When Freya had decided to come back to Orange County because of the supposed family crisis, she really hadn’t known what to expect. And it seemed that particular drama was one of the more simple ones. Oh sure, the parents still refused to listen to anyone but their own opinions and it was enough to give her a migraine. Still, that was one of the more normal types of drama going on.
Then there was the whole Elijah as a vampire thing which she had accepted and it wasn’t like she saw him any differently but it was far more than one might anticipate when coming home from overseas. Her being dead in his dreams was something she was doing her best to ignore because it wasn’t like she could change that. Especially as Klaus had started dreaming as well and had taken to following her to keep tabs on her thanks to her being dead in the dreams. Add in clashing personalities and it was almost like maybe she should have stayed overseas.
Only Freya knew she could never stay away if she was concerned about a serious crisis. Yes said crisis ended up being hysterics and overreacting and bigotry, but it had gotten her home. And being home was nice in its own way, drama and all, even if she knew she’d eventually pack up again to return to work. It was her nature, both being busy with different projects as well as being on the move.
At the moment, Freya had finished up her early morning yoga session (one of the few times she did just stop and have a sense of serenity and calmness) and had stopped in at a local coffee shop to check her emails, as well as see if there were any contract positions open that she could submit her CV for. Once her order was picked up, Freya went to an empty table and set up her laptop so that she could do as she had planned with emails and job searching.
Finn hadn’t actually had any plans to move back to Orange County, but when Esther had told him that, not one but, three of his siblings had moved back to Orange County, he had felt that it was time that he did too. Living in Paris indefinitely had never been the long term plan, but it had simply been the easiest way for him to oversee one branch of one of Esther’s nonprofits. And since there was a branch in Orange County as well, it had been an easy enough move.
He had decided not to tell his siblings just yet that he was moving back, because he had wanted to surprise them. While he had spoken to them each at various times and had seen Freya, Elijah and Klaus a few times over the last few years, he hadn’t seen Kol or Rebekah since he had left and didn’t think telling any of them over the phone would have the right effect.
With Esther’s help, he had acquired a condo before leaving France so upon arriving back in town earlier that morning, he’d already had a place to go before deciding to head over to the family home to see his parents. After such a long flight though, he needed a little caffeine if he was going to survive a visit with his father so he had stopped into a coffee shop and headed straight towards the line.
It was merely timing that had Freya look up when she did. She’d just finished going through her emails, replying to contacts about different projects that she had technically left but opinions were needed, looking up locations for the non-profit she was helping Percy with. But that was the funny thing about timing, just right and you suddenly see someone you were not expecting to see.
“Finn?”
Really, her mind must be playing tricks on her. There was no way that Finn had also come back to Orange County. True, as of now she was still convinced she was only staying for the month or so and Klaus was just regrouping after what he had told her at the bar, but still. All Mikaelson siblings in one location at the same time? That was extremely rare.
The last thing Finn had expected, when he’d stopped into the coffee shop, was for someone to recognize him, but in this case, he knew that voice right away and turned, giving his older sister a big smile, “Freya.” He turned away from his original goal and moved between the table until he was at Freya’s table, “I suppose this is the part where I say, surprise.” This wasn’t how he had pictured seeing his sister again, but then again, did it really matter how their reunion happened?
And it was her brother. Smiling, Freya stood up and hugged Finn before pulling away to look at him. He looked well, which was good. It had been easier to see him in Paris in the years he’d been there as opposed to see the others so she’d been able to see him more than the others. Still, the last time they had spoken, there had been no talk about coming back to Orange County.
“I guess so! What brings you back? When did you get back?”
All thought about looking for a new posting was forgotten at present.
Finn had always been closest to Freya and Elijah, so having at least one of them close by while he had been in Paris had been nice and had made him feel a little less alone out there than he would have had he had no family at all there.
After returning the hug, Finn took the seat across from the one Freya had been sitting in a moment ago, “I actually just got in this morning. Mother told me that you and Nik had moved back and I honestly couldn’t see a good reason to stay all the way in Paris when the rest of you were here. I can do the same job here as I was doing there, so it only made sense.” If he had had any doubts about moving back, seeing Freya erased them, “And what brought you back here? Mother didn’t go into much detail.”
Hug broken, Freya took her seat as Finn took his and then rolled her eyes as she was told what Esther had told Finn.
