up when she got home. “What kind of language do you speak in your dreams?” Rose knew that the answer might not be on she recognized, as there were new languages appearing or ones no one had ever heard of before.
“Several variants of Elvish,” Luthien replied, pulling back her hair to reveal her ears. “An ancient language of Men, and one dialect of Dwarvish. And the language of song, of course. The Universal language.”
Rose’s mouth dropped open in surprise as she showed her her ears. Elvish...meant… “You’re an Elf?” Rose closed her mouth, not wanting to appear rude and cleared her throat. “Those had to be some dreams! Were they strange to have?” She wondered what it was like to be human here and slowly start to turn into an elf.
“They were… marvelous! Imagine the universe built upon a song, and a kingdom underground, with a grand, magical fortress above. I was born before the sun and moon existed, when the only light aside from hearth or torch were the stars above. My father was the king of that Kingdom, and my mother a maiar, a spirit not unlike an angel or demigod.”
Well that was quite a description and Rose showed a sense of overwhelming awe at it. “Those sound...like some intense things to dream.” It seemed almost too majestic, too mythical for Rose to completely understand.
“Well I’ll let you be with your family,” she said with a smile. “But I’ll definitely check out your music! You’re on the network, yeah? I’ll try and find you once I listen!”
“I am, and thank you.”
