Klaus was well on his way to getting his gallery up and running. He had the space, had a few artists lined up. He still needed to figure out exactly how to make an interactive section work, where people who couldn’t see could still enjoy art. It was an idea he had come up with recently when meeting a blind man at a bar. It was something new for him, but Klaus always liked a challenge.
Today however, he was scouting out artists. He didn’t have nearly enough for his opening yet. The walls of his gallery would be covered with the best pieces of art he could find. But first, coffee.
Klaus walked into Baxter’s Bakery looking over the selection. What the hell was a sparkling latte? Not something he had any desire in trying, that was certain. Once it was his turn he smiled at the pretty blonde behind the counter. “I’ll take a black coffee,” he told the woman that famous Niklaus Mikaelson smirk on his face. He didn’t particularly enjoy it black, but he would prefer to add the milk himself. No sweetener necessary.
The difference between Baxter’s and Starbucks were the customers. There was always that one arsehole that needed to be a prick about their order, but majority of the time, the customers here kept their orders simple and treated you like a human being instead of a slave to their coffee desires.
Plus, this one was cute.
“Interest you in a scone today? Pumpkin and they’re delicious!” She leaned towards him, as if telling him an important secret. “I made them myself.” She gave him a cheeky grin, moving back to pour the coffee.
Klaus never saw the intrigue of the whole pumpkin flavored thing. Why people went crazy for pumpkin spice he had no idea. However, who was he to turn down a pretty lady? Especially if she made them herself. That would just be plain rude. Not that Klaus wasn’t rude. He certainly had a temper, but only when it was called for. The woman was giving him no reason to be an ass.
“You know,” Klaus began. “I never understood the whole pumpkin craze. But if you made them I suppose I have to try one,” he grinned at her.
Rose couldn’t help but laugh as she handed him the coffee cup, turning around to get one of the scones. “It’s that time of the year mate! If it’s not pumpkin, then you’re not celebrating it!” She grinned, placing the pastry in a white bag and handing it to him. “Here, on the house. If I getcha hooked on the pumpkin craze, you can buy the next one.” She typed out the coffee on the register. “That’ll be $2.50 please!”
Well hey, free scone. Pumpkin flavored or not, Niklaus was certainly getting a good deal. Although he did give her five dollars for the coffee. “Keep the change,” he smirked. A 100% tip. Probably covered the cost of the scone anyway. But that’s what happened when you got good service.
“I’ll keep you posted,” he added in reference to how he liked the scone. With that he took his coffee and scone to one of the empty tables. The original plan had been to drink it on the go, but not anymore.
“Cheers!” Rose’s smile lit up at the tip and she watched as he took a seat at one of the tables before turning to the next customer in line. “What can I getcha mate?”
*** As the line started to die down, Rose switched with another worker, grabbing a damp dish towel to wander around the tables and clean up the messes from the other people. She saw that Pumpkin Spice was still around and made her way over, grinning as she did.
“So, what did ya think?” she asked, moving to wipe down one of the tables. “Do you think you’ve been persuaded to the dark side?”
Honestly, Klaus still wasn’t a fan. Pumpkin just wasn’t his thing. Still, he did eat the whole thing. He was still sitting at the table though, enjoying his coffee when the barista approached.
“Well,” he began taking another sip. “It wasn’t

Rose couldn’t help but laugh, a shrug of her shoulders as she took his empty plate, only a few crumbs left on it. “Cheers mate! What is it you do prefer? Maybe I can make something special for trying this rubbish.” She nodded towards the plate, a grin on her face.
“Need a refill of the coffee as well? On the house.”
Klaus just smirked. He clearly came at the right time, to the right barista. She was friendly, sweet. Almost lit up the whole bakery with that laugh. “I’ve always been a fan of cranberry scones,” he commented. “But you don’t have to do that.” Or the refill for that matter. Niklaus didn’t want to take advantage of her kindness.
“Oooh, I’ve done those before! No problem, I’m sure I can get some going. They sell fairly well so it’s a win win!” She grinned, thinking if she’d have to check in with Audrey to see if it would be alright. Fall was quickly coming to a close so now was the chance to do raspberry scones while they were still in season. “Lemme know the next time you might be around and I’ll do ‘em. Even if you can’t swing by I’ll save ya one!” She gave him a wink as she walked back to the counter, depositing the plate in the dirty dishes tub and grabbing a pot of coffee.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you around before. Not your usual haunt?” She poured some more into his cup, standing with her hand on her hip as she looked down at him.
“I don’t have one,” a regular place that was. “Usually just go wherever is convenient,” he shrugged. However, if he was going to get this kind of service? He was going to have to rethink that policy.
“Looks like I am going to have to change that,” he commented with a smirk. “Especially if beautiful baristas are going to give me special treatment.”
“Well hopefully you’ll find Baxter’s becomes a convenient spot for ya,” she said, returning his smirk with her own flirty smile. It was probably the best thing about Baxter’s, the way it created a relationship with its patrons. Since Rose was fairly new to the establishment, she was excited that she might have her very own customer that she could look forward to seeing.
“Don’t go around telling everyone about that special treatment though, yeah? Don’t want everyone requesting special things from me! But I wouldn’t mind doing it for you. That is, if I think I’d see you again!”
He had a feeling that he just might, find it a convenient spot that was. “Oh, I can keep a secret, love,” he replied with a grin. However, now that his food was done as well as his coffee he really should get going. Things to do, places to be and all that. “It was a pleasure meeting you,” he said as he stood up from the table glancing at her name tag. “Rose.”
She couldn’t help but grin back, always happy to make a new friend. “Right, raspberry scones for my new favorite customer…?” She raised an eyebrow and tilted her head to the side, as if inviting him to share his name as well. It was the only bad part about wearing a name badge; everyone knew her name but she rarely got to find out the names of her customers.
“Call me Klaus,” he replied clearly picking up on the hint. “See you around.” He would make sure of it. With that he made his exit. </lj-cut>
