Maes hoped that he'd lucked out with his posting to the network about finding an artist. Ever since his talk with Riza, he had begun to look forward to seeing what some people might come up with. Elicia had also been excited about the prospect of having something different in her room. Regardless of her age, she was full of opinions about what she wanted too, which was completely fine by Maes. He wanted to make sure that she enjoyed it, and that it would be something that she could live with for the next few years at least. Gracia was excited to look for new linens for Elicia's room, and so after the meeting, the family had planned on going out to look for those and spend the rest of the day together.
Only one person had responded, but Justin seemed like a nice guy and Maes really was looking forward to seeing what he was capable of.
He'd taken the day off in order to meet with him, and he'd shown up to the agreed Starbucks a few minutes early to get himself a coffee. The pastries were awfully tempting, but he was admittedly full from breakfast that morning.
Grabbing a table, Maes pulled the top off his coffee so that it would cool quicker while he waited on Justin to arrive.
When Justin had seen the post asking about doing a mural, he’d responded right away. He hadn’t done many murals, but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t do it; he was an artist after all. It was simply be a slightly bigger canvas than he usually worked with, but it’d be fun. Well, if he got the gig of course. That was the whole reason he was walking into the Starbucks with one of his sketchpads under his arm. He’d had to go through his sketchpads the night before to find one that didn’t have any questionable sketches such as naked men, namely Brian or Billy, which he had a tendency to do. Not that he’d drawn much of Billy at all lately. But that didn’t mean there weren’t older sketches in other sketchpads.
Spotting the man he was there to meet, Justin headed to the counter first to get a coffee then made his way towards the table, “Maes?” He was pretty sure he had the right guy, but it didn’t hurt to make sure.
There were a lot of thoughts bouncing around in Maes's head. About his family, the network and all of the craziness that was posted about dreams and whatnot. Luckily he'd not experienced any of those for himself, but he'd seen his fair share of people that'd appeared to be suffering from them.
Nightmares was what a lot of them sounded like, if Maes was being truthful. It didn't seem to him as if a lot of people got happy endings, or something to that effect. Either way, aes was just grateful for his lack of strange dreams. He'd stick to his usual ones.
Maes glanced over as someone spoke his name, a wide smile on his face. Nodding, he stood, and held out his hand. "Justin, I presume?" He was terribly excited for this meeting, and hopeful as well. "Sorry I didn't grab you a coffee, I wasn't sure what you'd like, but any refills or whatever else you might like is on me." He moved to sit back down in his seat, finally picking up his own coffee to take a ginger sip. "How long have you been an artist?"
“That’d be me.” Justin set his cup down on the table and shook Maes’ hand, “And that’s alright. I didn’t mind getting my own coffee.” Taking the seat across from Maes, Justin placed the closed sketchpad on the table beside the cup, “According to my mom, I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I took classes in highschool then went to art school after and have been doing storyboarding for a couple different tv shows over the last couple of years. I’ve even been in a few art shows.”
"That is impressive. I could imagine that the storyboarding bit is an interesting job." Maes offered Justin a wide smile, sincerely impressed by the accomplishments and experience that he spoke of. Maes couldn't draw to save his life, but he felt confident that he'd found someone that could do exactly what he was envisioning for Elicia's room. "My daughter is excited about the mural. She overheard me and my wife talking about it." Maes couldn't help but chuckle, and lifted a shoulder. "I'm excited too. Can I see some of your work?"
“Sure.” Justin slid the sketchpad across the table to Maes, “The storyboarding is fun. I’ve met a few actors as a result of it.” Honestly Justin just enjoyed the fact that he could do what he loved on an almost daily basis. He might not always be doing his own thing, but at least he never got rusty, “What do you have in mind for the mural? Like what’s the big picture?” He knew that Maes had asked on the network for something specific, but he was curious if there was more to it than that.
Maes gave a small nod, all the while keeping a smile on his face. It was good to see someone who loved their work. Maes enjoyed his work as well, and honestly wouldn't want to be doing anything else. He pulled the sketchpad closer to him, and began to idly flip through it. "I want something pretty." He laughed softly with a roll of his eyes, "My wife and I have been talking, and the wall opposite her bed is fairly large. So along with a field of flowers, including sunflowers, and unicorn, perhaps a princess and castle in the background? Really, if you have any other ideas for cute things? I'm all ears." Maes was very easy going when it came to most things, he just wanted something that Elicia would like.
Justin watched as Maes looked through the sketchpad, nodding as he listened to what he wanted, “I could draw up some things and send them to you then you could decide what you want or if you wanted anything changed on them.” Justin hadn’t done a mural in awhile so he was hoping that he would get the chance to do this. He didn’t always get the chance to do something this big.
Maes finished flipping through the sketchbook, satisfied with what he saw, and he carefully closed it before sliding it back over to Justin. "That sounds like an excellent idea to me! We're not in any real hurry, I just wanted to find someone to do the work first, and hash out details. We'll be repainting her room this weekend. Is there a type of paint that'll be easier for you to work on?"
Justin shook his head, “Most paint you’d get at a hardware store can be painted over. So you should be fine.” He took the sketchpad back and slipped it back into his bag before taking out his phone, “If you want to give me your number, I can text you when I have some sketches drawn up.” It’d be easier than trying to contact the other man on Valarnet.
With a nod, Maes took that little bit of information into consideration. "That's good to know." He shifted slightly in his seat, leaning forward a bit to pick up his coffee before taking a sip. After he swallowed, he rattled off his number to Justin. "Contact me anytime. I've always got my phone on me." Even when he was at work, and supposed to be working Maes could be found checking his phone for missed calls or messages. Or you know, making phone calls or sending texts. "Thank you, Justin. I'm glad you contacted me. I look forward to working with you."
Justin typed in Maes' number under a new contact then sent him a text, "And now you have my number." He turned off the phone and slipped it back into his bag, "No problem. I'm looking forward to doing this." He was glad that he'd seen Maes' post and was going to start sketching when he got home.
