Who: Paroline (Peeta and Caroline)
What: Peeta tries teaching Caroline how to bake
Where: Their apartment
When: Last week
Rating: Fairly low
Status: Complete!
Caroline so did not want to bake. Audrey was trying to teach her and now Peeta was refusing to bake things for parties they went to unless Caroline contributed. It wasn’t fair. She didn’t even need human food, why did she have to be the one to make it? She wasn’t any good at it either. But Peeta wanted to teach her so she was going to try and be a good sport about it.
“Okay. What’s first?” ” Caroline asked standing in the middle of the kitchen with her hands on her hips. “And by the way if this turns out horrible you still have to eat it.”
It might be frustrating to learn how to bake, but if Gale could make assorted baked good then Caroline could too. He had heard that Audrey was teaching her as well, but he wanted to do something a little more fun for the two of them. And besides, if she wanted something to take to the party then she could contribute a little more. Besides, he assumed that she would look adorable covered in flour, which was bound to happen
“And I will happily eat whatever you end up making, even if it is disgusting,” Peeta answered with a laugh and leaned in to kiss her forehead, “Alright, we’re just making chocolate chip cookies. Let’s preheat the oven to 400 degrees and then grab a couple bowls. We’re going to combine butter, and the sugars together.” He had even pulled out one of his recipe cards and placed it on the counter as he grabbed measuring cups.
Despite what Peeta believed Caroline was pretty damn sure this was not going to be fun. Her and cooking just didn’t mix. Oh well. Peeta promised to eat the end product so he was really just punishing himself with this whole trying to teach her thing. “You better,” Caroline replied as she turned on the oven.
“So,” she began as she started measuring out ingredients and dumping them into a bowl. “Does this mean I get to teach you how to cheer now?” It was either that or singing but Caroline was pretty sure she couldn’t teach singing. And Peeta had indulged her in karaoke on occasion. Okay she did have a pretty great boyfriend despite this making her bake nonsense.
It was only punishment if he didn’t have faith in Caroline and he had a lot of that. Cookies were hard to mix up, especially if Peeta was watching her every move. It would be fairly foolproof for her and it would be a good bonding experience. She needed to learn a few new life skills even if she didn’t need to eat the food that she helped make.
“If you truly want to teach me how to cheer I will give it a try. It will be really ugly, but you can give it a whirl. Remember, I only have one leg,” Peeta replied with a smirk as she measured out the ingredients. He grabbed the Kitchenaid mixer and brought it over as he transferred the mixture and began to add eggs and get it mixing together, “But you’re doing really well at this so far.”
Caroline watched with wide eyes at Peeta got out the mixer. “I thought you just used a spoon?” Showed how much Caroline paid attention to her boyfriend when he baked. Or at work. Although she spent most of her time up front. She was good with the customers, not so much the making of the food. But that wasn’t her job anyway. Although she was going to be helping out with the back stuff a bit more when Audrey’s baby was born.
“If you’re making me learn the basics of baking I think it’s only fair. I won’t make you do flips or anything.” She’d just teach him some cheers at most with hand movements. He could even do them sitting down if he wanted. It’d come in handy for next year when she dragged him to the UCI football games with her. And baseball. Had to support Tyler and Jeremy after all even if she had technically quit cheering.
“What about flour?” she asked back on the subject of baking. “I know cookies need that.” At least she was pretty sure they did. She grabbed the bag of flour and opened it up ready to dump some in the bowl.
“Thank god because that might be impossible,” Peeta pointed out with a laugh and handed over a measuring cup for her and the flour. He honestly wouldn’t mind her teaching him a couple cheer moves just to tease her with it if they went to a game or something at her school. Besides, it would give him an excuse to get his girlfriend to dress up in her cheerleading outfit. Every man’s fantasy, right? Ha.
“That will come once all of this is mixed together then we slowly add it into the mixer. Measure out your first cup because it’s almost done,” he moved to lower the speed on the mixer so the flour wouldn’t blow up in her face once she put it in there, “Add it a little at a time, let it mix, and then add more.”
“That’s settled then. This summer you are learning how to cheer.” She could probably teach him now but with finals coming up and all their social obligations it could wait. Besides it wasn’t like they would be going to any games over the next few weeks anyway. And yes she did still have her uniform, and she would wear it if Peeta indulged her with the cheering.
Caroline started to pour the flour into the cup but it wasn’t as easy to control as she thought and a lot ended up on the counter. Maybe she should scoop it. Yeah, that was probably a better idea. “Okay,” she said once the cup was full. “Do I add it now?”
“Not a whole lot of cheering, but enough,” Peeta reminded her with a laugh as he watched her try to get the flour out of the bag. It was definitely a learning experience and he so wasn’t going to tell her that she had flour on her nose at the moment. He checked the mixture and nodded, “Yeah, start adding it in now.” It would take some patience and he reached around her to help her slowly add it on, stop, and then add more in, “This is like that movie Ghost.”
“Except you’re not a ghost,” she reminded him laughing. “And I’d rather be in Dirty Dancing.” It was a good idea to hold her hand while she poured in the flour because she would probably just dump it all in, not remembering to go slow even though Peeta had just said it. “Why do we have to pour in a little at a time?” It was ridiculous really. Caroline wiped her forehead with the back of her hand getting even more flour on her face.
