Who: Finn and Rey When: Backdated to December during the wish plot Where: Finn’s place What: Finn gets The Force! And kinda screws up. Rating/Warnings: PG Status: Complete.
“That's not how The Force works!” was echoing inside Finn's head; Han Solo's words to him in the dreams when Finn had mistaken what The Force actually did.
He was still staring at the refrigerator that had hurled itself halfway between his kitchen and living room. “I'm pretty sure that's how the Force works.” He said aloud to himself, as if somehow Han might also hear him. But he didn't sound certain. He knew Kylo had used it to freeze a blaster bolt mid air, so wasn't this similar?
He frowned. He was afraid to try again lest he put a hole in his house. All he'd try to do after moving his coffee cup to him was to try to open the fridge and pull the milk out - instead he'd kinda pulled the entire fridge.
Better call Rey. She was strong in the Force, so she'd demonstrated in the movies they'd seen. Maybe she could put it back.
He looked to where the rectangle of dust bunnies was where the fridge had been. Okay, he'd call her after he cleaned that up.
A few minutes later he was dialing her and waiting for her to pick up.
The funny part is, sometimes that was exactly how the Force worked. Of course, Rey didn’t fully understand that yet, but maybe eventually she would. She’d decided she needed to reach out to the other Jedi. Truly reach out to them, so she could learn how to control the power within her.
She picked up her phone, happy to hear from him. “Finn! Hello! How are you?”
“Hey Rey! Um...well…” he started, uncertainly, then changing his tone to as excited as he could muster. “You’d never guess what happened! Apparently, my wish came true and I got the Force!” Ta da!
“Really?” Rey sat straight up. “That’s amazing, Finn! I always thought you had it in you, at least a little bit. You’ve got a buzzy about you, you now.” He probably didn’t know but she didn’t know how else to describe it.
“I what now? Really? You thought that?” Okay that was news to him. Granted it had seemed kind of badass in the dreams and on screen he was capable of wielding a lightsaber so quickly and able to hold his own against Kylo. So Rey might have a point.
“Well,” he glanced at the fridge. “I've got a bit of a situation thanks to the Force.” He said, biting his lip and wincing as he said the next part. “I kinda maybe sorta moved my fridge. Into my living room.”
“You moved your fridge into your living room and that’s a bit of a situation?” Well, Rey was British so that sounded pretty normal for her. Just a bit of a situation. “So if your refrigerator was running and at least you caught it? Let me get dressed and I’ll be right over!”
“Ha. Ha.” Snarked Finn. He was relieved however when Rey offered to come over and help. Cuz Lord knows he needed it! “Thanks Rey, I really appreciate it.” He frowned at the face down fridge, which looked like someone had tossed it in a Kylo Ren like rage. Well, technically Kylo would have slashed it to bits with his crazy lightsaber. Finn was only capable of making it look like the fridge had gotten drunk and fallen over. “Maybe...maybe you could show me the ropes after we put this thing back?”
“Do you want me to bring you anything?” Rey hurriedly changed, rushing out the door with her phone still on her shoulder. “Just text me it, I’ve got to hang up so I can drive.”
She picked her speeder instead of her bike. She could skip over a lot of traffic by taking it. That, and it would be fun!
She ended up getting to Finn’s place sooner than expected, and was knocking on his door.
“No I'm good. I just need you.” He smiled into the phone before she hung up. If he needed anything that had gotten trashed inside the fridge he could just go food shopping. They both could, which could be fun considering how much Rey enjoyed food.
When Finn heard the sound of her speeder (he still couldn't believe the dreams had given her that. He'd never admit to being jealous) he was at the door by the time she knocked. Swinging it open he smiled sheepishly. “Hey. So uh, no telling Poe about this okay? I'll never hear the end of it.” He stepped aside to let her in.
