Water dripped in the distance, echoing through the cramped chamber as Lara squeezed her way inside. It had taken many more hours than she’d expected to even find the place, and the men she’d hired to guide her had turned on her, as though something had driven them mad. Her leg burned from a flesh wound, and there were numerous other cuts and bruises besides. But she’d lost them, and found what she was searching for. It had just taken her much longer than she’d meant to.
Pulling out a notebook, she glanced through it and then sketched the markings she saw. She took pictures, too, but ideally she wanted to preserve her camera for something really important or extraordinary. Not for the first time, she missed voices in her ears. Sam, or even Zip. Sometimes she wanted the loneliness, but time with Bo had made her enjoy the company of others. Even just select others.
The chamber narrowed further before opening into a cavern of sorts. Water ran far below her, and across the way something glinted in the light of the torch strapped to her head. There was a greenish tint to it and for the briefest of moments she thought she heard whisperings.
It was nearly four meters to the other side, and Lara braced herself before launching herself across. She threw her climbing axe and it caught on a crack in the rock. Climbing up, she pulled herself over the ledge.
A rusted pike nearly ran through her as she swung out of the way at the last second. Another shot down from above, embedding itself in her forearm. Lara screamed, grabbing onto it and pulling with all her might. She free’d herself with barely enough time to avoid another trap, this one a cage of spikes that slammed into where she’d just been. Silence fell, save her breath ragged in her ears, burning her throat. Her arm hurt worse than her leg, but triumphantly, she approached the object she’d been seeking. “Lets see what is so important as to merit such traps....”
Lara snapped herself out of it, when she felt herself staring at the object, enraptured. That was interesting. She glanced around the pillar it was set on, checking for more traps. Seeing nothing, she picked it up. It was warm to the touch, and the green glow heightened, casting her skin in a sickly shade. Lara put it in a pouch, and picked up her axe. Scanning the area she climbed onto, she realized she was on a pillar of stone. Below her the water seemed to be moving faster and harder than it had before, and then the pillar jerked under her feet. With seconds to spare, Lara jumped, grasping at the rock face and finally catching herself with her axe. Her feet dangled over the water, and looking down she could see sharp rocks just below the surface.
Exhaling, Lara began the long, slow climb up, weighed down by what was in her pouch but spurred on by the joy of discovery. Getting home, though, would be a little easier said than done.