“Thank god, I don’t think I want to be a ghost. Nor do I want to be in Dirty Dancing because I cannot dance. Let’s go with Road House or Red Dawn,” Peeta teased as he tried to make sure she was only doing it slowly and then let out a laugh when she wiped her forehead. Yeah, teaching her to bake was definitely a good idea, “Because if we dump all the flour in at once it won’t properly mix together. You want to make sure it’s all mixed in or else the cookies won’t come out right.” It didn’t take long until all the flour was dumped out of her cup and they did one more cup before Peeta moved to grab the chocolate chips for her.
“If you were a ghost I’d have to talk to you through Jeremy, or Hanna’s boyfriend and that would just be awkward,” she laughed at the mental image of Jeremy telling ghost!Peeta he loved him for Caroline. “But I want to say ‘No one puts Peeta in a corner,’” she teased. “Maybe I’ll be Patrick Dempsey and you can be Baby. I can do the lift.” That would be so easy for her then she could say the line too. Although she really was just joking. “I guess Road House it is. I don’t like Charlie Sheen,” she wrinkled her flour covered nose.
“Well that’s a very stupid rule.” Caroline so didn’t have the patience for baking. She had too many places to go and things to do to sit around and gradually add things to the mix. It was so messy too. At least it felt messy and Caroline liked to keep things neat and organized. “Are we almost done?” she asked him impatiently as he handed her the chocolate chips.
“That would be really uncomfortable, but we’d have sexy baking scenes,” He teased her with a smile before playfully hitting her hip with his, “And you are not allowed to say that. And I guessssss you can say that line if you want to. But you’re not lifting me up. We can compromise on some things. And I hate to ruin this perfect moment,” he reached down to grab his phone and snapped a couple photos of her, “But you’ve got some flour on your face and it’s adorable.”
“You’re silly. It doesn’t take that long. And yes, we’re almost done. Add these in and then we can put them on the baking sheets and into the oven,” he couldn’t help but laugh at how impatient she was with all of this. She was learning a good lesson right now and once everything had been mixed in he turned of the mixer and took the bowl out, “Alright, tablespoon scoops onto the baking sheets. We’ll probably get about twenty something.”
“You just wait. One day there will be a perfect reason for me to say that line. And I will.” Or she would create a reason herself. Make one of her friends put Peeta in a corner at the upcoming barbeque. That’d work too. “Peeta!” she replied clearly not amused with the whole flour thing as he was, especially with him taking pictures of it. But she got over it quickly a smirk coming across her face as she picked up the bag of flour and dumped the rest on his head. “You have a little flour on your face too,” she added laughing getting out her own phone to take pictures.
But then it was back to baking. She added the chips, mixed, and started scooping the dough onto the sheets. “Yeah and then we have to wait for them to bake,” she pouted. “That so takes time.”
“Oh my god, Caroline!” he tried not to breathe too deeply as the flour coated his body and he didn’t want to inhale it. He was going to give her a moment to enjoy this victory because very soon he would strike. He did stick a very annoyed look on his face however and went to wash off his hands so he could at least help her with the dough and get this going. “You need to stop whining about it. It will be fine,” the scooping went quickly and he put the baking sheet into the oven and set the timer. She was turned away from him and fiddling with something so he went up behind her, wrapping his arms around her, and quickly pressed his floury face against her neck and shook his head to share in the flour.
Caroline was in the process of removing the flour from her face, using a phone as a mirror, when Peeta came up behind her. She was expecting him to kiss her neck, not shake flour all over it. That was just rude. Well no ruder than dumping a bag of flour on his head but still. “Hey!” she protested through laughter. “You’re horrible,” however she did turn around to give him a kiss getting even more flour on her face. “Now you can wait for these to bake and clean up this mess while I go shower.”
“I think that we should just shower together and conserve water,” he pointed out with a laugh, “But these cookies will be out once we finish cleaning this mess. Together.” He was so not going to let her get away with throwing flour on him and then not have to help clean up. He gave her another kiss and held onto her tightly, “Have I mentioned that I love you today?” He tried to make sure to tell her that every day, but he wasn’t sure if he had said so yet today. They would clean up and then go shower together while the cookies cooled down.
If Caroline really wanted to she could easily wiggle out of Peeta’s grasp and run off to the shower before he could even blink. But she didn’t particularly want to be out of Peeta’s arms. Especially when he was being all cute and sweet. Even if that meant she had to clean. “Ugh,” Caroline mumbled against his lips. “Why do you have to be so cute?” She gave him one more kiss before pulling away. And she was going to show him just how long baking took. At vamp speed Caroline cleaned off off the dishes for the dust buster and sucked up all the flour, then wiped down the counter. It probably took her less than two minutes. “Cookies done yet?”
“It’s my gift. You get super speed and strength and all that, but I get to be cute?” Peeta commented with a laugh as he returned the kiss and then watched in amazement as she used her super speed to clean everything. He couldn’t help but let out a low whistle and applauded her, “Good job on that one. I’m impressed. Cookies should be done in a few more minutes. Do you wanna make out while we wait?”
The whole point of Caroline cleaning super fast was that he had to wait for the cookies while she started their shower without him. Punishment for making her bake. But how could she resist and offer like that? She paused for a moment, pretending to think about it. She took a few steps closer to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Okay,” she finally replied placing a heated kiss on his lips.
