Having finally stopped having those irritating dizzy spells all the time, Emma had gotten herself back on her feet and was attempting to keep moderately active. She was all plump and round and sore a lot of the time, enough that she’d happily remain on the sofa with her puppy blankets and doze if it wasn’t the occasional bladder bounce and the fact that her hips hurt to do that too much. Besides, she needed to keep up some level of activity or she’d lose her mind. Since she wasn’t driving, thanks to the occasional jolt in her sciatic nerve, and since it was no longer the fourth coming of the apocalypse in Orange County, a walk was pretty much the best Emma could do. And walking was usually accompanied with a slight waddle. And to think there was still another three and change months to go with this. Bundled up in her almost but not quite maternity gear and the most comfortable pair of flat ankle boots the world had ever known, Emma had managed to wrangle some pirate company for the afternoon stroll, hardly exciting but hopefully productive enough. “So, how did the date go?” Because she couldn’t not ask about Killian and Regina’s Valentine’s Day date. A very pregnant Emma Swan, now wasn’t this the most adorable thing Killian had ever seen? He was happy for her though, and especially happy that she hadn’t become engulfed by darkness yet - it felt like the clock was ticking in that regard, or perhaps that ticking was a bomb about to blow. Difficult to say, but until they had all dreamed past the Camelot nonsense, then Killian was just going to continue to be on edge. When she invited him over, of course he went. He was still figuring out a decent ‘welcome to the world’ gift to give to the wee sprog she’d be popping out in a few months, and it was a work in progress. Something special was necessary, since this was no doubt going to be a very special baby. Sauntering alongside her, leather coat from his dreams thrown on over modern attire (jeans and a long-sleeved cable knit sweater), he stuck his good hand into the pocket, the metallic prosthetic on the left still visible. “It was a bloody disaster,” he chuckled wryly. “Well. Perhaps not entirely, but our outdoor dinner date ended up ruined by blood rain. We were covered in it so we tried to, ah, wash up at my place but that was interrupted when Kenzi came home. We settled for making our own dinner and then ‘just cuddling’ for the rest of the night.” He really did mean ‘just cuddling’ - because wild and raunchy sex to release tension while his sister was a few rooms away was just wrong. The full belly laugh was exactly that, as Emma hugged her tummy and let the grin almost split her face. When did anything go to plan here? But then, having his sister walk in on them again was just far too amusing to Emma. “Oh, you’re going to need to get her a bell or something.” She imagined he didn’t think he’d be getting cockblocked at this point by a younger sibling. Then again, she and Neal were constantly conscious of Henry and traumatising the poor thing. He was older, so he wasn’t completely unaware, but there were boundaries to figure out too. “I don’t think Kenzi would’ve let you live it down.” Teenagers, it reminded her of teenagers, sneaking around to avoid teasing. “I suppose it wasn’t the exciting first date you’d have planned.” Even if they could roll with it around these parts, it was still a bane. “Not exciting in the way I’d planned, no, but still exciting nonetheless,” Killian had to laugh about it too, because really, it was just so ridiculous. Of course their first ‘official’ date, on Valentine’s Day, would be ruined by an OC disaster and of course Kenzi would come home early to accidentally interrupt the raunchy shower fuck. A shame, because in that small space, the pirate would have made it work - he had been so close too, alas. The cookie crumbled that way here sometimes. At least there would be future dates - he was fairly certain of that, judging by what happened when he went to Regina’s place to show off what the dream fairy had bestowed upon him. “I gave her Liam’s ring,” he continued, those acidic blue eyes squinting thoughtfully. “Since it arrived here and everything. In Camelot, I gave it to you but...” he shrugged, “Things are different now. I hope you don’t mind too much?” Imagining the plans wasn’t really needed, Emma just gave a small chuckle, it was just like this place to put a twist on something. She couldn’t really talk though, she and Neal confessed their love in a tomb fighting RumpleGina, hardly a fairytale moment, but it was classic Orange County at this point. “I think, considering the differences, I’m not going to get too upset about you giving someone else your ring.” She could guess the connotations of it, considering the progression of their relationship in the dreams. Besides, she was sort of