Celaena bounced into the room with bowls of both sweet and salty popcorn for the two of them. Climbing over the back of the sofa, she plonked herself down next to Rey and put the bowls on the coffee table in front of them. “This is going to be brilliant! I haven’t had a proper movie night in so long!” she grinned, picking a handful of sweet popcorn up for herself. “But first, tell me what’s happening with this guy of yours!” she said before stuffing some popcorn in her mouth.
Rey’s last movie night had involved watching a movie about herself, something she didn’t want to think about at the moment. So she was looking forward to making a memory with her friend. “Uhm.”
Okay, she hadn’t prepared herself for that question, and really she should have. She smiled a little sheepishly. “We’re doing...okay? I don’t know what we are, really, but I’m more open to the idea than I was.”
Celaena stopped munching popcorn and looked at her in shocked amazement. “You’re doing ‘okay’? What is that supposed to mean? Have you guys, y’know, talked about it? Have you...done stuff? Like kissing or anything?” she asked rapidly, turning to face her friend on the couch, feet curled underneath her as she waited for Rey to answer.
Rey looked a little sheepish. “We haven’t really talked about it yet. And we haven’t kissed… or anything more than that.” Her face was a little red under the sudden interrogation. “We did talk a little bit but we’re not… dating or anything.”
“You’re not? What happened? Everything looked so promising over the summer,” Celaena replied sadly. “Are you ok?”
“What? Everything is fine!” Rey laughed, nervously. “I’m just...i’m cautious, okay? I don’t want to risk losing a friend over something stupid, and… I don’t really know what I’m doing.” She flopped back on the couch. “There’s also this ...thing I have to worry about, from the dreams. I think. There’s a rule for people with my powers. We’re not supposed to...get attached to people.”
Celaena narrowed her eyes at Rey, suspicious at the way she responded to the questions. “Look, I get it, it’s ok to go slow,” she shrugged. “Damian and I were...slow. Things just seemed so...imminent before is all. You’re still interested, right?” she asked. “Not get attached? God that sounds...lonely and boring,” she frowned, picking some more popcorn up.
“Yes, we’re being very slow.” Maybe they were going too slow, but this was all so new to Rey. She didn’t know what steps to take, or what steps she wanted to take. She wasn’t even sure she could give him everything he wanted or needed.
“I suppose it was. My f- the last Jedi master, who went missing, started to change some of those rules, It hink.”
“Epically so it seems,” Celaena remarked. “You didn’t answer my question about whether you’re still interested or not. I mean, it’s ok to change your mind, have a change of heart,” she said. “A Jedi master? What’s that? You’ve not really spoken much about your powers. I mean, I know you have a light sword or something which is really cool, but have your powers manifested more here?”
As if to demonstrate, Rey held out her hand. The popcorn bowl floated into the air and then into her lap. “They have. A jedi master is one who is….well trained in the arts, I suppose. They were monks I think. There’s only legend and myth about them in my dreams. I suppose it’s in my blood.” She ignored the remark on being interested in Finn or not, as she didn’t have an answer. She cared about him, loved him even. She just didn’t know what kind of love it was.
Celaena gasped as the bowl levitated out of her lap. “All you had to do was ask,” she teased, realising she’d been hogging the sweet popcorn. “That’s pretty damn cool though! You’re going to have to be a monk though? That’s a bit of a...quiet life,” she tried to say diplomatically. It sounded boring to her honestly, lots of boring clothes, veils and praying, none of which were exactly up Rey’s street. “So you’re going to keep going with this guy and see what happens?” she asked casually and leaned forward, crossing her legs under her and leaning her elbows on her knees as she reached for some popcorn in Rey’s lap.
Rey took a handful then floated it back to Celaena. “I don’t really know. My dreams ended when I met him face to face. I assume I’m to be trained, in using my powers better. There is evil, bad things. I have to fight them.” She’d never wanted the fight. Yet a part of her had always dreamed of adventure. But Han Solo had died for this. Finn was hurt. So many others counted on her. Even if she didn’t want it, she’d be compelled to do it.
Tossing some popcorn in her head, she nodded. “That’s the best way, isn’t it? Take it as it happens?”
“Training would be pretty cool though! Are your Dreams changing your feelings for this guy? Finn was it?” Celaena asked, taking the popcorn bowl and putting it down between them. “What sort of evil things do you have to fight?”
“I don’t know. I’m very protective of him. He was my first friend in...really ever. We clicked well, worked well together. He saved my life, and I saved his. I suppose that’s romantic, but I’ve never really thought about romance before.” Rey rubbed at the skin between her thumb and forefinger. “People. An order that worships a fallen empire and wishes to rule the galaxy. They destroyed an entire star system. Billions died.”
“I can see why you would be drawn to him, but I think you’re right in taking your time and wanting to be sure about things before you move forward. It would be a shame to hurt a friendship that’s so special,” Celaena nodded, then reached forward to take Rey’s hand in hers. “That’s really crap. I’m really sorry, but I can only imagine that you are going to be kick ass once you’ve gone through this training with this guy, just don’t forget who you are,” she smiled at her friend.
“He really is special…” Rey smiled, that big toothy beaming smile she got when she was truly happy. It was enough to push through the darkness of her thoughts. It didn’t stop the anger from edging into her voice. “I will. For all the people they’ve hurt.”
“Atta girl!” Celaena grinned, patting her hand before turning on the sofa to look at the tv. “Now, let’s watch some Disney.”
