He hadn’t really thought about it, but while he was happy for Kitty and Gaz, it was still weird that Kitty was sleeping with a woman he’d slept with. Logan tossed his cigar on the ground and put it out. He didn’t bother to knock, simply letting himself into Gaz’s place. “Gaz? I’m here. Where are you darlin?”
The sound of growling and the dark shadows coming from the bedroom were a clue. She stomped out to the living room, still wearing the t-shirt and undies she’d been wearing when Kitty poofed. “I still can’t find her.” Her voice was oddly sad for sounding so demony.
Logan sniffed. She’d definitely been here. There was the scent of Kitty and Gaz and the residual scent of the kind of thing he didn’t want to think about when it involved the two of them. “Did you see it happen? You said she went kinda blue?”
The younger woman looked exhausted, and she leaned against the wall. “Yeah. We were... then she just ... was gone.”
"She say anything? Facial expressions?" Logan came over, putting a hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure it out. Stranger shit has happened and Kitty is too stubborn to just fade away. Not after everything that's happened."
“She looked kind of at peace,” Gaz sighed. “Confused, but not scared.”
“Didn’t go ghost then.” Logan rubbed at his chin. He wished Moira or someone were here. Dr. Strange. Hank. “We need someone sciency. Or magicky.” Lifting his head, he called out. “Kitty this ain’t funny! Come out!”
“I’m demony, it’s not quite magic.” Gaz sighed, walking toward the kitchen to pour herself a drink. “You want a beer?”
“Does Kitty code in her underwear?” Logan walked into the bedroom, looking around. He scratched at his jaw. “You know, I’ve heard of her phasing mid-coitus before, but ascending to a higher plane, that’s a new one.”
Kitty liked to brag.
The display on Gaz’s coffee maker started to show ‘hello hello hello’.
“All the time, yeah - “ Gaz blinked. “Hey, c’mere.” She uncapped both of the beers while making a weird face at the coffee maker. “Can she get stuck in coffee makers?”
Logan came in and looked at the coffee maker. “Not normally.” He looked around as more hellos came across various appliances. Then Gaz’s phone text tone beeped.
The message read: Ever hold the universe in your hands?
“NO. NOW GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW YOUNG LADY.” Gaz tried the Demon Voice, hoping it would help. Never mind the fact that Kitty was older than Gaz. “Logan’s here, and he’s grumpy.”
“Well we can’t have that.” Kitty’s voice sounded from the door of the bedroom. “Did you like the spooky electronics thing? Should I have gone with the blue glowy instead? All Jedi.”
Gaz turned her head. “Baby?” She finally perked up, and raced toward the bedroom. It was odd, but she hadn’t realized how attached she was to Kitty until that moment.
“I’m okay.” Kitty caught Gaz practically in mid leap, kissing her fiercely. Something about seeing Gaz like this, the way she’d said ‘baby’ made her heart clench. “I just...it took me a bit to figure out how to… be me again.”
Wrapping her arms around Kitty tightly, Gaz closed her eyes hard against tears. She’d all but forgotten Logan was still there at all. “What happened?”
“I dreamed about this...thing. The Black Vortex. It grants you all the power you could ever want, whether you want it or not.” She lifted her thumbs to Gaz’s face, brushing away the tears. “It was beautiful Gaz. I saw… all the mes. Everywhere and every when, on every version of Earth you could think of. We became each other. We held the universe in the palms of our hands and for this...brief moment, I understood everything. I could see into… the heart of everything. The dreams, why we’re here.” She tapped Gaz’s chest. “I could see your heart. You’re beautiful you know.”
Gaz looked behind her, wondering if Logan was still there. “Are you okay, though? Like, did it hurt you?” She pulled Kitty closer, hoping that Kitty wasn’t going to break or dissolve, that she hadn’t seen too much.
“Scared us, pumpkin.” Logan said, stepping into view.
