Pi Day really was one of Virgil’s favourite not-actually-a-holiday holidays. There was nothing better than having an excuse to eat all the pie he could possibly want. It was exciting to know other people who loved the holiday as much as he did - or, from how it sounded, even more. He’d only met Tink a couple of times when he’d had to run some errands for Stark Industries, but she seemed like a nice girl and he wouldn’t be opposed to being friends with her.
“Hey Tink, you around?” he called. He really hoped she wasn’t under the counter.
Tink heard the bell on the door chime as it opened. Someone came into the shop--customer? Or Virgil? She wasn’t sure, so she put away the tools she’d been using in the back, and dusted her hands on her apron (one of those industrial strength, leather kinds) as she headed to the front.
“Hey!” She said, grinning brightly, as she came through the curtain that separated the back room from the front. “Please tell me you’re here for pie.”
“You know it,” Virgil said, pleased. “Take me to your flaky overlord.”
Tink removed the hefty, leather apron and draped it over a chair behind the register. She was wearing a thin, green hoodie over a pair of jeans. Very Tink. Not like the disaster she had on on Valentine's. (Ugh, pink.)
“Come on back,” she said, waving him around the counter. The place was quiet, like always. “My brothers outdid themselves yesterday. I uh…” she went rather pink. “I wasn't home to help them bake last night.”
The last third of the pie was in the fridge. Tink pulled it out, unwrapped the seran wrap, and offered Vigil a fork.
Virgil followed her into the back room, not missing the blush that crossed Tink’s features. “Oh yeah?” Virgil asked. “You have a hot date or something?” He took the fork from Tink, and leaned up against the counter as she got the pie ready.
“Kinda?” Tink’s grin and blush were quite obvious as she hopped up onto the counter to sit next to him while he ate. “I mean, we’re dating. And I think he’s really hot.” (Red cheeks now.) “So, I guess so? A hot date on pi day is pretty much the nerdiest thing ever. And kinda the best.”
“That’s great!” Virgil exclaimed, genuinely pleased for Tink. “So, you and your homeboy been seeing each other long?” he asked.
“Um… we’ve been friends for a while. But our first… I guess date? We’re just dating. Really.” She grinned brightly, obviously very besotted by the gentleman. “It was my birthday. February 25th.” It hadn’t been very long since their first kiss. Tink was trying not to put the cart before the horse, really. She was smitten, sure. But was he? Was she going overboard? She didn’t have a lot of experience to compare this.
“A birthday get together followed by a first date?” Virgil asked, sliding into a seat. He was going to be around for a while. “You gotta spill. Tell me all about it.”
Tink wasn’t all that great at talking about herself. Her inventions? Sure. But her personal life? That was a bit more awkward. And she was absolutely rusty at talking about her romance life because up until now, she’d never really had one. A few dates here and there, a couple of one night stands… nothing big. Dating Frank was pretty much the most amazing thing ever.
She explained how Frank took her out dress shopping and to a fancy fundraiser event on her birthday, and how they kissed that night. How it made her feel. How excited she was, and how it still made her stomach twist into knots just thinking about it. And how they use puns together all the time, and how he makes her laugh, and how he makes her feel pretty.
Then, bright red around her face, she stopped talking. She lifted her hands to press her cool fingers against her burning cheeks. “I feel so silly!”
“Naw girlfriend, you got nothing to feel silly about. I get it,” Virgil said, pleased. After all, he and Richie had recently taking their friendship to the next level. He felt like he had even less reason to feel giddy about it, given that they’d practically been glued at the hip since kindergarten. “He sounds like a great guy. Hopefully he’ll appreciate your bros pie as much as I’m planning on.” He frowned. “I mean, unless he’s already got a bite.’
“No, he and I went out for pie last night,” Tink admitted, flipping her hands over to press the other sides of her fingers against her burning cheeks. “But I’m sure I’ll make more pie in future that he’ll get to try.” She cleared her throat. That totally wasn’t a euphemism for anything, even though it sounded kinda dirty. Then she gave him a smile. “Soooooo… do you have someone you’re sharing pie with?”
Virgil grinned a little lopsidedly. “Yeah,” he said. “My boyfriend,” it should probably be strange how not strange it was to substitute ‘best friend’ for ‘boyfriend,’ “Richie and I ate until we practically burst yesterday. It was dope. Though we didn’t eat as much as we did of the great Pi Day of ‘15.”
Tink was really happy for Virgil. He was a good guy, and deserved a good partner. This was the first she’d heard of the guy, so she assumed it was relatively new? Kind of like she and Frank were new. But she and Frank weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend, so maybe it was older than her dating Frank. She grinned brightly as she looked over at him. “What happened on the great Pi Day of ‘15?”
“We ate so much pie we were sick,” Virgil said, grinning. “And not in a good way. But you know, 3/14/15, it’s not like we couldn’t go all out.”
“Very very true.” Tink said, grinning. “My brothers and I stayed up all night playing Warcraft. We all celebrate in our own ways.” She took a bite of the pie, but paused when she heard the bell on the front door chime. She sighed. “I should probably get back to work.”
