Splendid had sent text messages to both Furiosa, and Capable telling them that she believed that she was going into labor. The pains had been different from the Braxton Hicks she'd had earlier in the week that she'd neglected to tell anyone about. She'd sent Max a text message as well, letting him know exactly what was going on because she'd come to see him as a friend just like the two women.
Splendid did ask Furiosa if she would drive her to the hospital as her contractions worsened. She, personally, didn't want to be driving and have to pull off the side of the road in order to deliver her child. That -- that was a bit ridiculous to her. The bag was packed, sitting by the door of her apartment, and she didn't dare think about how barren his room was right now. Instead, she focused on her breathing while she looked out the window, waiting on Furiosa to arrive.
Furiosa had stared at the text messages, than at the flat tire on her car. It was with a heavy sigh that she sprinted towards the War Rig. It was a bit of a sensation in the neighborhood - she’d brought it back for the weekend until she could figure out a permanent storage solution. And now it was going to serve as Splendid’s chariot to the hospital. Wouldn’t that be a sight? At least no war parties were after them, and she hastily threw in some blankets and cushions to make Splendid more comfortable if necessary.
She started it, the failsafe code so second nature that it actually gave her pause. Then she threw the rig into gear and floored it towards Splendid.
Pacing, Splendid took in deep breaths, just trying to keep herself calm. She began to fan herself with one hand. God, it was hot in her place, or at least, it felt like it was. Her blood pressure was up, she could feel it, and she needed to calm down.
It was hard, considering everything. The dreams she had the night before had rattled her, but she hadn't been willing to admit that she'd had them just yet. Too many people talked about having them on the network, and she just wasn't honestly sure what they meant. Making her way back to the window, she waited still, hoping that Furiosa would get there soon enough.
The Rig caused the windows to rattle as it pulled up. Furiosa rolled the window down and leaned out. She didn’t want to honk the horn if she could help it, so she left it idling and climbed down. Making her way up to the door, she knocked, and hoped that the sight of the War Rig wouldn’t freak Splendid out. But Splendid typically had an even head, Furiosa reasoned. It wouldn’t be too bad.
“Splendid?” She called out. “Sorry about the ride, my car had a flat.”
The rumbling caused Splendid's brows to raise, and at the sight of the War Rig her mouth dropped open into an O shape. "Oh my God." Now that was definitely surprising.
It took Splendid a few moments before she pulled herself away from her window, and moved to grab her bag. Pulling the door open, she gave Furiosa a look. "It's okay, just, shocking." She let out a soft laugh before her stomach hardened again into another contraction. She breathed through it, waiting until it passed. "Just as long as I can get up in it? I'm fine."
“I’ll help you up if you want. We’ll get through this. We’ll get a lot of weird looks, but we’ll get through it.” Furiosa eyed the Rig, then nodded for Splendid to follow her. “I uh..put a nest back there if you need it. You can sit up front if you want.” She remembered Splendid as someone who liked to fend for herself, and she understood the desire for autonomy. She jogged around to open the passenger door.
"I'd appreciate it." Splendid replied with a nod, following after Furiosa. A light smile crossed her lips at the thoughtfulness that she'd put into helping her out. Splendid honestly couldn't ask for better people in her life, even though she never thought that she'd have people like that in her life again. It was nice. She put her bag down on the sidewalk, and put one foot up onto the step up before starting to haul herself up into the rig.
Once Splendid was settled, Furiosa put her bag in the rig and closed the door. Racing around to the driver’s side, she climbed in and put the vehicle into gear. The Rig rumbled down the street, with people peering out their windows at the odd, post-apocalyptic sight. Furiosa steadfastly ignored them.
Splendid breathed out slowly, shifting in her seat to find a more comfortable spot. Of course, getting comfortable was nearly impossible. Instead, she looked out the window, trying to focus on something, anything to keep her mind occupied. "You're right," she commented after a few silent moments, "it does ride rather smoothly."
“Hard to not feel like a badass, looking at the world from up here.” The hospital wasn’t much farther, and traffic tended to make way for the Rig to get past. It was an intimidating road warrior, after all. Part of Furiosa really enjoyed that.
Laughing softly, Splendid nodded. "You have a good point there." She didn't believe anyone would get in the way of the rig, considering. Splendid kept watching the road as they passed, trying to keep her mind preoccupied as they continued on their way to the hospital. "Capable is going to come sit with me." She glanced over at Furiosa, and she was ever so thankful to have help with everything.
Furiosa remained silent for a few moments, turning something over in her head. “Do you want me to sit with you too?” She left it an open question, not wanting to pressure Splendid. She wasn’t sure if she was welcome, she didn’t know her as well as she did in the dreams.
Splendid glanced over at her, "That's up to you. I don't mind if you do or not." She smiled softly over at Furiosa, "It'll probably be rather boring at some points. Especially if I'm not dilated enough." That was a real concern, but she knew it was time to go in. Splendid kept rubbing her hand over her belly, breathing out slowly with each contraction. "But you're more than welcome to stay." Even though they didn't know each other that well, Splendid really did consider her to be a friend.
She really did appreciate that. She glanced at Splendid and smiled. “I’d like to. I don’t mind a little boring every once in awhile.”
