Nina had planned on going home and crying into ice cream but Henry was with Audrey and she kind of needed to see her best friend right now anyway. So she used her key and went inside. Henry was watching television so she sought out Audrey in the kitchen, “Hey Aud” she said with a sad little smile before she started crying.
“Hey.” Audrey was in the kitchen, cleaning up after the day’s activities. Henry had finished icing cookies at the table and went into the living room to watch television. Ben was sitting in his high chair chasing cheerios around the tray. When she saw Nina start to cry, Audrey dropped everything and rushed to her friend. “What is it?”
“I don’t know what to do” she said, hugging her friend, “He’s never spoken to me like that before” she sniffed, rubbing at her eyes with a hand. Before explaining to Audrey what had happened, how she’d been called into work and Gabe had been all grumpy because they’d needed to rearrange their date the night before. Then he’d not answered her calls so she’d gone over and he’d had a go at her again this time about taking in Henry which had led to him accusing her of not being able to say no to people and that it was obviously more important to her. “Then he just left the room. But it was the tone he spoke to me with, like he hated me”
Audrey wrapped her arms around her friend and held her tightly. She had no idea what to do. Nina wasn’t the type to cry over just anything, so this must have been really important. Really big. She gently shushed Nina, trying to calm her down. “I’m sure he doesn’t hate you,” she responded. “Maybe he’s just having a bad day. Give it a little time and try calling him?” She suggested.
Nina definitely wasn’t the sort to cry over nothing and this truly had shook her to the core. She’d placed so much trust and love in Gabe that it had hurt so much when he’d spoken to her like she was nothing. She nodded, “Okay” she hiccuped, “I’m sorry, crying all over you like a child”
“No no,” Audrey said, finally pulling back a little to look into her friend’s eyes. “Don’t be silly. You can cry at me anytime. But you’ll understand why I’m so worried.” She pulled back and moved to wipe her hands on a towel. They were still a little damp from the dishes she’d been washing. “Do you want a cookie? Henry and I made cookies. And we can talk about it.”
Nina smiled, she was so glad to have Audrey here. Reconnecting with her friend had been wonderful and she didn’t know what she’d do without her. “Cookies sound wonderful. Has Henry been okay? I am grateful that you could look after him this morning” Not that it had been necessary after all, she needn’t have bothered speaking to Gabe at all. That thought made her sad.
“Yes, it’s no problem,” Audrey said, motioning to the living room. “He’s a great kid. He’s a whiz with the frosting, too,” she added, beaming, as she motioned to the cookies on the table. They had different designs of frosting and sprinkles on them, different colors, too. “And he’s good with Ben.”
Nina smiled, “That’s good. I don’t want him to be worried or upset about anything. The cookies look great” she added, wiping her eyes and taking a deep breath, “Well Ben is just a delight so that isn’t a surprise right baby boy?” she said moving to press a kiss to his head. Nina had taken to being an Aunt instantly and loved Audrey and Merlin’s child very much.
Ben was still chasing Cheerios around the tray on his high chair. He looked up and over, making grabby fingers at Nina when she came closer. He started to babble in baby talk at her.
“Well, here,” Audrey tugged some Kleenex from a box, wetted one of them, and handed them over to Nina. “You can wipe your tears away. I don’t think he’ll be worried. He won’t even notice! He’s having fun watching television.”
Nina took the tissue and smiled, “Thank you Aud, you’re the best” she said, giving her friend a quick hug. “Thank goodness for television” she added with an affectionate smile towards the living room before she sat down near Ben and babbled back at him.
