The Type 2 Energy Weapon, also known as a Gravity Hammer, had appeared beside Carolina’s bed one morning, looking for all the world as if it belonged there, resting against one of the bedposts. This was the first time the Dreams had chosen to give her a weapon. Or at least something that count actually be counted as a weapon. The grappling hook and armor were technically weapons, but there was nothing quite like the kickback of a blaster rifle or the satisfying crunch of an enemy’s armor against a giant hammer. And she knew just the person to help her try it out.
There were plenty of deserted places perfect for testing out the various weaponry available to the Agency, both from the various Dreams as well as the ones cooked up by the various scientists and engineers. Carolina knew of a few, thanks to Shepard and her Mako. God, what she would give to get a Pelican form her dreams. Hell, even Wash managed to get a Warthog, so who knows? The Hammer had appeared after she Dreamt of deciding her new quest to find the Director, so perhaps the Dreams would give her something else when she managed to actually kill the bastard.
Pulling the Gravity Hammer from the back of the car, Carolina surveyed the various trees along the stretch of land in front of her. “Think we’re going to need more targets?”
Carolina sure knew how to make a woman’s day. Jane pulled her sunglasses down, peering around before removing them entirely. “Depends on what that thing actually does. There’s another ridge nearby we can hit. Used to be a quarry. Abandoned now. So we won’t be fucking up nature too badly.”
She was excited. New firepower was always fun. Almost as fun as getting laid. Almost.
“Always good to have options.” Carolina set the head of the hammer on the ground and leaned the handle in Shepard’s direction to offer her the first swing. It may not look like much, but it weighed about the same a medium-sized dog. It would probably be a bit more difficult to wield one-handed without being aided by her armor, but that was not about to stop her from trying anyway.
“From what I can tell from the Dreams, it’s pretty much used like a giant hammer, except you can emit an energy blast to push things back as well.” Carolina offered the other woman a wolfish grin. “But I usually just used it like a heavy club to smash any insurgents that got in my way.”
It wasn’t much heavier than many of the weapons Shepard had used in her dreams. Between her natural ability, her biotics and the enhancements Miranda had done to her, it wasn’t difficult to life. “This is nice. I always liked a good melee weapon.” Considering her favorite tactic was to charge in like a human battering ram. She swung it at a decent sized boulder.
“Given a big enough fulcrum, right?” Or a powerful enough melee weapon, and she was willing to be that Shepard could indeed move the world. Although, it might not survive the results. Carolina pulled her own sunglasses down over her eyes. This was going to be good. She was rewarded moments later as the boulder shattered, large pieces blown back by the swing in a wide arc. Damn. Granted, it could not do much in the way of slicing something neatly in two, but hell, this was still pretty damn effective.
”Fuck yeah!” Jane jumped up, punching the air with her other fist. “I got an idea you might want to step back.” Shepard started to glow blue as her biotics kicked in. She aimed herself towards a rocky hill and in a flash of energy she launched herself towards it. The combined energy of her powers and the Gravity Hammer shattered the little mountain into dust and shrapnel.
Carolina knew better than to just take a single step back, backing away until Shepard had plenty of room. She was not sure how the two technologies would work together, but she need not have worried. Mountain, meet hammer, meet Shepard, meet dust. Carolina whistled, raising a hand above her eyes to better survey the damage. There was a slight dip where the hill had been. “I think you got it, sir.” She said with a wide grin.
Shepard thrust the hammer into the air and let out a woop of joy. “We need fifteen of these!” She could imagine the look on Garrus’s face and that would be worth just about anything. She grinned triumphantly at Carolina and sauntered back to her.
“I’ll get the Dreams right on it.” Carolina drawled. Somehow, she doubted the weapon would be nearly as deadly in anyone else’s hands. Including her own. Dammit. She crossed her arms and leaned back against the hood of the car. “You know, after that, I don’t think demolishing a small grove of trees or boulders is going to have quite the same impact.”
She grinned at her, then held the weapon out, careful to not point the deadly part at her. “We can find something suitable to smash. I wonder if there’s some old car wreck out here. I’ll bet that would be satisfying to smash.”
Carolina took the hammer, making sure she did not activate it accidentally as she swung it up to rest on her shoulder. “That could work. Actually…If we do find one, we could always use it for target practice.” She nodded at the dip. “That would make a pretty good target to shoot for, don’t you think?” It would be like a much more violent game of golf. Or possibly horseshoes if it caught something on its way to the goal.
Another grin spread slowly across Shepard’s face. “You know, if we can’t find one, we could always rob a junkyard. Find some old beetle to use like a golf ball.” Sometimes, violent minds could think alike.
“That gives an entirely new meaning to the game ‘slug bug’.” Carolina knew that she should object to the idea of robbing a place for any reason that was not pertinent to national security or a life-or-death situation. Which meant she would probably to go back and slip a few bills and a thank you note under the manager’s door later. It was a junkyard, after all. Fielding useless pieces of metal to random foragers was what they were there for. “Sounds like a good plan to me.”
“Come on, lets go!” Shepard turned towards car, a bounce in her step. What a lovely lovely day!
