When Leon had first brought Veronica into the station, he had been determined to drop some charges on her - assault with a weapon, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer with a weapon - but Stu, a guy who Leon normally didn’t like but had become one of the least irritating people in the precinct somehow over the last week, had talked him out of it. Arresting another cops girlfriend was probably a bad call, imagine all the workplace drama, I thought you and Logan were friends, etc. etc. None of that mattered to Leon - if someone broke the law the deserved to be locked up, friend or lover or whatever - but he was frankly too tired of all the bullshit he had gone through that day to work up the energy to argue with him.
They could hold Veronica until Sunday without charges being pressed, and Leon had Saturday off so he had taken the day to go to the gym and sit in a hottub because he had woken up feeling kind of like he had been hit by a truck. Fucking Veronica and her fucking taser, why the hell had she even been carrying it?
When Sunday rolled around, Leon woke up and realized he had kind of been an asshole to all of his friends during the last week. Like, a huge asshole. So first, he had phoned Chris at summer camp and had begged for forgiveness (he probably didn’t need to apologize, Chris was pretty quick to forgive his older brother, but Leon had still felt like an ass and was definitely going to surprise Chris with a new video game or something when the kid came home), then he had called the guys at the precinct and told them that he wasn’t going to be pressing charges against Veronica. Not because she was his friend, or because she was Logan’s girlfriend, but because he figured that if he had been affected by whatever was going around the Network, she probably had been too and he probably couldn’t entirely blame her for that. Then he texted Sharon to apologize, and went over to the apartment to surprise her and properly apologize with bagels and coffee.
Frankly, he was still pissed off at Veronica. He might have been a little crabby with her, but she had been just as crabby back and she had tased him for absolutely no reason. He had been grouchy, but at least he hadn’t attacked anyone. And he was still sore. And his t-shirt still had holes in it. He probably should have expected that it would be Veronica who answered the door.
Fucking OC and it’s craziness. The past week had been a bad one. She had been a complete and total bitch to everyone she cared about. Hell she had even treated Backup like complete shit, practically giving him away to a total stranger because she couldn’t stand him anymore. Thank God Sharon and Viv had been gone most of the week. But Kate and Leon had gotten the worst of it. Particularly Leon. Well Kate had been tased too, but she had punched Veronica. She still had the black eye to prove it. They had already texted and made up. Leon was just doing his job. Why Veronica had felt the need to tase the both of them she had no clue, but she had some serious making up to do.
She had no idea how she was going to make it up to him, which was why she hadn’t contacted her cop friend (former friend?) just yet. There was a knock on the door, she figured it was Tom coming to ask her some other ridiculous favor. Though what could top being a groomsman (groomswoman?) she had no idea. Or maybe Logan coming to tease her about getting arrested. She wouldn’t put that past him. The last person she was expecting to see when she opened the door was Leon. Though she shouldn’t have been surprised considering he was best friends with her best friend and roommate.
“Come to arrest me again?” she quipped.
Okay, Veronica. Not off to the best start.
She opened the door a bit wider so he could enter. That’s when she noticed the goodies in his hand. Okay there was no way those were for her. She wasn’t stupid. Plus she may have heard about the muffin incident. It was clearly a peace offering meant for the other blonde resident. “Sharon finally got Viv down. I think she’s out too,” since the only time Sharon really slept was when Viv did.
“You’re welcome to wait. I promise not to tase you again.” She joked and it wasn’t like she had gotten her taser back anyway. Of course she had others but Leon didn’t know that. But then she grew serious. No more quips. Time to own up to what she had done. “I’m sorry about that,” her tone was sincere. “Can I buy you a new shirt?”
“Why, are you planning on assaulting me again?” Leon snapped as he walked into the apartment. It wasn’t the best start, and really only served to put Leon on the defensive, and he glowered at her even after she promised not to tase him again.
Though once ‘I’m sorry’ was out of her lips, Leon relaxed a little, shoulders dropping a touch, and he even offered her a very small smile. “Yeah, well, you know this place. I’m sorry for being kind of nasty during the whole thing.” He wasn’t going to apologize for the arrest, because it was a good arrest. And he wasn’t going to apologize for tasing her because even if he had mostly done it out of anger, he probably would have done the same thing if he’d had all his wits about him. Trying to tangle with a hostile suspect when you could barely stand up from being tased would rarely turn out well, even if Veronica was pretty tiny compared to him. But, well, had he been in his right mind he probably wouldn’t have been quite as much of a dick while arresting a friend. “You don’t have to do that though. I mean, I’m not going to say no, but it’s not necessary.”
Well clearly Leon was still pissed. Not that she could really blame him. Leon may have been an ass, but Veronica was the wrong one in the scenario. Leon was doing his job. Even if Veronica hadn’t exactly been in her right mind thanks to whatever fucked up OC thing was making her even more bitchy than usual she couldn’t just blame that. She could take responsibility for her actions.
“You were doing your job,” she shrugged. “Aren’t cops supposed to be dicks anyway?” okay so she couldn’t help but tease a little bit. Yeah she was supposed to be apologetic and all, but she was still Veronica. Besides she was just teasing. It wasn’t like that was her honest opinion of all police. Just the ones in her dreams. But in real life some of the most important men in her life were cops. Her dad, her boyfriend, Leon. “You were pretty pissed about the shirt,” Veronica commented. “The least I could do it get you a new one. “And beer? I’d offer a lifetime supply but I can’t afford that. A case?” Then they should be good, right? Any other week she wouldn’t go around tasing her friends. No it wasn’t an excuse, but still something had made her crazy.
