Valentine’s Day. The day of love, and chocolate, and flowers. It wasn’t Lowell’s first Valentine’s Day in a relationship, but it was his first one with Liv. And his first one as a zombie. Which meant that there were some things he could cross off the list immediately. Such as a hot air balloon ride - very romantic, also very likely to make him go into Full-On Zombie Mode. Expensive fancy dinners weren’t nearly as satisfying now that they couldn’t taste anything that wasn’t spicy, especially as expensive fancy restaurants weren’t likely to use human brains as their ingredients.
Finally, he’d settled on a romantic sunset cruise, and hoped that would be up Liv’s alley. Dinner would be served on board, but Lowell had made sure to smuggle in some high quality hot sauce, and there’d be an open bar, so that was a plus. And then it would just be them, surrounded by other couple’s they could ignore, the sunset, and maybe some dolphins.
Even though Liv had been a zombie longer than Lowell, this was still her first Valentine’s Day as one. It was going to be interesting to say the least. Of course Liv had Valentine Day dates before. Most of them had been with Major, but this felt different. Lowell made her feel different. As much as that scared her she planned on telling him that tonight. He deserved it.
Basketball coach’s brain or not, Liv still dressed up for their romantic cruise, wearing ared rose printed dress. Her hair was down as usual, and minimal make up. She was never one to hide her zombieness. “So,” Liv said once they climbed on board the boat. “How many lucky girls have you taken on a boat before?”
Now that was a trap that seemed easy to walk into. Lowell had definitely brought girls on boats before; he was a rock star after all, and had once been rather fond of yacht parties. But none of those times had had the distinct feel of romance to them that he was aiming for. “Have I told you how beautiful you look tonight?” he asked instead, giving her a cheeky smile and looping an arm around her waist.
Liv didn’t miss that deflection. Even if it was wrapped in a compliment. “Should I be jealous?” Liv teased a smile on her face. She had never really been the jealous type and she was confident in her relationship with Lowell. Despite him dumping her in the beginning. She was just glad she wasn’t on a brain that made her crazy or jealous at the moment. Or ever, no more hallucinations please. Been there, done that.
“Not even a little bit,” Lowell assured her. “There’s never been a girl like you on a boat like this.” Or a girl like Liv in general. He’d never felt this way about anyone, not even the girl he’d moved from the UK for, though he wasn’t about to tell Liv that. He’d already told her he loved her only to have her tell him about how he’d been murdered in the dreams, which wasn’t a conversation he was looking forward to revisiting. Besides, he didn’t want to appear clingy or something after what seemed like a rejection.
It wasn’t rejection. Liv had just been so overwhelmed with feelings, worry, that she couldn’t say it then. And then she wasn’t quite sure how to bring it up. Should she wait for the right moment? Or just blurt it out like Lowell had? “Shut up,” Liv joked although the macho part of her new personality was coming out a little. “You’re going to make me blush,” she added which was more Liv, than basketball coach.
Lowell smiled. “If you think that’s going to discourage me, you have another thing coming. I’d kill to bring some colour into those cheeks of yours.” He’d never seen Liv with what might be considered a rosy glow, and he kind of regretted that.
She wasn’t even sure she could blush. Even if she felt like she was, would it show? She honestly had no idea. “Ugh,” again, her tone was teasing. “I never should have said that. It’s a wonder why I love you.” Apparently blurting it out it was. Oh well whatever, Lowell deserved to know how she felt. She had made him wait for long enough.
Lowell paused, letting Liv’s words sink in. Then, he smiled, pulling Liv to gunwale and wrapping his arms around her. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I quite caught that,” he said.
Liv just smiled in return, her own arms wrapping around Lowell’s neck. “Oh, well that’s too bad.” Apparently she was in a teasing mood tonight. “Because I’m not going to say it again.” Which was a lie, she would. At some point, but for right now she’d show him. Which was precisely what she did, bringing her lips to his, pouring everything she felt for him into the kiss.
Lowell felt a pang of disappointment, but it was quickly overshadowed with just how happy he was that she’d actually said it in the first place. And was kissing him. He kissed her back hungrily, part of him wondering if there was somewhere on this yacht they could go to be alone. He pulled her closer to him, though it seemed like no matter how close he could pull her to him she’d never be close enough.
But good things couldn’t last forever, and the kiss eventually broke. “I guess I can handle not hearing it again right away after a kiss like that,” he said breathily.
Maybe this boat thing wasn’t the best idea. They couldn’t exactly escape back to one of their places, which was honestly all Liv wanted to do after that kiss. But they’d make the best of it. If they couldn’t find a place to sneak off to it would just be a romantic evening filled with subtle foreplay and sexual tension. Which really, would make the dessert after even hotter. “You’ll have plenty of chances,” Liv winked at him, a bit breathless herself.
Lowell couldn’t help but gaze at her for a moment longer, before he finally managed to tear his gaze away. He was regretting to the boat now. Much better that they should be somewhere where he could just rip all her clothes off zombie style. But he forced his thoughts away from that train of thought. “We should go take advantage of that open bar,” he suggested. “I could really do for some champaign.”
Yeah, if they weren’t going to tear each other’s clothes off Liv could use a drink herself. “Me too, or maybe something stronger,” she gave him a knowing smile. This was definitely going to be a Valentine’s Day to remember.