“Oh, now I have to tell him all about it,” Rey grinned at him. “Because that’s something that we can never let you live down. I hope you realize that.” She gave him a quick hug then squeezed inside his flat to give it a look around. “Oh my god. I’m not sure your fridge is going to be running after this. I have tools on my speeder, I’ll get them if I need to repair it.”
She also wasn’t sure she had enough control of the Force to really move it, but she was going to try.
“Great,” Finn said under his breath rolling his eyes, returning the hug. Following her to the scene of his poor refrigerator's demise he watched her reaction and flushed in embarrassment. “That bad huh?” He stopped the question of 'you can fix my fridge?’ from coming out of his mouth, realizing this woman was a scavenger and could fix anything.
Rey could fix anything, and she would. As a scavanger that usually came with a price. “On one condition. Order take-out.”
She grinned at him, because of course that would be food!
Finn chuckled. “You have a deal. Now let’s move this bad boy and see what the damage is inside.” He wanted to see Rey really use the Force in person. He hadn’t really seen her do much and was genuinely curious. Plus, he didn’t know if this new ability of his was permanent or not so he might as well start learning.
Rey closed her eyes, reaching out with the Force. “I really...need to talk to Kanan or Ahsoka some time. I’ve just been… stubborn.”
It took some concentration, but the fridge lifted up. It made Rey excited - this was the heaviest thing she’d lifted yet. “I’ll set it down in the kitchen, and we’ll take a look at it before moving it back into the wall. Like normal people, mind.”
Finn was gaping. He watched in amazement as with extended hand and closed eyes Rey stood there and lifted the two-hundred pound refrigerator without moving a muscle. It drifted as if a cloud over into the kitchen where it touched down. Following her into the next room Finn gawked at it and then her.
“That was amazing!” he whooped. “You have to show me how to do that! I mean, not, with this because I’d screw it up again but I mean, something smaller. Like a mug or a rock or something.” He was babbling in his excitement, then abruptly stopped. “Oh man, I wonder how trashed it is inside.” And he made a face. Hesitantly he approached the fridge and carefully opened the door.
The pickle jar was right at the edge and rolled off the shelf - onto Finn’s foot. “OW!” He shouted and hopped back a step, rubbing his foot with a scowl. He looked back up into the dark depths of the fridge, and could just make out the carnage on the inside. He grabbed his smart phone and hit the flashlight app.
It was as he’d feared. Everything that had been on the inside of the door had been tossed about into the main compartment when the fridge fell over. Tupperware, a now open styrofoam container of chinese food, beer bottles, and condiments were in a chaotic pile. The milk mercifully hadn’t spilled open, but the eggs….oh the eggs had done the most damage. Their slime was covering most everything.
“Oh god, this’ll take forever to clean.” he moaned. “Maybe I’m better off not using the Force.” Now he was angry at himself for being so stupid. He should have stayed small, and then called Rey to show him the ropes, instead of trying to do it all on his own.
“It’s probably pretty trashed,” Rey said, smiling in delight at Finn’s babbling. She peered around him to see the damage inside the fridge, then picked up the pickle jar. It didn’t look expired, and she opened it and sniffed, then took out a pickle to chew on.
“It’s not so bad. Though I think using the Force casually was a bit of a no-no.” She put the jar down. “Let's roll up our sleeves, Finn. I’ve cleaned up worse!”
Finn wasn't so sure he'd cleaned up worse, unless boot camp for the Navy SEALs counted.
It took them an hour and change to thoroughly clean out the refrigerator. Finn noticed that Rey was as meticulous about making sure every millimeter was scrubbed clean as he was. Between her being a mechanic here and a scavenger in the Dreams this came as no surprise to him, and it gave him comfort to know he wasn't alone in such behavior, his also born out of both his career here and in the Dreams.
Finn flopped down in a kitchen chair. He stared at the fridge, wishing it were back in place so this could be over. It wiggled a little, scooting an inch.
“Oh crap!” He looked away from it and at Rey. “OK I'm not thinking about the fridge, not thinking about it….” He didn't want to push it through a wall or anything. “Rey you wanna?” And he jerked his head in the direction of the appliance.
