Dorian had been planning the perfect way to ask Vanessa to move in with him for a few weeks now and it was finally time to execute his plan. It might not have been perfect, but he couldn’t wait any longer. Vanessa already spent quite a few evenings at Dorian’s house as it was and he enjoyed those nights much more than the ones he spent sleeping alone. He’d never thought that he’d ever be in a relationship where he’d actually want someone to live with him, but Vanessa was not like anyone else he had ever been with. Vanessa intrigued and excited him in a way few others ever had and he wanted her around always.
He’d planned for dinner to be served on the patio instead of the dining room and had ordered some Bella Donna from Flower Alchemy to be arraigned around the patio for a nice added touch. Dorian had already been out on the patio when Vanessa had arrived, wanting to see her reaction to everything so he’d informed that evening’s staff to have someone escort her out there upon her arrival.
The evenings spent with Dorian were Vanessa’s favourite and she spent as much time with him as possible. There was never any expectation between them, they were themselves and perfectly happy with it and each other. It was a nice feeling and had led to Vanessa deciding to explore her powers further by offering her tarot reading skills at local ‘alternative’ stores. Dorian encouraged her not to shy away from her gifts and instead to develop and control them.
Arriving she knew something was going on when she was escorted to meet Dorian for dinner usually when he knew it would be her he answered the door himself. When she was led onto the patio she gasped, it looked amazing and her smile was bright and warm especially when her gaze landed on Dorian. “This is incredible” she told him, moving to press a kiss to his lips, “You are incredible”
Dorian smiled when he saw Vanessa and kissed her back, “Not nearly as incredible as you though.” Taking her hand, he led Vanessa over to the table, “I wanted to do something different tonight. We always eat inside and the patio and the view go to waste.” He pulled out the chair for Vanessa once they reached the patio table where candles and place settings were set up. Dinner was to be brought out only after Vanessa arrived.
“You’re right, it’s a lovely idea Dorian. Thank you” she said, squeezing his hand as they sat. “And it’s all very romantic, not that I expect anything else from you. You have a very romantic soul” she told him with a smile.
“You may be the first person who has ever said such a thing about me,” It wasn’t that Dorian didn’t agree with Vanessa, but he had never really been with anyone where it came out full force the way it had with Vanessa. Of course there had to be some romance in his seduction technique, but he’d never gone to quite the lengths he had for Vanessa. It was safe to say that he was falling in love with Vanessa, but he didn’t want to say anything just yet and jinx this like in the dreams.
“Maybe then I am the first person to truly see it” Vanessa said, her insight being more spot on than she realised. Vanessa too was falling rather deeply in love with Dorian, and unlike the dreams she was embracing who she was much more. Dorian was actually helping with that, showing her that she didn’t need to hide any part of herself.
“Perhaps you are.” Dorian was glad that Vanessa had been embracing who she was more in the waking world and he was sure that it helped that she wasn’t possessed in the waking world like she had been in the dreams and he was glad that he had been the one to help her on this path. “Or perhaps I’ve simply been keeping it a secret from everyone else.”
It was then that dinner was brought out and laid out on the table in front of them and their wine glasses were filled before they were left alone again.
“Perhaps that is it” Vanessa smiled, it definitely helped that she wasn’t possessed and that it didn’t seem like that as something that was going to happen. Vanessa would cling to that for as long as she could. Maybe by embracing her abilities it was keeping that part at bay.
“This looks amazing” she said, as it usually did. Lifting her glass she smiled, “To us” she said clinking their glasses together.
“I told cook to make something special for tonight.” Dorian smiled as he picked up his own glass and clinked it against Vanessa’s, “To us.” He felt that this was a good sign so far. Dorian took a sip of his wine then began eating. He didn’t want to bring up the question too soon so decided to inquire about Vanessa’s day first, “Did you do anything exciting today?”
“See? Romantic” she teased him with a smile before she began to eat, it was truly delicious.”Well,” she said after swallowing, “Actually I had a couple of meetings with some shop owners and they were quite promising”
Dorian smiled and took another sip of his wine, “That’s fantastic. Before you know it, you’ll be doing readings for people daily.” Dorian was curious about what the cards would tell him, but there was a part of him that didn’t want to know. Didn’t want him to tell him that something horrible was going to happen. He wasn’t like the Dorian in his dreams who was immortal and didn’t have to worry about much. At least, he didn’t think he was. He had yet to actually see if the portrait would take on the things he had done.
“It has a lot of potential” she said with a smile, the more she used her abilities the more confident she became with them. Part of her honestly thought that the reason her dream self wasn’t confident was because she didn’t use them as much as she could and it made her nervous of them. “I think it’s something I’ll enjoy” and it would pay the bills which was good, she had a fair amount of savings but didn’t want to use them all up because she wasn’t working.
“Well, I’m very happy for you.” Dorian was glad that Vanessa had something that kept her grounded in the waking world. The last thing he wanted was to see what happened to her in the dreams, happen in real life. “And to add to that, I have something I’d like to ask you.” He had waited, what he thought, was an acceptable amount of time and didn’t want the night to go on too much further without asking.
“Thank you” she said smiling, having Dorian’s support she believed was going to help her change her fate away from the one she was facing in the dreams. “Oh? That sounds important” she said, dabbing her mouth with her napkin before giving him her full attention, “Ask away”
Sitting up a little straighter, Dorian took another sip of wine before placing the glass down on the table, “Vanessa, I’m sure you’ve noticed that for the most part, it’s just me in this rather large house.” No one who worked for Dorian actually lived at his house; instead they all arrived bright and early in the morning and left at various times in the evening once their duties were finished so most of the time it was just Dorian at the house except when Vanessa spent the night, “Much too large for only one person and I’ve been thinking that perhaps you’d do me the honor of moving in.”
Of course Vanessa knew this, she had simply assumed that Dorian preferred it that way. Despite everything he was a private man and having his staff live here wouldn’t allow him that privacy. So when he continued talking and asked her to move in her smile was bright and true, “Dorian” she breathed, “I would be the one honored to move in with you and I will accept your offer"
Dorian’s lips turned up into a smile at Vanessa’s response and he reached across the table to take her hand then leaned forward and kissed the top of it, “You have no idea how happy that makes me, Vanessa.” He’d never thought that he’d want to live with anyone in this capacity, but Vanessa had changed all of that. Changed the way that Dorian looked at things and he didn’t want to be without her.
“I think I might have a clue if it’s anywhere near as happy as I am” she told him with a smile, squeezing his hand. Vanessa felt the same, Dorian had given her confidence and a love of life and she didn’t want to be without him either.
There was no question, Dorian was much happier in the waking world than he was in the dreams. In the dreams, he may do whatever it was that he wanted, much like in real life, but for the most part he was alone. Vanessa and Angelique were exceptions when it came to that part of his life, but he didn’t open up as much as he liked to think he did when it came to either of them. He was still secretive and paranoid and he covered those things up with his lifestyle of debauchery. In the waking world he could be much more open with Vanessa. After all, he’d already shown her his portrait and had no reservations about it.
“Why don’t we finish dinner then we can further discuss your moving in,” It would be a change for him, but he was ready for it.
