Where: Mexico
What: Vacation

Kate finished unpacking. It was going to be a lazy week. She wasn’t sure what Clint had planned, if anything, so she’d packed sort of one thing for each occasion; casual, dressy casual, casual casual, and three swimsuits. If Kate had anything to say about it, they would just stay in the hotel room all week and not need clothes. But Lucky would need to be walked, so Kate had to have flip flops, jean shorts, bikini tops… that sort of thing. It was warm enough that she wouldn’t need much else.
She finished putting the last of her clothes the drawer, and stepped back to put the now empty suitcase in the closet. If they were staying here for six days, she wanted to feel a little less like she was living out of a suitcase. “Clint?” She called. He was in the bathroom or something. “Did you finish unpacking?”
Driving to Mexico had been a nearly insane idea, but Clint wasn’t leaving Lucky for a whole week and he didn’t think it made sense to get him checked into flying because neither Lucky nor Clint were great flyers (it messed too much with Clint’s ears and Lucky was just too anxious about it), so driving hadn’t seemed like the worst idea. Until they were seven hours into a nineteen hour drive and then Clint was wondering what the hell he’d been thinking. Plus side, the company was awesome, scenery didn’t suck and the weather stayed bearable the whole way.
Yay, vacation time.
Kate of course was all organised -a suitcase and thought out clothes and outfits, Clint made sure Lucky’s leash and food was in the car and then just guestimated the rest of it all. No one said he was a responsible packer. “Yeah, sure.” He wasn’t unpacked, he hadn’t even started. They’d looked around the little villa they’d rented and Lucky had curled up by the open balcony to nap and Clint had promptly faceplanted on the sofa to half-doze himself while Kate was being the responsible one again. “Totally unpacking right now.” Which she knew he wasn’t, because she was in the bedroom.
Hey, they had tunes, air conditioning, and each other. It was a really long drive, but taking turns behind the wheel and eating Doritos made the trip go actually pretty fast. After so long in the car, Kate couldn’t imagine sitting. So she’d spent time unpacking the food they’d brought for the week, and then unpacked the clothes she’d brought. Then she wandered back out into the living area and caught sight of Clint on the sofa, Lucky on the floor beside him.
A little chuckle escaped her. “You guys are completely useless.” She teased, moving across the room to crouch down beside Clint’s head on the sofa. Lucky’s tail started to wag, flopping up and down against the floor. Kate leaned in to press a kiss against Clint’s… whatever part of his face she could reach. “Are you hungry? I bet Lucky’s hungry. And I bet he needs a walk.”
“Oh my God I need something that is not Dorito chips.” Sure, they kept them going in between stops, and it wasn’t terrible but he was craving actual, honest to god food. It wouldn’t even need to be a pizza, he would take anything. “We should definitely get the hell out and stretch our legs.”
They’d driven through the night so that they didn’t lose too much vacation time, and it wasn’t like it was a hassle all in all, Lucky slept most of the time and they kept each other amused. Sleeping now would just throw everything out of sync. “A walk sounds good.” Squirming around on the sofa, until he way lying on his back, facing upwards at Kate with a slightly dopey smile. “Hey.”
Maybe it was the fact that they were on vacation, couples vacation, around when they figured their anniversary would be. It was hard to tell when it would legitimately be, since they start out kind of causal and stuff, but bookmarking it for the start of July seemed good enough to him.
Yeah, going through at least a bag of Doritos between the pair of them (wait, had they gone through two?) was almost too many Doritos. Almost. Kate was a little tired of them now, and was looking forward to some real food. They had string cheese, apples, crackers, hot pockets, grapes, bananas, carrots and hummus, all kinds of fun snack-type foods. And this place was one of those nicer places in Mexico… there wasn’t a concern here about getting too much yuck in the water… but Kate brought her own Brita filter and ice cube trays, anyway.
“Hi,” Kate replied, grinning a tired but happy grin. She leaned her upper body against his, resting so her lips could brush against his jaw. “Think there’s some food within walking distance of this place?” It was an amazing little bungalow that he’d rented for the pair of them. She couldn’t wait to laze around all day.
Of course any indication that Kate and Clint were forgetting about him had Lucky yipping a little from his own spot nearby, his tail lazily sweeping back and forth on the floor. “I think I saw a place.” Small kind of place with outside seating which would hopefully be cool with Lucky settling by their feet with some water and nibbles. “Lemme change, and we’ll go get something to eat.” And get some air, it would probably help them not crash too early and spend the week trying to catch up with that before they headed home.
Pulling himself upright, Clint dropped a quick kiss on Kate before grabbing his bag to change into a light t-shirt and cut-off denims, he was mostly just looking to not be in the same stuff he’d been travelling the whole day in. He even went as far as to put his stuff in a drawer too. Splashing his face with some water, Clint at least felt like he wouldn’t fall asleep if he sat still for too long.
“Okay, you up for this?”
While Clint was in the other room changing (and probably unpacking), Kate climbed up from the floor and moved into the kitchen with Lucky. She grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and poured some into a bowl… what? She wasn’t gonna let Lucky drink the tap water here… even in a nice part of Mexico. And then she drank some herself. “Gotta stay hydrated,” she explained to the dog. It was hot. She was already sweaty.
“Yup.” Kate gave him a smile as she picked up Lucky’s leash. “Has anyone ever told you you dress down nice?”