Rey had always enjoyed the tediousness of this kind of activity. It was control over her life and at times the only control she had. It was better to keep things clean and functioning too, when a failure could mean life or death.
It also let her think about things and make plans.
“Yes.” Instead of using the Force, Rey marched up to the fridge, rolled up her sleeves and shoved it back into place with surprising strength. “I didn’t want to risk damaging it again!”
Finn couldn’t jump up fast enough to help her. He sat, jaw dropped and dumbfounded as he watched small and lithe Rey just shove the fridge back in as if she were a linebacker instead.
“What…” he continued gawking stupidly for a few more seconds before speaking again. “Damn!” His dark eyes darted between the appliance and Rey in disbelief. That was actually kinda hot, he realized. It also meant he knew why it had hurt so much when she’d kicked his ass in the dreams; Rey packed some serious firepower in those arms. “Well okay, I guess we’re done.”
Just then, making him jump a mile out of his seat, the doorbell rang. Their food was here. They’d ordered partway through cleaning up, realizing by the time they were done they’d be exhausted and hungry.
“We’re done!” She gave him an odd look, though truth be told she had been showing off for him. She got a little thrill at the idea. The arrival of food though, derailed any further thoughts she might have had. It didn’t take much to make Rey’s day, and good food was one of those things. Or food in general. At least it wasn’t as bad as it had been at first. Distance from her dreams and adjusting to a new life had helped her focus her appetite a little more normally.
Mostly. “That smells divine!”
She gave him that look, the 'What, you couldn't believe I could do that?’ look. Finn knew it well. She had thrown it in his direction numerous times throughout the dreams every time he'd tried to be chivalrous or heroic. He'd learned quickly Rey could take care of herself.
He went to the door that had been left partway open, the glass storm door propped open by the delivery guy's foot; that's how the smell of Thai had wafted in.
“Hey,” said the delivery guy, who seemed to be in a hurry. “Delivery.”
Finn signed the receipt and gave him cash for a tip (he'd payed by card online) and the guy was gone before Finn could even check the bags to make sure everything was there. Shaking his head he hauled in two heavy bags full of food and Thai iced tea.
“Living room?” He offered. It was more comfortable and they could watch TV while they scarfed down their lunch.
“I need this,” Rey said, like the food really was a divine kind of thing. Just the smell made her salivate and she didn’t realize how hungry she was until it was right in front of her. She grabbed her food and sat down next to Finn, subconsciously leaning against him as she started to dig in.
Finn grinned as he felt Rey’s weight against his shoulder and leaned a little back into her happily. He put the TV on to a random channel and started digging into his food as well, inhaling it as if he hadn’t eaten in days. “So,” he said around the noodles in his mouth. “Think you could show me some stuff? Like, teach me the basics so I don’t toss stuff across the room again?” He really wanted to learn.
“Yeah, I think I can show you the basics,” Rey promised. Enough so he didn’t end up hurting himself or others, at least. They’d have to train together for anything more than that. She glanced at him and smiled, then leaned her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes.
“Sweet,” he said, swallowing his food. He was midway to shovelling another forkful into his face when he felt Rey's head on his shoulder. Cliche as it sounded, he could swear he felt his heart skip a beat. Cuddling was a new thing for him with Rey, and he was still getting used to it. He playfully raised an eyebrow and said, “Food coma already?”
“Not really, just getting comfortable,” Rey replied. She’d give him a smile but that would require moving. And she really, really didn’t want to move right now.
Finn was grinning like an idiot on the inside, and sort of was on the outside except he'd hungrily shoved another forkful of food into his mouth. Finishing, he set the container aside and sighed, content, then saying, “Okay, I think we can binge watch some Netflix and do Force stuff later. How's that sound?” He smiled down at her.
“That sounds wonderful,” Rey said. She snuggled in against him. “Just wonderful.”
