Aside from the odd dream she’d had, River was enjoying her time in Orange County. It had been awhile since she’d taught a class and getting the chance now was extremely relaxing. There was nothing River loved more than unearthing something that had been buried for centuries and learning everything she could about it, she enjoyed teaching others the things she enjoyed learning about. Of course there was more to it than just lecturing, but River also enjoyed reading her students’ papers and grading their exams because it gave her the opportunity to find out if they were paying attention to the things she was teaching them.
Grading was what she was currently doing as she sat in the cafe not too far from the campus. She had a little over an hour between two of her classes on this day and while the cafe could be a little loud at times, she preferred it to the silence of her office. Sure, she could simply put on the radio, but there was just something about being out in public instead of locked away from the world.
After retrieving her herbal tea from the counter, Wanda looked around for a place to sit, but found no tables spare. Quickly looking over the occupiers of the remaining tables, Wanda spotted someone she thought she recognised from the university. Moving over slowly, she quietly asked, “Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?” while referring to the spare seat opposite the lady.
River looked up at the sound of a woman’s voice and smiled before taking a quick glance around. She noticed that the remainder of the coffee shop was full and figured that must have been why the other woman had asked to join her, “Of course.” She moved a few papers to give the woman a space at the table, “I guess this is their busy time.”
“Thanks,” Wanda smiled at her as she sat down, trying to take up as little room as possible so she didn’t interrupt the lady too much. “Seems like it,” she replied politely. she caught a glimpse of some of the writing on the papers. “Are you a teacher?” she asked curiously.
River nodded in response to the question, “I am. Professor River Song.” She said, smiling as she set aside the essay she had been reading, “Professor of Archaeology at UC Irvine.” River picked up her tea cup and took a sip as she watched the other woman.
“Nice to meet you Professor Song, I’m Wanda Maximoff,” she introduced, holding her cup up in greeting before taking a sip herself. “I thought you looked familiar, I’m studying Neurology at Irvine,” she grinned.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Wanda. Neurology, huh? How fascinating.” River said, taking another sip of her tea before placing it back down on the table, “Do you want to become a doctor?” She was always interested in finding out why people chose the majors that they did. Whether it had been chosen by them or, in some cases, for them.
“I would, I love finding out how the mind works, how we think, and all of that,” Wanda explained happily. “And you? Have you been on archaeological digs? That must involve a fair amount of travelling, I bet you’ve been to some amazing places!” Wanda enthused.
“That’s fantastic. The way I see it, we need more female doctors.” River smiled and took another sip of her drink, “Oh I’ve been on more digs than I can count. I can’t even describe some of the things I’ve seen. It would take far more time than I’m sure you have today.” Once River started talking about some of the places she’d been and things she’d seen, she could go on forever.
“I would love to hear your stories. Could I perhaps invite you for dinner and we can talk about them some more?” Wanda offered. “It would just be me and my brother,” she smiled at her.
“And you’re sure my stories wouldn’t bore your brother? They can be quite long,” If there was one thing River loved, it was talking about her travels, which was one thing she did often in class. “What does he do?”
“Pietro knows not to be rude,” Wanda grinned, looking down at her drink as she swilled it in her cup. “Besides, he’s the one who told me that I needed to get out more so he should be insanely happy for me,” she shrugged as she told River. “Pieto is studying kinesiology. He’s very active, runs marathons, well, runs everywhere,” she joked.
River’s brows rose slightly, “Impressive. Well, I’d love to meet your brother and regale you both with stories of my travels.” She smirked and set down her cup as she searched for a blank piece of paper then slid it over to Wanda with a pen, “Why don’t you give me your number and I’ll let you know when I’m free.” Teaching did give River much more down time than traveling had, but she still had a full plate with grading and planning lesson plans so she’d have to take a look at her calender.
“Great!” Wanda smiled with a little bounce in her seat. She slid the paper towards her with one hand and put her cup down with the other. Picking up the pen, she wrote down her mobile number and email address before sliding it back to her. “The only night I’m not free is monday night as I have an exercise class, otherwise I’ll just be studying,” she smiled and shrugged.
“Fantastic. I’ll check my schedule and let you know.” River smiled then glanced at her watch, “I should get going, but it was very nice to meet you, Wanda.” She began gathering the papers and things that were on the table and put them into her bag, “I look forward to seeing you again.” Once her things were all squared away, she slung her bag over her shoulder and picked up her drink, “And perhaps we’ll see one another on campus before that.”
“Absolutely,” Wanda smiled at River and waved as she headed out the door. Or perhaps she should think of her as Professor Song instead. She'd have to ask Pietro.
