Vanessa always enjoyed Tessa’s company and found her to be a very calm and intelligent woman. Her relationship status had been a surprise yet when watching her with Will or Jem it made perfect sense, the three of them fit perfectly together. It was lovely to witness the love between them all.
Entering the store she greeted Capable who told her to go through to the office which Vanessa did, after handing over a hot drink of course. Knocking she entered and smiled, “Is this a bad time?” she asked.
Tessa was filing some invoices ready to take to her accountant at the end of the month and looked up from the drawer she was closing. Smiling at seeing her friend, she shook her head. “Oh no, not at all. Just doing some filing,” she told her, standing up straight. “Please come on in, how are you?”
Smiling Vanessa entered the room placing the drink she had brought for Tessa on the desk and pushing it forward, “I’m very well thank you. How about you?” she asked, hand briefly touching Tessa’s when she took the drink, “Dreams are weighing on you”
Tessa looked up at her friend with her mouth agape as she processed what she had said. “I...yes, how did you know?” she asked quietly, smile somewhat fading from her face as she sat down behind her desk.
Vanessa blushed a little, “Sorry” she said, “It's unintentional transference. Essentially I picked up your feelings through touch” Vanessa explained, as well as she could anyway. By embracing her powers here in the waking world she controlled and used them far more than her dream self.
“That’s ok, it just...took me by surprise is all,” Tessa gave her a little smile and shook her head as she warmed her hands around the hot drink. “It’s true, I have been...perturbed by my Dreams as of late,” she swallowed heavily. “I...I don’t remember if I’ve told you this but...in my Dreams I’m a Warlock. We have eternal life essentially, among other things,” she explained quietly with a little shrug.
“You’re worried that eternal life may bleed over and you’ll outlive those you love and care for?” Vanessa guessed, she couldn’t deny it had crossed Vanessa’s mind when it came to Dorian, with the painting here he would most likely age far slower than herself.
Tessa smiled softly at her friend. “It sounds like you have some experience with the sort of thing,” she said gently, tilting her head.
Nodding Vanessa said, “There’s a chance, just a small one, that Dorian may be immortal as well. It isn’t an easy thing to think about so I know a little of how you feel, though from the other side I guess you could say”
Tessa nodded thoughtfully, gazing off into space for a few seconds. “How are you both dealing with it?” she asked.
“Honestly, we don’t talk about it much. We’re both rather pragmatic people and perhaps there is a certain amount of burying our heads in the sand” she admitted.
“Hmm…Perhaps I should be more like that,” Tessa replied distantly before clearing her throat and sitting upright again. “Will came in joking about it the other day. I kind of fell apart thinking about it...I don’t want to be alone for all eternity while those I love pass away in front of me,” she admitted, eyes somewhat misting with tears.
“None of us know how long we have here or what if anything awaits us but that is why we have to cherish every moment we have” Vanessa said, laying a hand on one of Tessa’s. “We cannot stop our hearts from hurting by wrapping them up and protecting them from falling in love. I think that would hurt more”
Squeezing Vanessa’s hand in return, Tessa took a deep breath. “You’re right, I know you’re right, it’s just...difficult having the knowledge of how it feels before it happens. It makes me...hesitant about the future,” she admitted quietly.
“It may not be the case here” Vanessa said, “We’re assuming a lot. The dreams do give us a lot of things but not everything. You could be worrying for no reason. And if it does turn out to be the case then you are a strong woman Tessa, strong enough to take the rough times with the good ones”
Tessa blinked rapidly and looked up at the ceiling while her eyes cleared of tears somewhat. Looking back at Vanessa she gave her a watery smile as she nodded. “God I must look a mess now,” she gave a little laugh and reached down into her top drawer to pull a handkerchief out. She dabbed under her eyes and nose to collect herself. “Sorry, bet you weren't expecting that were you,” she grinned.
“Don’t be sorry” Vanessa said, “I would rather you share your worries with me than keep them bottled up to yourself. Talking sometimes helps even if it can’t always solve the problem”
“Thank you for listening, you're a very dear friend to me,” Tessa told her happily. “Now, let's turn this conversation to happier things,” she smiled, taking a sip of her drink.