“Not when they’re arresting their friends,” Leon muttered. He wasn’t sunshine and rainbows when arresting the average Joe; he tended to be kind of aggressive and maybe a little rougher than he needed to be if they annoyed him (which they often did). But when arresting a friend he could probably at least give a genuine ‘sorry.’ Luckily enough for Veronica, Leon really wasn’t the type of guy who’d hold a grudge. He was more the type of person who’d fight with a friend, punch them a couple of times, and then grab a beer, so long as whoever was at fault apologized after. “A case of beer and a cool t-shirt and we can probably call it even though.” The coolness of the t-shirt was questionable, given the fact that Leon was currently wearing a t-shirt that involved a bear grilling a hamburger. “Though, if I keep holding out, are you going to keep sweetening the pot? Because papa could probably go for a new pair of sunglasses, too.”
“You shouldn’t have to arrest your friends,” at least not this one. Sure she got into her fair share of trouble in the dreams, but at least that was usually when she was trying to find a killer. Not when she was out tasing friends for no reason.
Veronica sighed as she walked over to the fridge and grabbed two beers. One for the each of them, obviously. Now that Viv was born Sharon could drink too. It helped with lactation or something. Veronica kind of tuned that shit out sometimes, but the point was there was beer in the apartment again thank the lord.
She handed one over to Leon. “A cool t-shirt? Or a Leon t-shirt?” she teased. She couldn’t handle much more of the apologizing. It was done with as far as she was concerned. “I think the pot is already sweet enough,” Veronica added with a smirk using the counter to pop the top off her bottle.
Leon frowned. Between Revy here and D in his dreams, apparently hanging out with ex/future cons was something he was getting into the habit of. Not that he considered either one of them his friend, but getting familiar with people he might possibly (or in D’s case, would most definitely) arrest someday was something Leon should get used to. “Sometimes shit happens,” Leon said. “When it comes down to it though, I’m glad it was Orange County fuckery and I don’t actually have to lock you up and throw away the key.”
Leon very happily took the beer from Veronica. There really was no better way than to make up with a friend than over a bottle of cold beer. He did shot Veronica an offended look at her comment though. “What do you mean by that? Those things are one in the same. Seriously though Veronica, you don’t need to get anything. I really just wanted an apology. You could probably go for a new pair of sunglasses though. That’s one helluva shiner.”
“Believe me, I’m glad about that too,” Veronica agreed taking a seat on the couch. “If it makes you feel any better I was only extra bitchy to the people I care about. People I don’t give a shit about just got my usual sparkling personality,” she smirked at that comment.
She raised a brow at him looking the shirt he was already wearing up and down. “I think you and I have different definitions of cool,” she quipped, smirk still on her face. Now that the apology was out of the way it felt good to joke with her friend again. Veronica was more than ready for everything to just go back to normal. “I don’t know. I thought it was pretty sexy. Makes me look tough.”
“Now that you mention it, I think that was true for me too.” He had been pretty friendly to Veronica’s friend, and the guys at the station who normally pissed him off were the most tolerable guys around for the entire week that Leon had been off his rocker. He owed a lot of guys doughnuts.
“Different definitions of sexy too, from the sounds of it,” Leon snorted. “Either way, I hope you don’t have to be in court until it clears up.” There was a moment when he contemplated what he said, and then grinned. “On second thought, maybe it might work out better for my team if you do.”
“Maybe it’s only sexy on guys,” she shrugged a smirk on her lips before giving him a light punch on the shoulder. “I’ll still win. Black eye or not. Never underestimate Veronica Mars,” and then a frown formed on her face. “Okay, remind me to never talk about myself in third person again.”
“I’m going to go with ‘not sexy on anyone’ but maybe that’s just me,” Leon said, taking the punch with a grin. “And careful Mars, you’re turning into a regular supervillian. ‘You’ll regret the day you crossed Veronica Mars.’” He was glad that things seemed to be normal between him and Veronica again. “Oh, by the way, if you tase me again, it’s friends off. I don’t care if it is some weird magical spell that makes everyone lose their damn minds.” Well, he’d probably give her some leeway if that was the case again.
“You’re a better detective than I thought,” she teased. “Caught my secret identity and everything. Innocent blonde lawyer by day, taser happy supervillian by night. Out to rid the world of cops.” Like Leon she was also glad things were back to normal between the two of them. She knew him because of Sharon and Logan, but he was rapidly becoming one of her close friends too. Losing that because the OC decided to fuck with them would have been a real downer.
“Well, thanks,” she replied sarcastically. “I’ll do my best to resist the urge to tase you. It’s not always easy,” more teasing. She finished off her beer and sighed. “I should probably get going. I promised my dad I’d stop by today.”
Leon couldn’t help but laugh, trying hard to make sure it wasn’t his loud laugh so he didn’t wake Sharon and Viv (again. No doubt that would go over just swell). “It’s those good instincts of mine,” Leon grinned. “I can sniff out a supervillian a mile away. I’ve got my eye on you,” he said, completely with the two fingered ‘eye on you’ sign. “See you around, ‘Ron. Have fun at your dads.”