amused about it being Regina, and she was fairly certain that teasing would be fun when the doom and gloom that was looming went away. “Although I do have something to ask you, a very important something.” Killian lifted an eyebrow, walking alongside Emma. It was a pleasant day, and he was happy to accompany her while she waddled. Exercise was healthy for mum’s-to-be, he gathered. A good thing to keep the blood pressure down and the gestational diabetes at bay. He probably should have mentioned that he had her dagger - the ridged blade that rippled like skipping stones on water, her name scrawled on there. Having it must have happened for a reason, or it wouldn’t have showed up - but he didn’t want to put into words what his fear was, that the Dark One's Curse would find its way to her. “‘Course, Swan. Ask me anything,” he encouraged. By now, she was at liberty to do that, because there was very little Killian wouldn’t do for her. “So, Neal and I found out that we’re having a little boy,” she’d circled the baby on a copy of the scan, mostly so that she could repeatedly look and not squint at it trying to find her son, partly so she could work out what part was what to figure out how they were sure it was a boy. It was still tiny, so she wasn’t really sure about the details, but they were going with boy. “No names on the horizon just yet,” so the littlest prince was still getting randomly assigned endearments. “But well, we’d been talking and,” It was probably just as well they were out, wandering. She had plenty to sort of drift her attention back and forth on. Weird how it was a little awkward to ask. She wasn’t entirely sure how Neal and Killian were here; there were so many unresolved issues. But they’d agreed, with just how supportive and resourceful Killian was for Emma, in the dreams, never letting her give up and constantly there, they wanted to have similar people around their son. “We wanted to ask if maybe you would want to be his Godfather?” Alright, that was not something Killian expected Emma to ask. He’d heard that the bouncing baby was indeed a boy, and that was good news - also that the wee, developing sprog seemed to be healthy and was baking just fine in the baby oven. But to be his godfather? It...well, he was honoured to be asked, quite frankly. Now he would definitely have to think of something better to give the newest member of the family besides baby pirate gear. “You really want me to?” He sounded delighted, and pleased. “I never really considered myself father figure material, Swan.” Just look at the mess he made with Baelfire - but Neal seemed alright with Killian here. They’d have to sit down and talk about things, probably. But that was something the two of them would handle. “However...” He tossed her a crinkly-eyed grin. “I’d be honoured. Does that mean I...well, what does it mean for you two, exactly?” There had been no godfather for him, fairy or otherwise. “Please,” sure the pirate might not be the best role-model for any child, but then, neither was the Evil Queen. But it was about more than just a persona, “Henry adores you. Here and there.” Henry might never seen Hook as a father, but he was family, by this point even David felt like it, Emma was sure. “You are a good man, whatever you seem to continually think about yourself.” “Well, we’re hoping Regina will agree to be his Godmother.” Which, considering her baby excitement and the closeness between she and Neal, Emma didn’t see the former Queen turning them down in the least. “At the most extreme, we’re hoping it would mean that they’d both have guardians that would put their needs and well being first, if anything ever happened to Neal and I.” And sure, it was hopefully just this really far-fetched maybe, but sometimes Emma had wished she’d had that here, after her parents died. “Slightly less extreme, another ear to bend when it gets to that point, doting and showing favouritism?” Neither she nor Neal were overly religious, so there was no need to have someone leading them down the path towards embracing Christianity in the least. Live life without inflicting pain needlessly on others, that seemed all that anyone needed to know. Really, they were just looking towards an uncertain future all the time, hopefully making the right choices for keeping their family as whole as possible. It made sense to Killian - he wasn’t religious either (at all, really, having abandoned the notion of Irish Catholicism long ago) but he understood the logic. “Aye, you’ve got to be prepared if you’re going to raise a child here,” he pointed out. “Never know what could happen.” Of course he didn’t wish Swan or Neal any ill will, and he’d be devastated if something were to happen, but he could assure them that he’d be there for their child. “You gave me a chance to be a part of something, both here and