James was so excited. He actually had a Pokemon of his own. In the dreams, he had several of them, and he had been waiting for one to show up since the dreams started. Everyone else got dream gifts, and he had gotten a few, but a real Pokemon had never appeared until now.
He hadn’t quite stopped to consider what all he needed to do to take care of a Pokemon. They all had traits that could make apartment life difficult, but he would make do. How could anyone not want the cute little puppy that was busy wagging his tail and chewing an old pair of shoes. Anna could also get the room ready for the eventual embers that would come from the little Growlithe.
He bounced to the door when she knocked, “Hi,” he said, opening the door wider to reveal the puppy lying near the sofa. “Come on in.”
Anna bounced practically the whole way to James’s place, so excited to get to meet a real, live Pokemon!! How amazing was that? And Anna had joined team Mystic, which was the team that James had recommended, right? Anyway, she wasn’t about to impress him now with her collection of MagiKarp or how quickly she’d leveled.
“Hey!” Anna beamed, up on her toes when he answered the door. Anna was one of those girls who made friends with everyone almost instantly, and trusted people to go wherever they invited her. She and James knew each other, and she was friendly with him, but they hadn’t become close yet. She was looking forward to changing that today!
“OHMYGOD,” she squealed. “Is this him??” Anna bee-lined for the sofa and brought both hands down to hold out for the puppy to sniff.
James opened the door wider, and the little Growlithe puppy perked up his ears. Just like the show or the game, he was orange, with black stripes, and tufts of cream colored fur at his tail, chest and mohawk. This one was definitely young, and looked ready to go out and see the world. There was no sign of fire yet, although a Growlithe didn’t have a flaming tail.
He sniffed Anna’s hand, then bowed down on his front paws and shook his tail, ready to play. James reached down and scratched his head. “He’s so perfect,” he grinned. “I can’t believe he’s mine. Growlie sit.”
The puppy sat on command, already learning. “He’s going to be smart too. Come on in and sit and he’ll come and play.”
“Oh my god.” Anna was almost in tears, really. She clapped her hands a couple of times. This was quite possibly the best thing she’d ever seen! He was so cute! Anna wanted one desperately, but didn’t trust bringing a pet into her house. “Good boy!! Good boy, Growlithe!” Then she nodded at James and moved over to sit with him.
“Does he know a lot of tricks? What kinds of games does he like? Do you guys cuddle at night together?” She was full of questions as she moved into the room.
“We are just starting the tricks. He loves to play ball though. I’m a little worried about teaching him the Pokemon moves. I don’t even know if he can learn them.” Wouldn’t that be amazing if he could? Well, except for catching the curtains or the furniture on fire.
The orange, black and white pup bounced over with a tennis ball as if he understood the conversation and wanted to show off. He dropped his two front legs down, butt in the air. His tail wagged. There wasn’t a sign of flames yet, but they could come. James could imagine it. “Let’s take him outside and then he can chase it. He loves that.”
“Oh my god yes.” Anna said, nodding enthusiastically. The idea of watching a Pokemon playing around outside made her heart practically melt. This pup was probably the cutest she’d ever seen in her whole life. “Yes! I can’t wait to see him chase a ball!” She bounced up with energy that probably rivaled that of the puppy in front of her. “I can’t wait to see him in the sunshine!”
Once again, the little Growlithe put both of his paws down with his butt in the air, tail wagging. James picked up the collar and leash, and slipped them on to the wiggly puppy. He was so hard to resist with all that energy. “It’s just a few blocks to the beach. If it isn’t too busy, we can let him run, and just see what he does.” The little puppy seemed to agree. “I wonder if he understands what I’m saying? Most of them do - at least on the show.”
Anna nodded, climbing up to her feet. Damn, he was so cute! She wished she could have a real, live Pokemon! The intelligence behind the Growlithe’s eyes was amazing. Anna was sure the dog-pokemon could understand what they were saying. He was following their conversation with intensity. “Sounds great! I can’t wait to see what he does!” She turned to head out the front door.
James was also amazed about the eyes. He was so alert. So were Pokemon. They went beyond the animal world and had a certain understanding that a normal dog did not. “I thought there was someone saying they had a direwolf on the network. I don’t remember who. It doesn’t actually help when it comes to a creature that can light something on fire.”
The little dog tipped his head and came towards the pair of humans, putting his head under their hands. His tail wagged showing that he was friendly. How could he cause trouble? “Let’s go get some toys.” James clipped on the lead and opened the door.
“Oh my gosh, I hope we can find him a friend! And if any more Pokemon come out of your Dreams? I want to be the first call you make!” Anna beamed brightly, scratching the little guy behind his ears. Then she bounded out the door, just as excitedly as her new Pokemon friend.
"You will be my very first call,"James promised. Most people wouldn't believe him at all. Anna did, and that was a real plus. She was also very fun to hang around with. She loved animals as much as he did. He would have to introduce her to Kurt soon. They would all have a great time.