“I think she’s jumping to conclusions. I haven’t made any decisions as it depends on where I get a placement for work and I probably don’t want to know how she knows Klaus is even in the area since I’m sure he hasn’t gone to see them yet.” As far as she knew, she was the only one who knew the real reason Klaus had even come back to Orange County to regroup. Though given her mother, overreacting and exaggerating were her specialties so she supposed she couldn’t be surprised.
“That said, I have been looking at potential openings in the area as well as my usual searches and am currently helping a friend with a non profit while here so I’ll be around for a bit. Though you showing up is more incentive to find a local placement.” Even if it went against every part of her that said her highest risk of running into Dahlia was here. Things had been easier to avoid overseas.
“As for what brought me back? Well, a month of calls about a supposed family crisis that was brought on by closed mindedness and bigotry and not having anything lined up.” And if there was a major crisis, Freya would be there to try and fix it even if this was something she was unable to fix. Just like she couldn’t fix the dreams for her siblings.
“You know our parents. I’ve always been under the impression that father has eyes everywhere.” It wouldn't surprise Finn in the least if Mikael had had people watching them on occasion. “When does this family not have a crisis? Which one was it this time?” If he were completely honest, family crises were one of the reasons he’d wanted to leave Orange County in the first place. One simply couldn’t be expected to stay sane with everything that crept up within their family.
“Or gossipy friends who have seen him around and are quick to make assumptions.” Because that was the world they lived in thanks to their parents. Though he did raise a very important question, when wasn’t there something that was going on. “Which is why the fact I kept getting calls and messages about it for a month made me worry it was something serious.” Freya was far too familiar with their mother’s antics. “I feel they misjudged where I would stand on the matter as once again, it’s a crisis of their own making because the happiness of their children doesn’t matter in the face of maintaining a proper image.”
“That is also a definite possibility,” Finn really wouldn’t put anything past their parents, but they did know quite a few people in and around Orange County, so it was entirely possible that someone had simply seen Klaus and told Esther and Mikael. “I don’t understand why they continue to think that we will side with them if they are obviously wrong.” Finn would only side with their parents if he knew for a fact that they were actually right about whatever the current “crisis” was.
“And more likely. We’re not living in House of Cards or whatever.” It was possible they’d want to make sure that their children weren’t ‘ruining the family name’, but dreams or not, this was the real world and not some scripted drama, so gossipy friends who saw the long lost son return? Definitely something to mention. “No idea. Either way, it’s of their own making and even though they were probably expecting me to talk sense into the others, it’s been them I’ve been trying to reason with, with expected results of nothing.” And all the more proof that they didn’t actually pay attention to the work she did, just the prestige of the different organizations she got contracts with.
“But enough of that. I can’t believe you’re actually here.” She’d managed to get a placement in Paris with the UN working with refugees a few years back so that had been nice to have her brother so close by, but she hadn’t expected Finn to show up in Orange County despite what he had told her.
“Perhaps I’ll try my hand at talking some sense into them next time there’s a crisis,” If there was anyone that Esther listened to at least, it was Finn. Sometimes. He didn’t know how it had turned out that he was closest to their mother while Freya was closest to their father, but Finn certainly didn’t mind, because there was only so much time Finn could spend with or talking to their father. He had long thought that his father wasn’t too happy that he had gone into business of helping Esther with her various projects instead of him.
“I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure at first if I was making the right decision. I almost decided to stay in Paris.” Sitting there across from Freya, he knew that he had made the right decision now, “But ultimately, I didn’t think I could pass up this chance to see everyone in the same place.”
“Good luck with that.” Because goodness knew that Finn would need it if he ever got dragged into the next mess. Though Freya was fairly certain that she was using up her good will in this latest crisis. She didn't mind though. “I'm pretty sure we're the only two who will even still speak to them.” And even that was debatable.
“I don't blame you. I already have a headache.” Which admittedly went beyond the typical issues and dealt with the dreams Elijah and Klaus had and how she didn't know how to help them. All of which was on top of the regular drama. “But it is the rare opportunity that shouldn't be passed up.”
“Speaking of our parents, I should probably get over there. You know how our father hates to be kept waiting,” While Finn would have preferred to stay there with Freya, he knew he had to go see their parents soon since they were expecting him, “Once I’m fully settled into my place, I’ll have you and the others over though.” Perhaps not all at the same time right away, but he would certainly want to have Freya and Elijah over together sooner rather than later.
“Probably a good idea. I'd offer to come with you, but I have errands to run. But yes, that sounds great.” Smiling, Freya got up to hug Finn again before he left. Definitely a good start to the day in her opinion.
