Tessa was in the kitchen, finishing off making a round of tea for them all while the other two girls set up in the living room. She’d bought in all the supplies Capable had said they might need to experiment with and the girls were sorting through them at the table. “I bought us some really tasty biscuits to go with our tea, is that ok with everyone?” she asked. The kitchen, living and dining rooms were all one really, a big open plan space which made conversation in the area a lot easier.
“Great in my book,” Irisa called back, separating the different sorts of fabric into piles. A couple of different patterns and textures were in the mix and Irisa was taking a little bit of time to feel each one as she put them into piles while she sat next to Capable.
“That sounds lovely” Capable added with a smile, before watching Irisa she said to the younger girl, “Some of these fabrics are so beautiful, the children will love the bright colors” Tessa’s home was lovely and it was nice to see the tell tale signs of the three people who lived there.
Tessa smiled again as she heard the two girls chatting. She'd loved the idea the moment she’d heard it, and what better way than to let Capable’s new skills shine than to have a day dedicated to it. Putting the biscuit tin away, Tessa came into the front room with a tray, perfectly laid out with teapot, China cups and a plate of fancy biscuits. She placed it on a side table to brew before settling down next to Capable. “This all looks amazing, I can't tell you how excited I am!” she clapped her hands and grinned at Capable.
“They're going to make puppets that can attract a hive of bees,” Irisa remarked in reply to Capable. “Are we sure there’s not more to add to the health and safety report for this,” she joked dryly, holding up a red, yellow and purple striped piece of fabric that looked like it should be in a clown costume.
Capable found it amusing that Tessa had such a perfect tea service, she wondered if it was Will’s influence since she knew he was the British one, where tea was a thing apparently. Capable smiled brightly with a little blush when Tessa’s attention went to her, she was glad she could use the course in such a way. She had been hoping she would be able to bring something to the store.
She laughed lightly at Irisa’s joke, “I think we will be safe” she said, “Bright colours are good for children and adults really. They make people happy”
Tessa had acquired a proper tea set after the Dreams and of course, after some hints from Will, but she loved it now. She took great joy in using it when they were entertaining guests. “It's a great idea, you're just not used to seeing so many colours,” she picked up another colourful swatch of material and no waved it at Irisa playfully before turning to Capable “So Great Teacher, where do we start?”
Irisa couldn't help but laugh and wave away the fabric Tessa waved in her face. She finished separating the last of the fabric in front of her while listening to Capable talk about the process.
Sometimes Capable had to pinch herself that this was her life now, she had an amazing job, wonderful friends and a girlfriend who loved her. It was so very different to how she’d lived in the cult she’d been brought up in and she was so happy she couldn’t not smile.
She talked through the process of making simple puppets, stopping to make sure Tessa and Irisa were keeping up with her and ensure she wasn’t going too fast.
Tessa followed the instructions as diligently as she could, deciding to make a brightly coloured angel with her puppet. It wasn't perfect by any means but it was recognisable for what it was and she held it up for Capable to have a look at.
Irisa on the other hand seemed to get more of the materials stuck to her than each other. With more glue on her hands than the material, she tried to carefully hold up the attempt at a puppet which looked more like Sid the Sloth from Ice Age. She looked up a little helplessly, unable to explain exactly what had happened. “What can I say? I'm better at destroying stuff than making it,” she shrugged.
“That’s lovely, well done” Capable said, smiling as Tessa showed her the Angel, it was very fitting.
“It’s very unique” Capable said, “But still cute in a way. You made it so you should be very proud” Somehow coming from Capable it didn’t sound at all condescending, but truly honest.
“Thank you,” Tessa smiled and looked at her puppet, picking a couple of bits of fluff off her puppet before looking at Irisa’s sympathetically. “Maybe yours can be the devil to my angel,” she suggested with a grin. She moved her puppet in front of Irisa’s and bashed it playfully at which point one of Irisa’s puppet’s eyes fell off. Pressing her lips together as she looked down at the offending item, then looking up at Irisa as a tense moment passed.
Irisa glared down at the eye. Then looked up at Tessa from under her lashes and raising her eyebrow. “Really?” she asked flatly, making Tessa erupt in laughter.
Capable couldn’t help laughing too, it was the way Irisa looked at Tessa. She had such incredible facial expressions that you couldn’t help react to them. “Aww, maybe your next one will be a little more successful”
Tessa chuckled and got up to pour the tea and bring it and the biscuits over for them all.
Irisa harrumphed and dropped her attempt at a puppet on the table in front of her. “Oh I doubt it,” she sighed and slumped a little as she looked at Tessa’s angel. “I’ve never been great at arts and crafts,” she shrugged. She moved to tuck some hair behind her ear, only to find her hair sticking to her fingers. “What the…” she asked, pulling her hand away from her hair in disbelief.
“We all have different strengths, I could never be intimidating but you are very good at that” Capable said trying to cheer her up before gasping, “Oh dear. You have glue on your hand” she picked up a cloth and retrieved a little bottle from her bag, pouring it onto the cloth before taking Irisa’s hand and wiping it.
Tessa couldn’t help but chuckle as she placed the cup in front of Irisa along with the plate of biscuits. “Help yourself to some biscuits Irisa,” she said, sitting down again. “How would you feel about being an overseer? So Capable and I could do the demonstration and then you could move around the room, checking everyone’s ok and helping out where necessary, what do you think?” she asked.
Irisa looked skeptically towards Capable. “What do you think?”
“If that’s okay with you I think it’s a lovely idea” Capable said, she didn’t want her to think she was being pushed out or sidelined. But she did want Irisa to be comfortable in what she was doing.
“Of course, it’ll be fine. I think you’ll be very good at that,” Tessa nodded resolutely, dunking a biscuit in her tea before eating it.
“Ok, sounds good,” Irisa agreed, reaching for a biscuit. “I prefer being on my feet anyway,” she told them with a relieved smile. God knows she didn’t want kids laughing at her rubbish crafting skills. She’d have to remember to leave her gun at home.
