Freya really wasn’t wanting to go more into detail about the dreams, which probably meant the texts she had sent that morning had been a mistake because it wasn’t like she was going to lie about them. But given Klaus’ current state of being overprotective because of her supposed death, and then deciding she was done waiting for Kol and Rebekah to come to her about the dreams (plus more research into the likelihood of changing or in her case gaining magical abilities)... well, it had been necessary.
That and the crushing weight of isolation. Despite being hungover that morning, she had needed to reach out to her siblings. And this week’s schedule of drinks with Klaus, dinner with Finn, seeing Kol and Mareena on Wednesday and a sister day with Rebekah on Friday was definitely needed.
Arriving at the chosen bar, Freya found an open spot where Klaus would be able to join her. While she waited, she ordered a glass of wine and started going through her emails on her phone, noticing a response from a local refugee agency in Santa Ana that she had set her CV to - interview on Thursday which required a response.
Klaus had gotten two unsettling pieces of dream information today. Neither of which came from his own dreams. One was from Marcel who he had apparently raised in the dreams. The other was from Freya. While he was relieved that his sister was alive, he didn’t like that Esther had just traded her. Like her life didn’t matter. While he expected nothing less from their dear parents it still pissed him off.
Klaus entered the bar spotting his sister right away. “Hey,” he greeted. Normally seeing his sister would make him smile. But with everything going on? There wasn’t much of a chance for a smile today. He slid onto the stool next to her ordering himself a scotch. “Are you alright?” He knew how the dreams could affect someone. He had experienced it for himself. So before getting into his questions, checking on his sister’s well being was enough.
Finishing up the reply email, Freya was just putting her phone away when Klaus entered and sat down next to her. Looking up, she gave a slight smile of greeting even though she didn’t really feel it. Mostly it was habit - besides, she was going to need to at least ensure Finn didn’t pick up that something was troubling her when she met up with him for dinner, so she might as well try to at least appear relatively normal.
“Yeah. I mean, I had come to terms with my fate before… but yeah.”
It was awkward and she wasn’t actually good at admitting when she wasn’t okay. The only reason Elijah knew she was far from it was she had been ungodly drunk and thus all of those well placed walls had lowered and she’d been more forthcoming.
“It’s just…. Very disconcerting.” Okay yeah, that was an understatement but it was what it was.
“Your new fate doesn’t sound much better than death,” he commented. Granted he would rather dream about growing up with anyone other than Esther and Mikael, but Freya had mentioned a deal with the devil and being a slave to said devil. Apparently that was Esther’s sister. Which had to mean Aunt Dahlia. As far Klaus knew Esther didn’t have any other siblings.
“So Esther traded you to Aunt Dahlia?” It made sense if it were true. Given how the dreams seemed to parallel their actual lives. Klaus knew Freya had stayed with Dahlia when he was a baby. Not because he remembered it of course, but it had been talked about in later years. And then there was the fact that she lived with Dahlia while in college. It wasn’t exactly growing up with the woman, but still the parallels were there.
As far as Freya was concerned, death would be better. But she also knew that saying as such would lead to more questions, ones she wasn’t wanting to get into all over again.
“Basically. Think Mother Gothel, but more evil.”
Not only was it hell because Dahlia was the devil and using her as nothing more than a slave, linking them to use Freya’s magic to make herself stronger and more powerful, to make a new connective type of magic. Her words in her head, the only one she could rely on.
“That she did, what’s trading one child when you can have more of them?”
Still, Freya was all too familiar with the fact that the dreams seemed to parallel their real lives. If she were honest, Dahlia’s manipulations had started since she first had to stay with the woman while sick. Her mother didn’t want to deal with her while she was sick. Always side comments whenever she did errands for the woman, or when she was a chaperone on some class trip or the like as she would do those for Freya instead of her mother - there were six other children after all.
But between Elijah’s comments about how their parents were worse in the dreams and knowing Dahlia in this life and just the small bits she had seen with Dahlia in the dreams… it was definitely going to be hell dealing with these dreams.
“Mother who?” Was this reference Niklaus was supposed to know, because he wasn’t catching it. However, the fact that Freya was using words like evil and devil wasn’t promising. Klaus couldn’t help but frown at the thought of Freya being separated from them.
“If it helps, Esther wasn’t the best mother anyway.” At least to Niklaus. The rest of the siblings? Well that was a different story. However he was sure that wasn’t all that shocking for Freya to hear.
“Right. Villain from the Disney movie Tangled. Sorry.” Given her work with women and children, it wasn’t uncommon that Disney movies or similar were played at an office for the younger children who weren’t old enough for youth programs or somewhere to keep them occupied while their mothers or parents were working on paperwork. And now Klaus had another word to associate with Dahlia along with evil and devil - villain.
“So I’ve heard.” No, it didn’t shock Freya in the least. True, both Esther and Mikael had been good parents for her and Finn in the dreams, happy…. But that obviously changed from what she had been told.
