Kate was on the treadmill. She didn’t bring her headphones today, so she was looking up at the silly televisions that had whatever channels on them… with the subtitles on. It was fairly noisy, noisy enough that she was distracted from everything and the minutes were slogging by.
But then she remembered what Pietro had posted about the person training for the marathon, and she started to laugh. She laughed so much that she had to climb off the treadmill so she could stop and double over. People must have thought she was insane.
Pietro entered the gym just in time to see Kate start to laugh and have to get off the machine, he had no idea what had happened. Making his way over to her he stood and raised an eyebrow, “Have you gone insane? Is this a dream thing?” he asked her in an amused tone with a slight smirk on his lips.
Kate was a little embarrassed when Pietro came over. She was breathless from the jogging and the laughing, and her sweaty face was a little pink with embarrassment. “No, I was just… thinking of your friend who’s training for the marathon.” She shrugged, then reached over and gave his shoulder a little punch in friendly greeting. “I don’t think I could handle a marathon, and I’ve been working out forever.”
“Oh” Pietro’s face brightened, “I know. It has been very funny to watch him train. Twenty minutes and he got a stitch yesterday” he went with the punch giving her a grin, “I think you would do better than you think, but they are definitely harder than most believe” Not for him anymore of course but he still enjoyed them.
Kate snorted, then lifted a hand to cover her nose and mouth. She actually snorted. She shook her head a little, and flopped her hands down by her sides. “Oh man. That poor guy. He really has no idea.” Of course, Kate would have a hell of a time making fun of the guy, giggling at him behind his back. Because Kate was a little evil like that. But hey. If the guy was there for the right reasons, she wouldn’t have been mean, but trying to train for a marathon in a week? Ha.
“I’d have to train for like, months. Me. Someone who’s never run in his life? It’d take longer.”
“I have tried to tell him but he believes he will be fine. I think he does not want to admit that someone like me could know better” He was an older man and Pietro believed that he thought someone Pietro’s age couldn’t possibly know what he was talking about.
“Indeed and you are so so far ahead of where he is already” Pietro sighed, “I have told the head trainers and they say there is little we can do for stubbornness, we have advised so we have done our part”
“It sounds like either he’s going to give up, or die trying. And more power to him either way.” Kate was actually fairly impressed with this guy, regardless. It would be a long, hard road… well, for the week that he was supposedly “training”... Kate was sure he was going to learn something from it either way.
“Aside from marathon trainers,” she said, moving back over to the treadmill to start jogging again. “How’s the job? You doing okay?”
“I would prefer him to give up and try again after a proper training period” Pietro said, it would be the best outcome though he imagined the man would damage something. It was almost inevitable.
“It is going good. And my university professors are pleased I am already working within a related area” he had been worried they might not approve so it had been a relief. “And your work? Lot’s of pretty dancers yes?” he winked.
“Or to postpone his marathon and start a slow training regimen?” Kate suggested, climbing onto the treadmill so she could start jogging again. Her breathing came labored much faster now. “That’s wonderful!” She beamed over at him. “I’m glad things are looking up for you! And yes…” She panted a little. Keeping up a conversation while jogging wasn’t easy. “Yes, lots of pretty dancers. Good tips, too. And I’m helping this guy Conner learn to control the powers he’s getting from the Dreams, so that’s fun, too…”
Pietro nodded, “That is what I mean. To give up this marathon so he has time to train properly for another one” It was just frustrating when people did not listen.
“You are a superpower mentor” he grinned at her, “That is impressive. What powers is he getting?” he asked curiously. Pietro didn’t need any help with his, super speed was pretty easy in the grand scheme of things but his sisters was far more complicated.
Kate understood. She’d been in those crunch positions, too, in her life. The ones where she didn’t give herself enough time to do anything properly when she had about a thousand things she wanted to do and no time to do them. But she was more reasonable than this man--at least, it sounded like.
“Super strength,” she puffed as she jogged, “super speed... all the super human stuff that could hurt someone if it goes off at the wrong time.” She gave him a grin. “We’re doing Tai Chi and yoga, and practicing his powers in a safe place.”
Kate at least had the sense not to risk her health, everybody rushed into things sometimes but most people didn’t do it with things that could give them a heart attack.
“Super speed huh? Maybe I could finally find someone to race me” Pietro mused, “Those things sound far too slow to me” he added with a grin, certain it was helpful but not something he was into.
“I’ll have to introduce you.” Kate said, giving him a smile. She was puffing and her heart thundering. It was probably time to slow down and take her heartrate--make sure she was in the proper range of heartbeats for her workout. “I’ll let you know one day when we’re having a session and you can come by.”
“That would be nice” Pietro nodded, watching in approval as she slowed down the treadmill. “As long as your friend would not mind it would be nice to meet him”
“I’m sure he wouldn’t, but I’ll double-check with him just to make sure.” Kate beamed, then the machine started to slow for her cooldown. “I’ll text you about it?”
“That is a good plan” he nodded, “I should leave you to it and check on the rest of the room, let me know if you need anything”
“Thanks, Pietro,” Kate grinned slowing her pace to a walk for her cooldown. She was happy to calm it down. Today’s workout felt kinda harder than normal. “I’ll see you later.”
“See you later Kate” Pietro said giving her a little grin before moving off.