there. So I promise I’ll be around, whether or not anything goes wrong. Both me and Regina, I’m sure, since no doubt she’d be delighted to be asked.” He knew those motherly instincts ran deep for her - she cherished her moments with Henry here, so glad to be a part of his life and that the lad at least knew who she was in that other realm a world away. It had worked out well. “Any spawn of yours is a favourite of mine anyway,” he chuckled, sliding an arm around her shoulders for a squeeze. “Do you need anything, since the due date is approaching?” Any ‘official’ godparent rituals or whatever the fuck happened wouldn’t take place until the sprog was born, obviously, but he thought he’d ask. Really, as much as Emma was hopeful that everything would turn out okay, that they’d weather this storm like they did all the others, it was important that the alternatives be considered, as uncomfortable as it might be. And there wasn’t a single person in the world that Emma thought would care more about Henry and his brother than Regina. She understood Neal’s thinking there. “She will be,” even if she tried to play it off as she wasn’t, Emma figured it was a way to really embrace Regina’s role over there and carry a little to here. “You’re both really the best people for it.” Maybe it was dreaming of Neverland, or maybe it had been travelling back in time and realising that Storybrooke and all those people were family, but she trusted both Killian and Regina with not only her life, but her children’s lives too. “We’re trying to find bits and pieces now. Neal talked to someone who might be able to make us a cot and rocking chair, something that’s just ours, you know?” Because the store ones were practical, yes, but Emma wanted something that was just for the little one, something special. “Starting on those family treasures and stuff.” Something that later, they could pass on for the next baby in the family or something. “Hm...well, perhaps I could use my one-handed blacksmith skills and figure something else out to help,” Killian quipped, giving it a think. It was partly a joke since the ‘one-handed blacksmith’ thing was how he’d met Emma originally, in the dreams, when he was working with Cora - not like she’d believed his story at the time, but still. The sentiment remained - he’d come up with something helpful for a nursery. Aha, then it came to him. “How about I knit him a blanket?” Killian asked, and before Emma could start laughing at the idea of him knowing how to knit, he actually explained. “I learned how in the Navy - most of us sailors do, you know. It’s a way to pass the time when we’re out at sea and goes all the way back to World War I - the Royal Navy’s got a history of it.” Who would have thought, right? “Anyway, I’ll put some red in it. Because in Ireland, red was believed to ward off faeries - not the Tinker Bell, happy ending types, but these would swoop into the nursery and swap out babies with changelings. So we don’t want that to happen,” he grinned. And he could knit with one hand too, just watch him - there were multiple ways to do it. A knitting loom, for one thing - this way, the baby would have another thing to add to the collection of family heirlooms because blankets could be kept always, and passed down. She was honestly about to laugh, nudge him and tell him to stop messing around, anything would do and be appreciated, especially when he mentioned knitting. “Seriously?” But her eyebrows raised in question. It was actually a great idea, because yes, that was something to keep through life, passing on. She knew that dream-Emma kept her baby blanket all her life, just because it was the one connection to family she had. This little one wouldn’t have those reasons, and even if it was a superstition with the faeries, it was something special. “Killian that would be amazing. Especially since I can’t even knit a scarf without it looking like someone got it stuck in a blender.” Inevitably her knits and purls got messed up and it just looked sad. “Avoiding baby swapping would be preferable, so whatever measures will be taken.” Even if it was a joke, it was cute. Something for him to be all wrapped up in, swaddled in his new cot at home in his nursery. “Can it be June yet?” A scarf stuck in a blender. Killian snorted a laugh, because Swan always had such a way with words. “Then I’ll certainly do it for the little shitter,” he promised fondly - that was what babies did. They shat and cried and spit up and did it all over again, in between bouts of sleep where they looked absolutely precious. He knew he’d be a sucker for any adorable little wrinkly blob of fat with eyes that he was a godfather to - and he’d teach the lad all sorts of other things, as he grew. The kind of things he went over with Henry sometimes now, since he was old enough - mostly he was just