Clint took a second to glance down and, okay, so his version of casual was hella casual, but whatever. Then again, he’d nearly never been this casual with Kate just yet. “It’s hot.” And that was the excuse for the day really. “Whatever, c’mon cutie, we’re getting some tourist shit in today even if it kills me.” And it probably wouldn’t but whatever.
With Lucky on the leash, the little place closed up with the AC running, Clint pocketed the keys and led the way out the path towards the main road to try and work out which way he’d seen that little cafe place, stretching out his back as he went.
It was beautiful, if Kate was perfectly honest. She’d grown up in the city, and loved everything to do with tall buildings and loads of people wandering around, but there was something to be said for a pleasant countryside. The trees were so green down here, and even though it was ridiculously hot and muggy, there was a bit of a breeze going.
She slipped Lucky’s leash through the belt loop of her shorts as they walked, enjoying the smell of the sea as it wafted over toward them. The cafe wasn’t that far away, maybe a quarter of a mile. By the time they were seated Kate had worked up an appetite. She glanced at the menu, chuckling softly. “My Spanish isn’t good enough for this trip. I hope yours is better than mine.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll figure something out.”
---
By day three of their vacation, Lucky was far more at home with the place they were staying, less staying by the one door, more wandering around and sleeping on the floor in the sun. They’d stocked up on bottled water, snacks and easy stuff around the place for some ease. Considering the weather was constantly fantastic it was decidedly easy to laze around almost all morning, a short walk in the afternoon for some change of scenery and then back for some more lazing around until dinner.
It was relaxing.
Kate was really enjoying herself. They’d gone for walks, gone swimming, gone out for meals, stayed in to watch movies, stayed in for loads and loads of vacation sex, and slept in the warmth of the sunshine. So far so good. She’d even say she was relaxed now. Although, maybe she was a little bored.
“Mmmf,” Kate said, rolling over. Sunshine was spilling through the bedroom door all over the bed, with its crumpled sheets and curled up blankets. She wrapped an arm around the sleeping dog, and fell back into a doze.
For once, Clint was actually up before Lucky or Kate, he’d even gone so far as to put on board shorts too, rather than just laze in bed. But it was largely because of plans. Tugging the very thin, loose sheets away, Clint leaned over on the bed to press kisses against Kate’s neck, fingers lightly tickling over her ribcage to coax her awake better.
“Katie, c’mon, wakey-wakey. It’s jet-skiing day.” Because, c’mon, they were in Mexico, and if they didn’t enjoy a little bit of the coast then they were wasting the opportunity before they arrived home. “Don’t’cha wanna go scuba diving?”
Kate was more than willing to stay asleep, but Lucky was not. When Clint came into the room, his dog lifted his head and gave the man his attention. It pulled on Kate’s arm, and then Clint was kissing her neck. This drew her, almost unwillingly, out of dreamland. (Thankfully, not Dreamland.)
“...scuba what?” She mumbled, turning over onto her back so she could open bleary eyes and smile up at him. “...that requires getting out of bed.” But it was just a tease, as even as she said it, she started sitting up and rubbing at her face to try and wake up.
Getting a body tackle from Lucky at least confirmed that the giant lug wasn’t entirely enamoured with Kate just yet, he seemed to go through his motions. It didn’t take long before Lucky was sprawling himself over Clint’s knees, tail bashing on Kate’s legs where she started to stir. “It does, yeah, but the beach is calling Kate, and we’re here for fun.”
He was already sure he could get her up and moving for the walk to the beach, although they’d be leaving Lucky behind for the morning, he could come and go out of the apartment with the AC and water left around for him. “You wanna get some of that ice cream on the way back?” They were meant to be splurging as vacationers, so why the hell not?
“Hell yeah, I do.” Kate said, breaking into a smile at the thought. Ice Cream for breakfast? Or like, brunch? Or whatever? She couldn’t say no to that. A little chuckle escaped her and she leaned over to wrap her arms tightly around the dog. One big squeeze and a scratch or two behind the ears, then Kate was dragging herself up out of the bed to prepare for the day. Yawning, she tossed her hair up into a sloppy bun, then dug clothes out to change.
“Beach sounds pretty amazing, not gonna lie.” Laying around on the beach was so calming. It was rapidly becoming her favorite activity with Clint. Aside from other things. Sexy things. More obvious things.
While Kate got herself ready, Clint made a point in setting things up so that Lucky wouldn’t get too hot or dehydrated inside. The fact that they had a closed off garden meant he could go outside if he wanted, and the air conditioning was running constantly. Filling up the water bowl, leaving out snacks, they’d just need to make it up to the dog with an extra long walk later.
Grabbing his wallet, sunglasses and phone, Clint just smirked at Kate from the doorway to the villa. “It’s a way different beach from California, right?” Which it shouldn’t really be, since it was the same damn coast, but apparently a vacation made everything different. The best thing was they could lay around the beach for a while after some fun in the water, then come home and lay around by the mini-pool in the yard there.
It was definitely a good time for just lazing around.
That’s what vacations were for, right? Kate smirked, tugging her shirt over her head. She fluffed up her hair, and turned to him. “Very different. Shows what a couple hundred miles and a week off of work will do to a person. And a place.” And a relationship. Things felt stronger than ever between the two of them. She wandered over to where Clint was standing, her shoes making the gentle flip, flop, flip, flop noise they so often did. Arms wrapped up and around him and she stole a kiss. Quick. Chaste. Gentle. But smiling all the while.
“Let’s hurry up and relax already.” Kate said, giving him a grin.