Kitty gave him a smile, but didn’t detach herself from Gaz. “No, it didn’t really hurt. It was... a little overwhelming. I could process so much, but now I can’t fully grasp most of it. There are some threads I tug on and they’re just not there anymore.”
“You still cosmic?”
“It’s not something that ever goes away in our experience,” Kitty said, voice quiet.
“What’s cosmic mean in terms of you,” Gaz murmured. She didn’t like that Logan knew more than she did.
“Cosmic… Like…” Kitty searched for the words, looking up at the ceiling. “There’s…”
"Power Cosmic," Logan suggested. He glanced at Gaz. "...uh that's what we call power that's galactic scale. Or bigger."
"Yeah, kind of like that. The Black Vortex is twelve billion years old. But the thing is, it may make you a cosmic being, but there's not telling what it will do to who you are. Uh. Kind of like the One Ring only less evil." Kitty rubbed the back of her head.
"And that thing gave you it's power?"
"I asked nicely?"
Logan rubbed his face. "And you didn't give the power back?"
"I phased an entire planet without even trying. Saved billions. Just call me Frodo."
Gaz blinked. “I am not fucking Samwise, god damnit. Can I be Smaug?” Because really, what else was there to argue about? Kitty was a cosmically powered space being. Thing. It wasn’t any weirder than Lockheed, really.
“You could be Gimli and I’ll be Legolas,” Kitty assured her.
Logan groaned. “I don’t want to know.”
“That works for me.” Gaz smiled up at Kitty, nuzzling into her chest. “I’ll be your pet dwarf. Though Logan’s hairier.”
“Can I get a hug before I go?” Logan looked between them, smiling.
“Of course.” Kitty disentangled herself from Gaz long enough to give her mentor a hug. “Thanks for coming. Sorry about the freak out.”
Logan shook his head. He’d felt a little in over his head with this one, but then Cosmic Shit was usually over his head.
Gaz even went over to tiptoe up and ruffle Logan’s hair. “Thanks,” she muttered. Gruff with almost everyone but Kitty, Logan wasn’t an exception.
“Call me if you need anything. Like a good drink. Dental dams.”
Kitty smacked his shoulder.
“I can’t get sick, so there’s no point,” Gaz shrugged. She didn’t get the joke, as so often happened.
“That’s not what I...nevermind.” Logan laughed. “Thanks for the beer, darlin’.” He pointed at Kitty. “Don’t do that again.”
She rolled her eyes, leaning her hip into Gaz. “I’ll try to avoid dreaming, thanks.” She watched Logan go, then turned back to Gaz. “Hey...are you sure you’re okay?”
Gaz looked at her feet. “I was scared of losing you. A lot.” She chewed a little on her lower lip. “Stay here?”
Touching Gaz’s chin, Kitty tried to make her look at her. “It’s okay. I didn’t expect that to happen, but I’m here now. It’ll take more than this to get rid of me.”
“Stay here. With me. You can have your own room if you want.” Gaz swallowed hard, not wanting to make eye contact. She was weirdly shy when it came to that sort of thing.
“You want me to… move in with you?” Kitty chewed on her lip, not pulling away, and not saying no. But she really wanted to hear Gaz actually say it. In so many words. She lifted her hand, moving it through Gaz’s hair. “Is that… what you want?”
“Well, yeah. I love you, you idiot, I don’t want to lose you. I can help if you go all blue again,” Gaz smiled. It was small, barely perceptible, but that was huge for her.
Kitty leaned her cheek against Gaz’s. “Funny you should say that. I love you too, you know.” But maybe she didn’t know, it was something that Kitty had thought about, and maybe occasionally gasped out in the throws of passion, but actually saying it in a serious manner was serious business and in Kitty’s experience had always gotten her in trouble. But going cosmic put things into perspective. “I love you.”
“I love you too. ... is that a yes?” Gaz snuggled a little closer to Kitty, hoping it was a yes. She didn’t know if she’d be able to handle a no.
Laughing, Kitty nodded. “Yeah, honey. That’s a yes.”