glad Henry here seemed to like him more than in the dreams, though it was probably because here his parents were together and Killian wasn’t trying to date his biological mum. “June will be here before we know it. I’m sure as it gets even closer, you’ll be ready to give the wee darling an eviction notice and push him out.” Emma had never felt like she should rush the pregnancy. She’d never really gotten to just enjoy being pregnant before, and so far this one had been really easy and fun, all things considered. Even with the threats that were building up and the worry, she was sure to enjoy the last few months. It didn’t make her any less impatient to get to hold her baby and see him. Maybe more so now that she knew it was a boy too. “Kind of glad I won’t be pregnant all the way through summer too.” Although she doubted she’d be enjoying a beach any time soon either. “Too hot and sticky. And that’s without lugging around a bowling ball for it.” Her back was starting to get that sore and tight way a lot, “I might have to delegate nappy duty for you guys though, just so I can continue to romanticise this whole thing.” “Oh, of course. Been awhile since I’ve changed a nappy,” Killian said thoughtfully - actually, the more he considered it, the more he realised that he hadn’t ever changed a nappy. Regina would give him some tips, and help him out at first - if he could handle knitting a blanket, he could handle the less-than-clean aspects of childcare. Like piss flying everywhere from that little winkie that you had to point south so you didn’t get sprayed in the face. He took a deep breath, letting everything settle. It would be good, what was to come in the future - for once, he actually felt happy about things rather than dreading them; he wasn’t living from one job to the next, confined to the shadows. “And I’ll still bring you back a souvenir from Ireland, as promised. Something shamrock. We leave on the 14th of March, and will be there for St. Paddy’s Day.” No green beer though, much to Kenzi’s disappointment - unless you were in tourist trap pubs of Dublin, which Killian would rather avoid. It seemed like a lot of them would be turning to Regina for tips, which was strange, since she didn’t have any kids either. She had the memories of raising Henry, Emma had distance ones of the fake life Regina had given her and Henry for a while, but that was about it. “Lots of trial and error going to happen soon, I think.” So long as they didn’t drop him, right? Babies were sturdy, and there was only so much they could go wrong with. Emma was looking forward to the baby smell and the cuddles and maybe even the constant feeding. “If you can bring yourself to buy something ridiculously tacky, I will have that.” She’d used to collect things from states as she passed through, postcards or magnets, key chains. But then it felt like she was dragging her past around with her, and she didn’t want to do that either. That didn’t mean she’d lost her appreciation for very tacky little things. “You guys just remember not to drain Ireland dry, okay?” Killian snickered in amusement. “Will do,” he assured. “I’ve cut back a lot anyway. We both have, which is pleasant. Saves the wallet quite a bit, when you stop and consider how much you were spending on alcohol before.” Whiskey for breakfast got to be quite expensive after awhile - not to mention he felt healthier too, and not so tired all the time. Eating properly, at regular intervals, gave you energy to tackle the day. “Well, Swan. Shall we head back? I can sketch baby blanket designs for you. I’m a regular Granny Nanny, really.” Perhaps not the best reputation for a cutthroat pirate to have, but there were just multiple sides to him, that was all. It was good to hear, that he wasn’t drinking like a fish as much, and that Kenzi was too. Possibly just as well if they were hitting up Ireland during St Patrick’s day. It was literally an excuse to drink. “Well, so long as you two have fun.” Since she knew very little about Killian’s brother, other than his importance in Killian’s life, it was nice that here he had Kenzi for sibling-stuff. “Since the baby has found my bladder, I think that’s a good idea.” She could do with a seat too, since she was absolutely hitting the ‘ow my feet’ stage of the day. “I’ll make you a hot chocolate while you wow me with your old lady skills.” “Hot chocolate? How could I turn that down?” Killian asked rhetorically, but he really couldn’t. It wasn’t where he would have said he saw himself in five years, if you’d asked him all that time ago (meaning, settled in one spot, dreaming of being Captain Hook, one-handed, reunited with a long-lost sibling, in something resembling an actual relationship, and about to become a godfather) but that was alright. It wasn’t where he thought he’d be, but it sort of felt meant to be. |