Klaus just raised a brow at Freya. Did she really expect him to know a Disney movie? However, he was making a mental note to check it out. He wanted to see just what Freya was comparing Dahlia to. The fact that Dahlia was a villain in the dreams did make him wonder how she had treated Freya in real life. Considering how much he hated talking about his past, he wasn’t going to push Freya to do the same. As much as he hated secrets amongst his siblings, he could understand while some parts of the past were best left alone. If Freya wanted to confide in him she would. When she was ready. “Tangled,” Klaus repeated taking a sip of his drink. “Right ,then.”
Another sip before his next sentence. “Marcel messaged me today. He’s had dreams. About us.” Klaus raising him specifically which was just odd as hell if you asked Niklaus.
It wasn’t even that Freya really expected Klaus to know a Disney movie, however it was just the first parallel she could think of. However, she was perfectly fine if the assumption of Dahlia was just her horribleness was related to the dreams. It wasn’t like she was wanting to talk about her past now that she had regained her sense of balance that had been lost the day before when the dream had thrown her. Thankfully the conversation moved though away from Dahlia and what could go into the real world past and onto…
Marcel dreaming? Okay then.
“Oh?” Because that was unexpected and she wasn’t quite sure how that could go given the complicated dynamic between Klaus and Marcel here.
“Yeah,” Klaus said finishing off his drink and immediately motioning for another. “Seems as though it was the time for dreams. I had more as well.” About becoming a hybrid. However he wasn’t quite ready to share that with Freya. She wasn’t in their lives at that point. Off with Dahlia he assumed. He didn’t want to confuse her with the details of what he and the rest of his siblings were.
“I think Marcel is going to stay awhile.” At least longer than he originally planned.
Freya might be off with Dahlia somewhere in the dreams, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to worry about her siblings and what it was they went through in the dreams. Just because she couldn’t be there for them in the dreams didn’t mean she couldn’t try to be there in the real world.
“Are you okay in them?” Because she would worry, she would always worry. She had made a vow to protect each of her siblings before they’d even been born here, and she had done the same in the dreams - at least with Finn and Elijah as she’d been taken before Elijah had been born.
“Is he? Well. That should be interesting.”
“I’m fine.” Triggering the werewolf gene, making him a hybrid, that had been painful. And he had felt that pain when he woke up. But it had passed. Just as Freya didn’t want to worry him, he didn’t want to worry her either. Especially now that everything was fine again.
“Yeah,” he agreed as the bartender brought over his next drink. Klaus took a sip before speaking again. “I think I might stay a while too.” There was no point in returning to New Orleans. Not with Marcel here. And if he was being honest he wanted to see how the dreams would play out. Needed to know what was next.
Dream injuries weren’t something that Freya had experience with. She’d heard about it, of course. But so far, it was just something that was of a more theoretical nature. More believable as she’d seen the vampire thing and had her own dreams now to understand how intense the emotional bleedover could be. But no injuries. So she nodded some as she took a sip of her drink.
Though Freya supposed it wasn’t that shocking that Klaus might decide to stick around.
“I’ve been considering it as well. I have an interview on Thursday in Santa Ana actually.” It had never been something she was completely written off, but after fourteen years abroad? It still felt strange to actually be interviewing for something where she had once grown up.
Klaus couldn’t help but smile at her comment. It would be nice to have his sister around. “That might just be the best news I heard all day.” It was a tie between that and the fact that Freya wasn’t dead in the dreams. That settled it then. If Freya was staying so was he. How could he not? Especially combined with everything out.
“Now I just have to figure out a place to live,” Klaus mused with another drink. Staying with Kol was convenient and all, but that had always just been a temporary arrangement. As much as he loved his brother and his niece, living with a baby wasn’t exactly ideal for the bachelor.
Shaking her head with a smile, Freya took a sip of wine. After all, she wouldn’t say her dreams were good news but it gave Klaus peace of mind. And it wasn’t like she could change them. Nor could she deny that she’d been mulling over staying for weeks now even though nothing had been concrete. “The cards seem to be falling as such.”
As for the comment on where to live? That was more complicated. There was of course specific dates when leases opened, figuring out finances. She knew that if she stayed, Elijah had said she could stay in his apartment since he was moving but even so, it may just be until she could find something of her own.
“That is the tricky part. Especially given living costs in the area. Elijah offered me his apartment since he’s moving in with Ezio so there’s that option if you want.”
Going from one sibling’s home to another wasn’t exactly what Klaus had in mind. He still felt as though he needed to prove to his family that he could build something on his own. Without them or the Mikaelson name. However, if he was going to start up a new gallery here, he needed to save his money. Temporarily staying with Freya at Elijah’s place wasn’t the worst thing in the world. At least for a temporary solution.
“That’s certainly something to think about,” Klaus finally replied. And he would seriously consider it. It did seem like the most logical option for the moment.
